Over-reactive parenting linked to negative emotions and problem behavior in toddlers
ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2012) ? Researchers have found that parents who anger easily and over-react are more likely to have toddlers who act out and become upset easily.
The research is an important step in understanding the complex link between genetics and home environment. In the study, researchers from Oregon State University, Oregon Social Learning Center, and other institutions collected data in 10 states from 361 families linked through adoption -- and obtained genetic data from birth parents as well as the children.
They followed the children at nine, 18 and 27 months of age, and found that adoptive parents who had a tendency to over-react, for example, were quick to anger when children tested age-appropriate limits or made mistakes. These over-reactive parents had a significant effect on their children, who exhibited "negative emotionality," or acting out and having more temper tantrums than normal for their age.
Genetics also played a role, particularly in the case of children who were at genetic risk of negative emotionality from their birth mothers, but were raised in a low-stress or less-reactive environment.
The study was published in the latest edition of the journal Development and Psychopathology.
"This is an age where children are prone to test limits and boundaries," said lead author Shannon Lipscomb, an assistant professor of human development and family sciences at OSU-Cascades. "However, research consistently shows that children with elevated levels of negative emotionality during these early years have more difficulties with emotion regulation and tend to exhibit more problem behavior when they are of school age."
Researchers also found that children who exhibited the most increases in negative emotionality as they developed from infants to toddlers (from nine to 27 months of age) also had the highest levels of problem behaviors at age two, suggesting that negative emotions can have their own development process that has implications for children's later behaviors.
"This really sets our study apart," Lipscomb said. "Researchers have looked at this aspect of emotionality as something fairly stable, but we have been able to show that although most kids test limits and increase in negative emotionality as they approach toddler age, the amount they increase can affect how many problem behaviors they exhibit as 2-year-olds."
Lipscomb said the take-away message for parents of young children and infants is that the way they adapt to toddlerhood -- a challenging time marked by a child's increasing mobility and independence -- can have an impact on how their child will develop.
"Parents' ability to regulate themselves and to remain firm, confident and not over-react is a key way they can help their children to modify their behavior," she said. "You set the example as a parent in your own emotions and reactions."
Researchers from the Oregon Social Learning Center, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania State University, University of New Orleans, University of Minnesota, University of California, Davis and Yale Child Study Center contributed to this study, which was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

What does Demi Lovato have up her sleeve?
We'll know in good time. But for now, the singer/actress tweeted out a photo teasing a super-secret special project she is working on with MTV. The photo features her wrists, emblazoned with her tattoos that read "Stay Strong." The picture offers up a couple of hints: the date "3.6.2012" and the hashtag #staystrong.
"Lovatics-I wanted to tell you FIRST about a special I worked on with @MTV," she tweeted. "It premieres March 6th at 10pm!! #staystrong."
Lovato first showed off the ink back in March 2011, just two months after she left an Illinois treatment center to deal with personal issues including an eating disorder and cutting.
"The journey that I went through and the support of my fans was so meaningful to me that I wanted to thank my fans in a way that I know can never be forgotten," the singer said in 2011.
"It's something that my fans were actually drawing on their wrists while I was still in treatment," she explained about the significance of her tattoos. "Some people even got tattoos of it, so I wanted to show you guys that I will never forget the support that you guys gave me."
Since returning to the spotlight, she has focused on her music career, including her 2011 album, Unbroken, which launched her empowering hit single "Skyscraper." Her next single is "Give Your Heart a Break."
Lovato has become a voice for young people struggling with personal issues. In December, she visited and spoke to patients at the Timberline Knolls Center, where she had received treatment.
"To be able to share my story and let them know that it gets easier ... Life is beautiful ... you are worthy of it," Lovato said. "Please say a prayer for all of those struggling with eating disorders, self-harm, mood disorders and substance abuse."

MESA, Ariz. (AP) ? Rick Santorum is looking for another upset or two, while Mitt Romney is hoping to keep his leading rival at bay in the run-up to the 20th debate of the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
"I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I could do well," the former Pennsylvania senator told supporters Tuesday after arriving ahead of any of his rivals for pre-debate campaigning in Arizona, a state long assumed safe for Romney.
Arizona and Michigan hold primaries on Feb. 28, but until recently, at least, the similarities seemed to end there.
Polls have long shown Romney with a solid lead in Arizona, where the 29 delegates at stake are reserved for the top vote-getter. As a result, neither he, Santorum, Newt Gingrich nor Ron Paul has devoted much time to the state.
A surging Santorum is running even with Mitt Romney atop the Republican presidential field, but neither candidate is faring well against President Barack Obama eight months before Americans vote, a new survey shows.
Meantime, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows that Obama tops 50 percent support when matched against each of the four GOP candidates and holds a significant lead over each of them.
In Arizona, television ads have been scarce. None of the candidates has run commercials, and Restore Our Future, an outside group that has played a major role in Romney's success so far in the campaign, is the only organization to pay for ads.
In Michigan, by contrast, Romney's lead in public and private surveys began eroding earlier this month after Santorum won upset victories in caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado and a non-binding primary in Missouri on a single night. Now Romney, the one-time, front-runner, campaigns as though he is behind.
Not surprisingly, Romney, Santorum and their allies have poured money into television ads in Michigan ? about $5 million combined, with additions made Tuesday for the race's final week.
Romney intends to go to Daytona Beach, Fla. on Sunday for the Daytona 500 race. But he cancelled a fundraiser without explanation at a time his campaign appears to be spending more than it is taking in. The millionaire businessman has not yet written a personal check to his campaign, according to spokeswoman Gail Gitcho.
While Wednesday's debate is in Arizona, the stakes are heightened because some previous encounters have had an impact far beyond the state where they were held.
Most notably, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry never recovered from his failure to recall the third of three federal agencies he wanted to abolish. His lapse came in a debate in Michigan last November.
And Romney righted his campaign a month ago when he excelled in a pair of Florida debates after losing the South Carolina primary to Gingrich.
Romney campaigned in Michigan on Tuesday and was pulled into a discussion of social issues by questioners at a town-hall style rally in Shelby Township.
Asked how he would defend religious liberty, he said Obama's administration has "fought against religion" and sought to substitute a secular agenda for one grounded in faith.
"Unfortunately, possibly because of the people the president hangs around with, and their agenda, their secular agenda ? they have fought against religion," he said.
Obama's campaign seized on the characterization, calling Romney's comments disgraceful and likening them to comments by Santorum. The former Pennsylvania senator said recently the president holds a "phony theology," then insisted he wasn't attacking the president's faith, but his environmental views.
Republicans have accused Obama of violating religious liberties when the administration recently announced that except for churches, most employers would be required to make birth control available as an insurance benefit as part of the health care overhaul Congress passed in 2010. The White House backtracked, but not enough to satisfy conservatives.
Romney, who has had trouble winning the votes of tea party advocates, said they should be in his corner.
"I think the tea party would find it very interesting that Rick Santorum voted to raise the debt ceiling five times without getting compensating reductions in spending," Romney said, echoing the ads his campaign and his allies are airing in Michigan.
Two thousand miles away, Santorum was cheered by a survey that showed a tighter-than-expected race in Arizona. He was repeatedly applauded during an appearance at a Lincoln Day luncheon held by the Maricopa County Republican Party.
"You can speak loudly on Tuesday that you want someone who's going to stand up and fight the insiders, fight the establishment, someone who has a track record of doing it," he said.
His reception was even better several hours later at a campaign rally.
Santorum "is just rock solid. He's sincere, honest," said Mary Muir, who said the rally was the first political event she has attended in 50 years.
Rich Kulok, 73, of Mesa, who also attended, said he was solidly for Santorum.
"I believe in the things he's saying," said Kulok, who worked in management and construction before retiring. "I'm dead set against abortion." He said Santorum "seems more genuine than the other guys."
"I think Romney will tell you anything you want to hear, depending on what city you're in," he said.
Gingrich has scarcely been a factor in either Michigan or Arizona, except indirectly. His campaign announced plans Wednesday to buy 30-minute blocks of time in key cities with coming contests for an infomercial on reducing energy prices.
Gingrich's decision not to campaign in Michigan so far has allowed Santorum to compete against Romney without also having to fend off a rival for the votes of conservatives.
Paul, though, has weighed in against Santorum.
He began running a new ad Tuesday challenging Santorum's claim that of being a conservative on spending issues. It also notes the former senator voted to raise the debt limit five times, and says Santorum supported legislation that created a prescription drug benefit under Medicare.
