Newtown students help tornado victims

Some local Newtown high school students are reaching out to others in need through Ben's lighthouse.

Rick Haylon says Ben's Lighthouse was created to help the children of Newtown after the tragedy at Sandy Hook. The group is giving back by helping the tornado victims in Oklahoma.

"We feel that the families of the children in Oklahoma went through? tragedy very similar and different and similar in many ways to what we've gone through,? Havlon said.

?We think there's a share learning experience for our kids and they can talk to their kids and learn from each other. And help each other. At the same time we can go and do some really good work."

High school students are eager a week of their summer vacation helping out in Oklahoma.

?I know how much people came out here and help us, so I think it's important to give back to others," said Elizabeth Calabrese. "And I'm just excited to be able to help people and show people what Newtown is really about.

"I feel like it's a great opportunity to give back to someone who's gone through something similar to us," said Breanna Kelly. "And show that we appreciate all the help we received by helping others."

"I feel like it's a great opportunity I feel like we can go out and help the community that went through something like similar like three devastating that we went through," said Trystan?Wagner.

19 children will make the trip along with chaperones. in just three weeks the non profit group raised money through private donations, friends and online fund raising.?

The group says? they'll spend a week of eight-hour days in the hot sun, cleaning up, building fences, cutting down trees and whatever is? needed to help the Oklahoma community.?

"This will be cool for me because I will be working with other people that have some experience what we've been through here and we can work together and figure things out from each other which I think is important," said Jeff Haylon.

"It was amazing how many people reached out to us when we were in a time of need," said Breanna Kelly. "And Oklahoma is feeling that same need now. I really hope we can help as much as we can."?
