U.S. lawmakers take Washington tax reform show on the road

By Kim Dixon

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Abandoning the corridors of power for a shop full of gleaming, supersized steel refrigerators and steam ovens, two U.S. lawmakers took their quixotic bid to overhaul the 70,000-page tax code on the road this week to rally public support outside Washington.

Democratic Senator Max Baucus and Republican Representative Dave Camp, who chair the congressional tax-writing committees, sought ideas on Monday from the owner of Mrs. G's, a 40- employee New Jersey appliance business.

There in Lawrenceville, and later at the Hub, a Philadelphia-based technology meeting space with about 50 workers, they spoke of arcane tax subjects from depreciation rules to accounting methods and how to make the tax code better.

"What are the most maddening, complex provisions that make you want to pull your hair out?" Baucus asked Debbie Schaeffer, 54, the president of Mrs. G's who led the two through a tour of appliances in the business she took over from her grandmother.

"We don't have enough time," Schaeffer's certified public account, Marguerite Mount, chimed in. She then noted the problems of defining small business reflected in section 263(a) of the tax code. "Defining small business and clarity on that would be huge."

The lawmakers' effort will shift into high gear after the congressional August break, when both Camp and Baucus are set to release long-awaited proposals to revamp everything from charitable contributions to business write-offs.

Camp and Baucus began a nationwide tour earlier this month to drum up support for the effort, which faces skepticism from party leaders and a fight from lobbyists aiming to protect the most lucrative and popular tax breaks.

REBUFFED

Some fellow senators last week were critical of an effort by Baucus and Republican Senator Orrin Hatch to solicit specific ideas for rewriting a tax code that was last revamped 27 years ago.

"It's messy," Baucus said, acknowledging that it would not be easy to forge an agreement.

Both businesses the duo visited file tax reforms as pass-through entities - meaning the profits flow directly to the owners who are then taxed. Such business pay the same rate as the highest income taxpayers of 39.6 percent.

Neither of the owners complained about the rate, though they did grumble about benefits traditional corporations get, such as the ability to carry forward losses to reduce tax bills.

The interactions highlighted the challenges facing the effort, including getting taxpayers to identify tax provisions they now enjoy that they would be willing to give up for lower tax rates - the goal of the effort.

By way of example, Schaeffer could not name what deductions she would be willing to give up for a lower rate.

At the Hub, a business that rents out space to other businesses for holding corporate meetings, co-founder John New said he appreciated many aspects of the tax code, but the mind- numbing complexity eats away at time that could be better spent building his business, he said.

"Some of the things are built on a rational set of principles," New said. "But when it goes past page 2 or 3 (of instructions) it really goes into la-la land."

The tax code was last thoroughly revamped in 1986, when Republican President Ronald Reagan struck a deal to pass legislation backed by a Democratic House of Representatives and a Republican Senate.

In the years since, tax issues have dominated public and congressional debate and factored prominently in U.S. election campaigns, even as tax breaks expanded. Breaks range from mortgage interest deductions for homeowners to exceptions and special provisions for business.

State Dept.: Keystone XL jobs impact 'negligible'

The State Department said Monday that President Obama?s jobs claims about the Keystone XL pipeline were consistent with the agency?s ongoing review of the project.

The comment, made to The Hill in an email, countered fresh attacks from Keystone supporters that Obama low-balled jobs estimates from State.

"The president was clearly stating that the proposed project would have a negligible impact on the overall U.S. job market, which was the finding of the State Department in the initial, Draft SEIS [supplemental environmental impact statement],? a State Department official said.

The official said State was busy reviewing TransCanada Corp.?s application for a cross-border permit to complete Keystone?s northern portion in a ?transparent and rigorous manner.?

Obama took heat Monday from Republicans, industry and unions for suggesting the Canada-to-Texas pipeline would generate 2,000 construction jobs and between 50 and 100 permanent positions.

They pointed to State?s draft review, which said Keystone would generate 42,100 direct and indirect jobs during a two-year building phase. Of that total, 3,900 jobs would go to construction workers.

The draft State review also found Keystone would lead to 35 permanent posts.

Premier League?s early ?must sees? from NBC Sports? U.S. TV schedule

The initial Premier League schedule was announced on July 11, but without solid dates and kickoff times, it was difficult to get too excited. You knew which teams had tough starts (Manchester United), which teams had it easier (West Ham), but in a double round robin league format, those quirks only matter so much. You didn?t know which early kickoffs would force you to set your alarm. You didn?t know which late starts would allow you get to the local bar. And you didn?t know which Monday games would leave you closing your web browser lest something spoil the match before you got to your DVR.

Now there are no such ambiguities, which means you not only know when you?ll need your iPhone to wake you up but also which games will be on ?big NBC? (10 in the first three months) and live on NBC Sports Network (57).

All of which plays into this: Our dozen ?Must See? games of the season?s first three months. Of course, depending on where your allegiances lie, you could see this list as flawed, biased, what have you. Regardless, these match highlights are sure to be near the top of each?Premier League Live?post-game show:

Saturday, August 17: Swansea City vs. Manchester United (NBC) -?The Premier League on NBC debuts with Manchester United?s first Alex Ferguson-less match in 26 years. It will also see a Swansea team that?s added Wilfried Bony and Jonjo Shelvey try to replicate Everton?s success last season, with the Toffees handing United an opening weekend loss.

Monday, August 26: Manchester United vs. Chelsea (NBCSN) -?Jos? Mourinho returns to the place where he first made his mark in England, his slide down Old Trafford?s sidelines helping to bring his eventual Champions League-winning Porto team to the Premier League?s attention. In his second match back with Chelsea, Mourinho gets an early chance to flash the Blues? title credentials.

source: Getty ImagesSunday, September 1: Liverpool vs. Manchester United (NBCSN) -?See what I mean about United?s tough start? At Swansea, then home to Chelsea, then to Anfield for the season?s first North West Derby? David Moyes (right) has been on this side of a rivalry with Liverpool before, having just finished a long tenure at Everton, but given the Reds host Stoke and visit Aston Villa in the season?s first two rounds, the new United boss may meet a ?particularly hyped Reds team on his return to Liverpool.

Sunday, September 1: Arsenal vs. Tottenham (NBCSN) -?Another of the league?s most famous derbies completes this Sunday doubleheader, with the league?s North London rivals positioning themselves for another fight for fourth (and the league?s last Champions League spot). Arsenal could still buy this summer to try to distance themselves from Spurs, but in the second season of Andr? Villas-Boas?s tenure at White Hart Lane, Spurs may be ready, should Arsenal up the ante.

Sunday, September 22: Manchester City vs. Manchester United (NBCSN) -?They finished one-two in each of the league two seasons, and with Manchester City adding Manuel Pellegrini as well as Jesus Navas, Fernandinho, Stevan Joevtic and ?lvaro Negredo, the Sky Blues may have closed last year?s gap. Regardless, this is becoming the preeminent intracity derby in world soccer, with a Sunday affair at City of Manchester stadium sure to give both new coaches a taste of what?s currently?be the league?s most-heated rivalry.

Saturday, September 28: Tottenham vs. Chelsea (NBCSN) -?In the last three meetings between these London rivals, the teams have combined for 16 goals. The last two at White Hart Lane have each ended with six goals scored, nine of them by Chelsea, a symptom of the Blues? dominance over Spurs. We?re now going on three years and seven meetings since Tottenham last upended their rivals, though in that time, only one game?s featured a clean sheet. With Gareth Bale juxtaposed against one of the most talented attacks in the league, we?re unlikely to see that March 2012, 0-0 replicated this September. Tottenham breakthrough or no, expect goals.

Sunday, October 27: Chelsea vs. Manchester City (NBCSN) -?These are the two teams aspiring to dethrone Manchester United, but how they perform against each other may prove as crucial to their title hopes as their fortunes against the Red Devils. Of late, however, Chelsea have failed miserably against the Citizens, taking only one point from City over the last two seasons, failure compounded by a loss in last year?s FA Cup semifinals.

source: Sunday, October 27: Sunderland vs. Newcastle (NBCSN) -?The season?s first North East derby also serves as Jozy Alitdore?s (right) highest-profile match of fall. By late October, we?ll have a good idea of how the U.S. international?s settled under Paolo Di Danio, and if that transition proves successful, he?ll lead the Black Cats? attack when Fabricio Coloccini and the Magpies visit their fiercest rivals.

Sunday, November 3: Cardiff City vs. Swansea City (NBCSN) ?- For the first time, two Welsh teams will compete in the Premier League, with Cardiff City?s promotion bringing the South Wales derby to the top flight of English soccer. After a series of close calls in the second division, the newly red-laden Bluebirds finally earned promotion, though with their rivals expected to compete at the edges of the league?s Europa League spots, a Cardiff side that will define success by avoiding relegation is a completely fighting different battle than their rivals.

Sunday, November 10: Manchester United vs. Arsenal (NBCSN) -?There?s still something special about this rivalry, one that served as the league?s marquee battle from the late nineties into the early oughts. Every year since the league began play in 1992-93, one of Arsenal or Manchester United have finished in the top two. Today, Arsenal has fallen a step behind, going eight years without a trophy, but for a generation that was brought up on Premier League soccer, United versus Arsenal will always be a must see matchup.

Saturday, November 23: Everton vs. Liverpool (NBCSN) -?We have to wait over three months for Liverpool?s rivals to meet, but when they rekindle their derby at Goodison Park, the managers may garner much of the focus. New Everton boss Roberto Martinez will be facing Liverpool for the first time as Toffees? manager, and although he faced the Reds many occasions while managing now-relegated Wigan Athletic, center stage in this rivalry will be completely different. That the coach on the opposing bench is Brendan Rodgers, a man who also used Swansea City as a springboard, adds another thin layer of intrigue to this Merseyside Derby.

Monday, November 25: West Brom vs. Aston Villa (NBCSN) - No survey of Premier League rivalries would be complete without nothing what?s happening in Birmingham, where West Bromwich Albion is redefining the West Midland?s pecking order. When they were promoted two seasons ago, it had been 32 years since the Baggies had finished about their rivals in the league table. Now they?ve done it two years in a row. After battling relegation, Aston Villa have bigger things to worry about West Brom?s success, but that success does highlight how much things have changed in Birmingham.

The Newsroom spoiler: ?Unintended Consequences? might reveal what really happened in Africa

When The Newsroom premiered its second season a few weeks back, Maggie (Alison Pill) had a shocking new haircut, and Will (Jeff Daniels) tried to explain it vaguely by referring to her field time in Uganda.

macandme

The next episode, ?Unintended Consequences?, might just takes us back to that mysterious time and shed some light on what happened that would prompt Maggie for a drastic physical makeover.

The promo video starts with Rebecca Halliday (Marcia Gay Harden) introducing herself and starting her session with the question: ?Tell me about Africa?. The next few shots tease that Maggie witnessed something far more dangerous than what she intended to cover.

Meanwhile, Jim (John Gallagher) continues to rant about the complacency of the Mitt Romney journalists, with Hallie (Grace Gummer) listening ? probably figuring out if she made a mistake siding with him and getting thrown off the press bus.

Neal (Dev Patel) is denied access to a possible source/witness ? and while it?s not clear, it may have something to do with Occupy Wall Street, or Operation Genoa.

Check out the video below:

Here?s a brief synopsis released by the network:

Maggie tries to convince Rebecca that she is fine; a protestor refuses to cooperate with Neal and Jerry after an interview with Will goes poorly; Jim gets heat from Mac.

Israeli and Palestinian Teams Prepare to Relaunch Previously-Failed Peace Talks ? But Will It Work This Time?

JERUSALEM (TheBlaze/AP) -- Israeli and Palestinian teams flew to Washington on Monday to end five years of diplomatic stalemate and prepare for a new round of Mideast peace talks, though optimism was in short supply after two decades of failed attempts to reach a deal.

The resumption of talks was made possible by a decision by Israel's Cabinet on Sunday to free 104 long-held Palestinian prisoners in four stages, linked to progress in talks (read more about this development). The release was part of an agreement brokered early this month by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to bring the sides back to the negotiating table.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been reluctant to negotiate with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, fearing the hard-line Israeli leader will reject what the Palestinians consider minimal territorial demands.

Israeli and Palestinian Teams Fly to the U.S. to Relaunch Previously Failed Peace Talks

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas chairs a session of the Palestinian cabinet in the West Bank city of Ramallah, July 28, 2013. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry shuttled between Israeli and Palestinian leaders for months seeking a breakthrough and announced last week that the Palestinians and the Israelis were willing to meet to discuss renewing talks. The Palestinians long refused to return to the negotiating table unless Israel agreed to several preconditions. Credit: AP

The Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in 1967, but have accepted the principle of limited land swaps to allow Israel to annex some of the dozens of settlements it has built on war-won lands.

Abbas had repeatedly said he will only go to talks if Israel either freezes settlement building or recognizes the 1967 lines as a starting point for drawing the border of a state of Palestine.

Palestinian officials reiterated Monday that they received U.S. assurances that Washington considers the 1967 lines the basis for border talks.

However, a senior Abbas aide acknowledged that Israel has not signed on to that principle. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue with reporters.

Senior Israeli officials have also reiterated in recent days that settlement construction would continue.

The Palestinian official said the expected prisoner release went a long way toward persuading Abbas to give negotiations another chance, even without Israel meeting his long-standing demands on the terms of such talks.

The two teams are to meet for the first time later Monday in Washington for discussions that will not deal with the fundamental issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but rather aim to lay the foundations for full-fledged peace talks later this year.

The U.S. State Department said they would try to establish a work plan for the broader negotiations, which are to last six to nine months.

Israel is represented by chief negotiator Tzipi Livni and Yitzhak Molcho, a veteran Netanyahu adviser. The Palestinian team consists of chief negotiator Saeb Erekat and Abbas aide Mohammed Shtayyeh.

The actual negotiations are to be held in the region.

Livni said before her departure for Washington that she is going to the talks "cautiously, but also with hope."

Hanan Ashrawi, a Palestinian spokeswoman, said the talks are being held under more difficult conditions than previous negotiations.

She cited the Palestinian political split, with Western-backed moderate Abbas and the Islamic militant Hamas running rival governments in the West Bank and Gaza, as well as the more hawkish positions of Netanyahu, compared to his predecessor.

"But I think there is a recognition of the urgency," she said. "If we don't move fast and decisively, things could fall apart."

Hamas, which seized Gaza from Abbas in 2007, has dismissed the new talks, and the militant movement's spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri on Monday rejected the notion that Abbas is representing the Palestinians at the talks.

Resuming negotiations "is a dangerous step and the only beneficiary is the occupation (Israel), which uses it as a cover for its continued crimes," Abu Zuhri said.

Hamas wants to establish an Islamic state in all of historic Palestine, including what is now Israel. Hamas has raised the possibility of long-term cease-fires under some circumstances, but has made clear it would not consider a partition deal to be the end of the Israeli-Arab conflict.

The expected resumption of talks comes after six months of shuttle diplomacy by Kerry, and Israel's agreement to release veteran prisoners was key to the secretary's success.

The Cabinet decision was welcomed by Palestinians and some drew angry reactions in Israel.

The fate of Palestinian prisoners is an emotional issue on both sides; Palestinians tend to view the prisoners as heroes who sacrificed for the struggle for statehood, while many Israelis seem them as cold-blooded killers.

The list of prisoners eligible for release includes those who killed or wounded Israelis or killed Palestinian informers.

"The murderers will be released," read the front-page headline in Israel's Yediot Ahronot daily Monday.

Netanyahu faced opposition in his Cabinet, though he pushed through Sunday's approval with a comfortable 13-7 vote, with two abstentions.

On the streets of Israel and the West Bank, hope mixed with skepticism.

"I believe it's time to give it (negotiations) a chance and to try again," said Tel Aviv resident Eliot Diamant. Another city resident, Eliezer Zaiger, said he believes negotiations won't benefit Israel.

That view was shared by Issam Baker in the West Bank city of Ramallah. He said little will change on the ground for Palestinians and that previous rounds of talks have not produced results.

Nokia unhappy at Microsoft's slow Windows Phone progress

Nokia has voiced its frustration at Microsoft's sluggish rate of progress with its Windows Phone platform.

Bryan Biniak, Nokia's VP of app development, has given an interview to the International Business Times in which he addresses some of the issues affecting Microsoft's mobile OS.

Referring to the relative lack of take-up for Windows Phone 8 devices - and in particular the Nokia flagship devices that run it - Biniak said, "To give you a reason to switch, I need to make sure the apps that you care about on your device are not only on our phones, but are better. I also need to provide you unique experiences that you can't get on your other devices."

He went on to draw attention to Nokia's prodigious hardware output, with the company having launched 10 Lumia handsets (most recently the Nokia Lumia 1020) in just 12 months, and the lack of equivalent progress on the Windows Phone app front.

"We are releasing new devices frequently and for every new device," said Biniak, "if there is an app that somebody cares about that's not there that's a missed opportunity of a sale."

He later added that "It's not just about the hardware, it's about the tools that are on the hardware. You can't sell a phone without the apps, you just can't."

Windows Phone's 165,000 apps doesn't appear to stack up to the 900,000 on iOS and the 1 million on Android, although it did launch somethan two years later. Biniak doesn't see that there are any "major gaps" in Windows Phone's app offering, but admits that there are a couple of "select applications" missing.

He believes that by the end of 2013, however, "people will be hard-pressed to say '[Windows Phone] doesn't have this app' and it makes a material difference."

Part of Windows Phone's problem, hints Biniak, is that Microsoft retains a relatively glacial approach to software upgrades and improvements - a hangover from its Windows desktop OS roots. Mobile operating systems, of course, are far more iterative and fast-evolving.

To that end, Biniak claims that Nokia is trying to "evolve the cultural thinking" at Microsoft, adding that "Waiting until the end of your fiscal year when you need to close your targets, doesn't do us any good when I have phones to sell today."

Next, read our Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Lumia 925 vs Lumia 920 comparison.

The fact that the Chinese were invited to assist the U.K. with their censorship attempts, starts rumors that it's not just about "porn", but it's just the beginning of what will be Chinese-style censorship of the internet and an end to open information flow regarding news, events and common speech on blogs regarding politics.

I urge Americans to FIGHT ANY attempt to install an internet censorship program in America. I see the internet as a matter of free speech. ANY attempt to censor it is an attack on our 1st Amendment Rights!

The idea CHF is to put the physical capability to block anything in place. Once the gate is built, the govt can then start making rules regarding every site. I believe that the govt has no business interjecting themselves in ANY part of the internet with the exception of their own sites and gateways, AND EVEN THEN, I believe the govt should be allowing access to 99% of their documents. There is very little reason to "classify" information from the public, however, the govt now is classifying WAY too much these days.

The govt today is too secret, too controlling, too intrusive and, without a doubt, TOO BIG!

Apple vows to investigate labor violations alleged in China Labor Watch report

Apple on Monday issued a statement promising to look into claims that its supplier Pegatron has been requiring employees to work excessive hours without adequate compensation.

Worker prepares iPhone for final assembly. | Source: Apple Supplier Responsibility Report
In a response provided to The Wall Street Journal, Apple said it has been working closely for months with China Labor Watch, the group that issued the report on Pegatron. The group recently informed Apple that workers' ID cards were being withheld, which prompted the company to conduct an audit and confirm the issue, before putting a stop to Pegatron's practices.

The latest report from China Labor Watch alleges that Pegatron has been violating Chinese regulations related to workplace safety, withholding of worker pay, and sub-par living conditions. Apple has said the claims are new to the company, and they will be investigated "immediately."

"Our audit teams will return to Pegatron, RiTeng and AVY for special inspections this week," Apple's statement reads. "If our audits find that workers have been underpaid or denied compensation for any time they've worked, we will require that Pegatron reimburse them in full."

Apple noted that it has conducted 15 "comprehensive audits" of Pegatron facilities since 2007. Those have covered more than 130,000 workers.

The most recent survey conducted by Apple in June found that Pegatron employees work an average of 46 hours per week. Pegatron is just one company in Apple's massive supply chain, which comprises more than a million total employees.

Criticism of Apple's supply chain is not new, but in the past most of the scrutiny has been aimed at the company's primary supply partner, Foxconn. But this year Apple began looking to diversify its supply chain, giving a greater presence to Pegatron.

Moto X reportedly comes with Magic Glass, laminated aluminum structure

DNP Moto X

There's been a deluge of Moto X reports, and it shows no signs of stopping. We've seen the device's press shots, camera UI and benchmark results, and most recently, we've even watched the T-Mobile version waltz past the FCC. Now, we're treated to purported press images and unannounced features from Taylor Wimberly, formerly of Android and Me. According to Wimberly, a sheet of specially treated Gorilla Glass covers the phone's entire face and wraps around its sides, forming a nearly seamless gap with the rear shell. Apparently, it's special enough that Motorola will call it "Magic Glass." As another nod to the phone's toughness, he also claims a laminated aluminum structure makes its frame even stronger, despite being thin and lightweight. Check out the images to decide the report's veracity for yourself, but don't sweat it too much -- we'll be able to confirm it in a few days when the phone launches on August 1st.

Beats President and COO Luke Wood on RIM's 850 pager and disconnecting-induced panic

Beats President and COO Luke Wood on RIM's 850 pager and disconnectinginduced panic

Every week, a new and interesting human being tackles our decidedly geeky take on the Proustian Q&A. This is the Engadget Questionnaire.

In a brand spanking new edition of our weekly line of questioning, Beats President and COO Luke Wood discusses the dynamic mobile space and discovering your real-life soundtrack. As you might expect, the full collection of answers awaits just beyond the break.

Beats President and COO Luke Wood on RIM's 850 pager and disconnectinginduced panicWhat gadget do you depend on most?
It's a tie between HP Spectre, MacBook Pro, BlackBerry 9900 (OG), HTC One with Beats Audio and iPhone 5. Since different devices work for different applications and circumstances, it's important to be fluent on many platforms to see where the opportunity is -- even if that means going through airport security looks a bit like a Monty Python skit.

Which do you look back upon most fondly?
The RIM Inter@ctive Pager (850) fundamentally shifted how I interacted with the world. The BES server was fast and stable and suddenly email went from a desktop-dedicated work tool to a means of intimate, real-time communication.

Which company does the most to push the industry?
In mobility, I don't think you can say there is just one. This is an extremely dynamic space and every day true innovation comes from both incumbent operating systems and OEMs, and the aspirant, disruptive challengers. From a global perspective, we should see this space evolve every 18 months for a long time to come.

What is your operating system of choice?
OS X, iOS and Android are tied for mobility. I have just started really spending time with Windows 8, but so far it's fun and very clean.

What are your favorite gadget names?
There's something serenely domestic and reassuring about Nest. The name invites you into a digital and organic discourse that perfectly fits the product experience and immediately makes you feel like you've just dropped coal into a potbellied stove. We have a portable Bluetooth speaker called the Pill that I love as well -- it looks like a pill, is the perfect antidote to bad portable sound and was prescribed by the doctor... Dr. Dre.

What are your least favorite?
Pretty much anything that combines a character from the original Battlestar Galactica with a number usually in the thousands -- the Adama 7700, Omega 1011A, etc. Names that combine two random Latin roots to make it sound innovative also confuse me. Made-up words can be really interesting, but they need to have an emotional connection to the product.

"I'm as excited as any consumer of media about the evolution of graphics processors, display technology and ultra-high-resolution video formats but this has come at the cost of sound quality ... you are not getting the emotion of the content if you don't focus on both experiences."

Which app do you depend on most?
If an email client counts as an app, then definitely email -- somewhat regressive, but still unbelievably efficient to manage workflow and a global business. No. 2 for me is iTunes. I can't imagine life without music and iTunes is still my player of choice. For streaming music, Beats is currently developing a service that has the opportunity to significantly shift consumers' expectation of what a streaming music service does.

What traits do you most deplore in a smartphone?
An inelegant UI that leaves you stranded in screens with invented icons and no exit. It's like a movie mash-up of the final hedge maze scene in The Shining meets Groundhog Day.

Which do you most admire?
The basics are still speed, stability, quality of voice telephony and battery life. An operating system and device that [do] not allow me to find a contact and dial, text or email with maximum speed and efficiency fails before I've bothered to notice the quality of display or how many megapixels the camera has.

What is your idea of the perfect device?
Something that teaches me new behavior and solves problems I did not know I had. The iPad is a perfect example. Even though I already had an iPod and iPhone, within three weeks I was addicted and now use all three for different things. I also appreciate a device that is beautiful for its pure aesthetic principles and quality of design. A simple, elegant machine is a sexy thing.

What is your earliest gadget memory?
They have all been repressed! If I had to dig deep, it's probably the first Sony Walkman that was a gift from my parents in 1981. I was 12 years old and the device instantly became part of my DNA. It was on me everywhere, hanging from my body like a FedEx package tracker. It freed my music from the solitary confines of my bedroom and allowed my life to have a real-time soundtrack.

What technological advancement do you most admire?
Hands down the stereo. If I were to look at my life and think what technology has brought the most meaning, impact and joy to me, it would have to be stereophonic recordings. I'm obsessed with counterpoint and how the push / pull of a rhythmic section plays with left / right phrasing -- this would not be possible in a mono world. No. 2 is the wheel. No. 3, WiFi.

Which do you most despise?
The almost fetishistic obsession with product ID and display technology at the cost of sound reproduction. I'm as excited as any consumer of media about the evolution of graphics processors, display technology and ultra-high-resolution video formats, but this has come at the cost of sound quality. Media is most often a combination of sight and sound and you are not getting the emotion of the content if you don't focus on both experiences. Video and audio are a binary choice, but the investment always flows into video, often abandoning audio to become a sub-par experience. Now that we have this incredible video resolution and beautiful, paper-thin ID, let's deliver the rest of the experience.

"It's just easier and more reliable to text / email than it is to place a voice call, both from the way the UI is designed to the quality of the networks."

What fault are you most tolerant of in a gadget?
Battery life. I have been trained the hard way to obsessively charge everything all the time so that any given space looks like a recording studio patch bay. Maybe it's hangover from playing so many video games in the 1980's where the deteriorating life bar was just part of the game.

Which are you most intolerant of?
Software crashes -- completely inexcusable to me as a consumer. It feels like the ultimate betrayal.

When has your smartphone been of the most help?
I'm currently having a newfound romance with my smartphone. My kids are constantly on theirs and with my busy travel schedule, my smartphone gets me as close to "there" as possible, even when I'm on the other side of the world. I'm actually writing this from China while my kids are in Los Angeles, and in the process, I have Instagrammed with them, traded links on SoundCloud, seen every possible emoticon to describe the attributes of our dogs and been the recipient of multiple 10-second films shot with the 8mm app. In short, genuine, spontaneous human interaction even when geographically dislocated and 100 percent enabled by the technology in this device.

What device do you covet most?
Probably my vintage Korg SDD3000 digital delay. My background is the music industry and recording studios and I bought this device in hopes of sounding like The Edge from U2. I never came close, but the sound is completely unique and it's one of the few pieces of digital tech in my life that has not been replaced by software running off of a PC or smartphone. Plus, the look of it screams "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer, which is incredible for something so functional.

If you could change one thing about your phone what would it be?
I would like to see the perfect hybrid of telephony and the smartphone. I think if people actually spoke to each other more often rather than text, there would be a much clearer understanding of intent, alignment, motivation and desire. It's just easier and more reliable to text / email than it is to place a voice call, both from the way the UI is designed to [the] quality of the networks. This is heavy lifting, but a call should be effortless without sacrificing industrial design and all the wonderful things our device can do.

What does being connected mean to you?
I am always connected so it means every day, steady state. If I have IP, I am all in.

When are you least likely to reply to an email?
When I am sleeping, on an international flight or in Wellfleet, Mass. -- due to coverage -- not that I've ever noticed, or wondered why 45 percent of the world's population is now covered by a 3G mobile network, but not Wellfleet, Mass. I think there might be a Jonathan Richman song in this.

When did you last disconnect?
Oh my... 1997. Occasionally, I'm in extended IP exile (anything over 15 minutes) and I feel a slow, pulsing panic spread over me like a rash at summer camp.

App Store wants: More and better adult beverage apps!

App Store wants: More and better booze apps!

Over the weekend I was out at a local brewery that has an awesome selection of craft beers so, naturally, I decided to work on a roundup of the best iPhone apps for beer drinkers. I worried there wouldn't be enough to choose from, however, so I quickly broadened my plans to beer and wine. But when I started working on it, I quickly discovered that even including both wine and beer, the selection of adult beverage apps was dismal. A couple social apps, a couple journalling apps, a couple location apps, but not a great selection of great apps.

That's not to say there weren't a few very good ones, but certainly not enough to do a proper "best apps for" post. In all my time writing app roundups for iMore, I've never had this happen before.

For beer drinkers, the only decent app I could find was Untappd which allows you to discover beers by checking out local pubs and viewing what others have to say about their beers. Even for living in a small area outside of Chicago, I still found some people using the app and rating craft beers. Outside of Untappd, I wasn't able to find any apps for beer drinkers that were worth using.

When it comes to wine, things weren't much better. I spent quite a bit of time signing into different wine related apps but there was absolutely no community behind them, which left them with no appreciable value. The only relatively useful app I was able to find was Drync, which is available for free. It allows you to view different wine selections and browse. The killer feature is the ability to save wines you like by scanning labels. You can even buy wine through Drync with little effort and have it shipped straight to your home. If you purchase 6 bottles or more, the shipping is free.

Sure, you can use non-specific apps, like Evernote to capture labels of bottles you like, tip calculators to figure out how much to leave bartenders and waiters, and general social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to share your experiences, but that can be said of almost any app category.

I did find quite a few apps dedicated to mixed drinks, like bartenders guides and mixology guides. I might still do a generic adult beverages round-up. But for casual drinks like beer and wine...?

In the Chicago and surrounding areas there have been several breweries and wineries popping up that have wonderful menus. From recent travels, I've also found several other areas really pushing local craft beers and wines. Anyone who looks for these places, places that feature local products, is in for a challenge.

Either I'm completely missing something or this is one of those categories on the App Store that's still underserved. Perhaps the market isn't big enough. Perhaps that's why some old apps have been left to fall out of date, or maybe no one has made the right app yet? Perhaps there's an opportunity here?

Let me know if there's a great beer or wine app you've found, or if you've looked into making one, let me know what you think of the market?

Mexican man elected mayor after faking death arrested

MEXICO CITY ? Prosecutors say they have arrested a man who faked his death to beat a rape charge, then later got elected mayor of a village in southern Mexico.

The Oaxaca state prosecutors' office says Leninguer Carballido was arrested on charges of using fake documents and making false statements.

Carballido was found late Tuesday hiding in a heavily fortified room at his family's home on the outskirts of Oaxaca City.

Carballido won July 7 elections for mayor of the village of San Agustin Amatengo.

When authorities were looking for him in 2011 in connection with a 2004 rape case, his family submitted a death certificate saying he died of natural causes in 2010.

The public records clerk who drew up the fake certificate has also been arrested.

Riccardo Mori ? My moderate scepticism about the Post-PC era

There is a fairly good definition of ?Post-PC era? on Wikipedia. This passage, I think, is especially relevant: When introducing Apple?s iCloud service in 2011, Jobs explained that the new platform would replace the PC as the ?hub? for a user?s devices with the cloud ? all of a user?s devices, including a PC, would be able to automatically synchronize and access media and other files between platforms. Apple?s current CEO Tim Cook continued to elaborate on the concept that a PC would no longer have to be the center of one?s digital life, and explained that mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones would be ?more portable, more personal and dramatically easier to use than any PC has ever?been.

Note that, in this scenario, the personal computer is not left entirely out of the picture, it is simply demoted and gets to be ?just another device?, along with the tablet and the smartphone and any portable device whose screen size either makes it an oversized smartphone or a small tablet.

An increasing number of people, from what I?ve observed, like to imagine this Post-PC era as a stage in technological progress where the personal computer progressively becomes so irrelevant as not to be needed anymore. A scenario where we basically do everything on touch-based ultra-portable devices. Over the past months I have read quite the number of articles written by tech enthusiasts raving about being able to do actual work on their iPads and nothing else, their MacBooks just collecting dust on their?desks.

All the talk about ?going iPad-only? has been admittedly rather intoxicating for me, since many of these geeks are essentially writers. Having to deal primarily with text is an activity I always found quite flexible, and as a writer myself I thought Yeah, why not, let?s try this little experiment. So I tried to go iPad-only for as long as I could. It lasted three days and a?half.

Before you jump to conclusions, let me clear up something right now. I?m not saying that it?s impossible or unfeasible to do actual work by using just an iPad. Many people out there manage just fine. What I?m saying is that it?s unfeasible for me, for at least a couple of reasons.

1. A cramped workspace ? The iPad?s screen real estate is simply not enough for me. And it gets worse when I use the iPad?s virtual keyboard in landscape orientation. I write the occasional piece and I happily take notes using great apps like iA Writer, Daedalus or Phraseology; but after a 30-minute session in any writing app, I simply start getting claustrophobic. I grow impatient. And if I need to switch between a few other apps, all that shuffling of apps taking the foreground starts getting cumbersome quickly. When I?m at my main machine ? a 15-inch MacBook Pro connected to a 23-inch display, an external keyboard and mouse ? pressing Alt-Tab to switch between open applications is way faster, and even if the flow may be similar (I keep a lot of applications in full-screen mode), on the Mac I have more space and I work much more comfortably.

2. Spatial arrangement ? Apart from certain iOS text editors/word processors with an integrated Web browser, working on the iPad means uni-tasking. While this is a great concept in theory ? ?distraction-free writing environment? and all that ? in practice I feel a kind of constraint which I usually don?t feel when I?m working on the Mac. When I do translation work, in particular, I simply need to have the main screen split at least in two areas, one with the original document, the other with my translation. These two areas may be just two windows inside the same application or, more often, two separate documents open in different applications. Arranging such workspace on a Mac is trivial. On an iPad, not so much. And even if other tablets allow for such screen-splitting, and even if such a feature becomes common in future releases of iOS and other mobile OSes, I think the workspace will always be a bit more awkward, due to the smaller screen real estate of a tablet. In other words, I still very much need an interface with multiple overlapping windows, because while it?s not ?multitasking? in a machine sense, it?s just that kind of ?human multitasking? where you need to keep an eye on multiple elements appearing simultaneously on a (big) screen.

Don?t get me wrong, the iPad is an amazing device, and it?s been a great improvement for my ?digital life? ever since I bought one. For light work sessions, especially out of the office, is more than enough and I don?t need to always bring a laptop with me. It?s also fantastic for ?spur-of-the-moment? activities, like editing an image, checking RSS feeds and news, and so on. For me, it fits perfectly in conjunction with a personal computer. In my setup, it often participates in the spatial arrangement I was mentioning above, because I can ?outsource? to the iPad a few background tasks so as to limit the app switching on the Mac. When I need to monitor my email or some feeds, I just keep the iPad with Mail open by my side. Same when I want to quickly check a video on the Web. Often the iPad works as a digital dictionary when I?m translating and don?t want to switch too often between my translation workspace on the Mac and an online dictionary site like Wordreference.com.

And not to re-ignite the trite ?consumption vs. creation? debate, but I?d say that my consumption vs. creation usage ratio on the iPad is currently 70:30. Again, I?m not saying the iPad can?t be used for serious work (creative or otherwise); I?m saying that I?m not seeing myself switching to a tablet as my only computing device anytime soon. To do that, such tablet should ? ironically, if you want ? behave more like a traditional computer, at least in giving me more freedom to arrange my workspace. And a bigger screen wouldn?t hurt, either.

I may sometimes have a conservative viewpoint about technology, and an old-school approach, but I actually like to keep an open mind and try alternative methods to get things done. I prefer flexibility over too ingrained habits and I don?t rely much on fixed workflows. So, it?s not that I can?t use my iPad as my only work tool just because I haven?t tried too hard. I have tried, and realised that I simply cannot work as long and as comfortably on it as I do on a Mac laptop. (And for translation work, at least for how I work, using only an iPad is just too awkward and slows me down considerably.)

Worth mentioning, at this point, is a recent article by Benedict Evans, titled The irrelevance of Microsoft. In the closing paragraph, he writes:

Though it looks like we?ve passed the tipping point, this process isn?t going to be over quickly. PC sales aren?t going to zero this year. But the replacement cycle, already at 5 years, will lengthen further and further, more and more apps will move to mobile or the cloud, and for many people the PC will end up like the printer or fax ? vestigial reminders of an older way of doing things.

While I don?t disagree with this assessment, I?m also thinking that the personal computer is still far from exiting the picture or becoming completely irrelevant. Sure, people are buying less PCs and more mobile devices, but what this fact tells me is that today people have a more fine-grained range of products to choose from than, say, 10?15 years ago. For those who purchased a computer a few years back only to use it as a consumption device (music, videos, photos, browsing the Web, doing some email, casual gaming, etc.), now products like the iPad, the Surface, the Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire HD, can be enough for that. These people can go from owning a laptop to just a tablet and never turn?back.

A tablet might also be enough (most of the time, at least) for other people whose kind of work involves specific activities and not much app-hopping or switching.

But an interesting portion of other people, I believe, won?t leave the personal computer behind so soon. It?s not only a matter of applications (e.g. ?I need to work with this specific software, and there?s no mobile equivalent for it?), but also and more importantly a matter of spatial arrangement and workspace organisation. Multi-touch interfaces and uni-tasking have certainly simplified things for many users, and have made computing way more accessible to less tech-savvy people. But mobile devices and operating systems still have some way to go to achieve the same kind of comfort and versatility of a personal computer?s interface. Advocates of the Post-PC era ? or, more properly, the Sans-PC era ? claim that PCs will ultimately become a niche market and will be used only by people who need to perform specialised tasks and use sophisticated, resource-intensive applications. I don?t know about that, really. Even for simpler tasks like writing, translating, and photo editing a personal computer is a more comfortable environment, if only for the bigger screen real estate and for the ability to keep an eye on different windows and workspaces without constantly switching from an app or task to another.
