SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? An attorney for Trayvon Martin's family says the parents of the Miami teen don't want race to be injected into the trial of the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with fatally shooting their son.
Attorney Daryl Parks said Thursday it's wrong for anybody to insert race into the trial.
He spoke after Thursday's court session ended on a day in which race surfaced in the testimony of a 19-year-old woman who was talking to Martin on the phone moments before the teen encountered neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.
Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder. He is pleading not guilty, claiming self-defense.
Race has permeated nationwide discussions of the case since the February 2012 shooting, which prompted nationwide protests and claims from critics that police took too long to arrest Zimmerman.
