Computer and Typing Skills Crucial for the ... - MoSo Technology

New York City, NY (PRWEB) July 01, 2013

eReflect software company, producer of Ultimate Typing software, announced today the significance of computer and typing skills for young people wishing to enter the labor market. As a companys representative emphasized, a poll conducted recently by the Prince?s Trust shows that in the UK alone 1 in 5 young people who are either in school or unemployed dont possess fundamental computer literacy. This lack of skills is a great impediment towards their ability to secure a job position, something those young people are well aware of.

Due to this alarming percentage of people illiterate in computer technology and basic skills such as keyboard typing, eReflect software company encourages young people to enroll in local computer training courses so as to increase their employment chances in the near future. In order to focus on typing skills, which are essential for virtually any job, eReflect also urges people to invest in a learning typing program to boost their confidence and touch typing skills in an easy and feasible manner.

According to the Princes Trust poll, it has been revealed that 25% of unemployed youth, as well as young people still in school, are either afraid or reluctant to fill out online forms or generally use computers, eReflect representatives noted today. They explained that this is an entirely reversible IT literacy issue which, with a few state-wide and local initiatives, can be remedied in a blink of an eye. The eReflect representatives emphasized how young people tend to learn faster than adults and that their initiation into the details of IT and computer technology would not be difficult at all.

Concluding today?s statement, eReflect and the development team behind Ultimate Typing software asked young students to search for IT training opportunities at their schools and local communities. eReflect also urged young people to not be intimidated by computers but rather see them as a tool for their own professional advancement. From online typing and computer skills resources, to affordable typing improvement software, todays choices are varied and can accommodate every need and budget, the statement summarized.

Appeals order on gay marriages may be reversed in California

Texas Guardian Sunday 30th June, 2013

California gay marriage opponents have acted to re-impose a ban on gay marriage.

Gay weddings, which resumed across California on the weekend, may once again have to be called off.

On Friday, in a historic ruling for gay marriage, a federal appeals court in San Francisco lifted a ban that had been in place since 2008.

On Saturday, opponents of same-sex marriage in California filed an emergency petition to the US Supreme Court to try to halt any further gay weddings in the state.

Opponents have said the appeals court should have, by law, allowed them more time to appeal before the lifting of the ban.

A group called Alliance Defending Freedom has said the Supreme Court should now overrule the order by the appeals court because, by law, it had 25 days to challenge the original Supreme Court ruling.

The gay marriage ban, known as Proposition 8, was approved by voters in 2008, months after California's Supreme court decided such unions were legal.

Last Wednesday the Supreme Court ruled that a private party, such as Alliance Defending Freedom, would have to demonstrate it would suffer injury if same-sex marriages were allowed.

The Ephemeralnet

vanishIn the aftermath of the dot-com crash, a new era for the web began to take hold - a turning point whose seismic shift was hyped under the moniker "Web 2.0." The concept referred to the web becoming a platform, a home for services whose popularity grew through network effects, user-generated content and collaboration. Blogging, social media sites, wikis, mashups, and more reflected a changing consciousness among the Internet's denizens - one which Tim O'Reilly, whose Web 2.0 conferences helped solidify the term as a part of our everyday lexicon, once described as a "collective intelligence, turning the web into a kind of global brain."

Jackie Pilossoph: Sharing the Silver Linings of Divorce

As a divorced person, I describe it this way: heartbreaking, scary, gut-wrenchingly sad, and really, really depressing at times. That said, I've come to learn that there IS a flipside. Divorce brings growth and acceptance and self-introspection and empowerment. And, divorce brings advantages. That's right, advantages. Would you believe there are ADVANTAGES of being divorced? Let me share the silver linings of divorce.

8 Silver Linings of Divorce:

1. You have an out whenever you want it. I believe that at this stage in my life, I shouldn't have to do anything I don't want to do. Let me clarify. We all have things everyday that we HAVE to do. Meetings we must attend, people we go to see out of the goodness of our hearts, chores, errands, work outs, and business events. Doing those things is just living up to your responsibilities. But, I believe that a person shouldn't do anything he or she does not WANT to do. In other words, don't do anything out of obligation or because you think you will upset someone if you're not there (unless you care deeply for the person). If there is an event that you really don't care to attend, don't. If a person who typically makes you feel bad about yourself wants to get together, don't. Enjoying life and your time is just too valuable. So, here's the divorce benefit: In order to spare someone's feelings, if you simply don't want to get together with someone, you can just say, "Sorry, it's my weekend with the kids!" How great is that?

2. Having to go back to work brings only good things. This applies mostly to women. When divorce happens, women are often forced to go back to work because of finances. I can tell you firsthand it was very scary. I hadn't worked in 10 years. Getting up to speed on computer technology was probably the most frightening thing for me. But, going back to work has HUGE benefits! Work is productive, and that brings self-esteem, self love and confidence! You will love yourself when you feel smart and productive and you see that "You still got it!" AND, you will meet so many men and women that could become friends, and maybe even romantic interests. Nothing bad ever comes from work. It's always good.

3. Loneliness subsides, empowerment takes its place: When I was getting divorced, people would always give me this look that was saying to me, "I feel so sorry for you." I felt like saying, "Please don't give me that look! I didn't just tell you I had cancer. I'm just a little lonely, that's all." The thing is, it took awhile, but I kicked the loneliness thing. I learned how to be alone, and it's a wonderfully empowering feeling. I can go to a movie or shopping or sit in a coffee shop myself and enjoy it. That to me is very empowering. Loneliness is hard at first, but you won't be lonely forever. Learn how to be alone!

4. Your house is your own. Do you realize that you can re-decorate and re-organize your home, and make it exactly the way you want it? Pink and shabby chic and feminine for the ladies. Guys, bean bag chairs, dart boards, pool tables, the biggest flat screen you can find... whatever you want! You're the boss!

5. You can really Live! I have a friend who was married for 27 years. Her husband blindsided her and left her for another woman. She was obviously devastated. In fact, there were times I was beyond worried about her and wasn't sure she'd be okay. Let me tell you what she has done over the past four years. She has run a marathon, she's traveled to Israel, Spain, China, and all over the U.S., she has joined a softball league, and she never says no to any adventure. She said she would never have done all these things if she was still married.

6. The door is open. Regardless of who left who, the door is now wide open for you to have a meaningful, loving relationship with someone who is right for you. If your husband or wife left you, they did you a favor. Because, who wants to be with someone who doesn't want to be with them? Mr. or Ms. Right is out there. Give it time and don't try too hard. Just enjoy your life. Refer to point #5!

7. Your mother-in-law just went bu-bye. For some people, never seeing their in-laws after divorce is very upsetting. To others, never having to deal with their in-laws again is a huge perk. So, obviously this only applies to people who look at never having to see their mother-in-law again as a gift. Everything that bugged you about her is ancient history! Woo hoo!

8. You just became a single parent. "Why is that a plus, Jackie?!" Because a lot of people I talk to tell me that they became a better parent after their divorce. As single parents, we appreciate our time with our children more. Quality always wins over quantity. In other words, sure, you may see your children a less number of days throughout the year, but if you take advantage of every moment you have with them, you will be truly fulfilled, and you will continue to be a wonderful parent, even better. Talk to your kids, laugh with them, hug and kiss them, play with them. Just love them. They need you now more than ever. And you are here for them.

Mesoraco homer in 11th gives Reds 6-4 win at Texas

Devin Mesoraco hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning and the Cincinnati Reds snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the AL West-leading Texas Rangers on Saturday night.

Mesoraco was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts before his 380-foot homer into the left-field seats off Kyle McClellan (0-1), which came right after Todd Frazier was hit by a pitch to start the 11th.

Cincinnati had lost six of seven and was coming off consecutive shutout losses before Shin-Soo Choo homered on the first pitch of the game.

J.J. Hoover (1-5) got the last two outs in the 10th, even after a walk and a hit. Aroldis Chapman worked the 11th for his 20th save in 23 chances.

The Reds had also lost five straight interleague games.

London just lack the fire-power to overturn the odds against Leitrim in Hyde Park replay

When the drawn game was finished last Sunday, we tried vainly to get someone from the London set-up to complain about not being allowed to bring Leitrim to Ruislip for the replay. But take it they?re not happy. The question now is whether they can funnel their pique into a performance good enough to beat Leitrim.

For all that Leitrim were the better side at various stages in the drawn game, at no point were the favourites more than two points ahead.

London don?t have the consistent long-range point-scoring ability of other teams but they do have a certain stickability that keeps them in the game.

Plus, they score goals. Only Kerry, Cork, Mayo and Leitrim have scored more than them in this year?s championship so far ? and Leitrim got theirs in New York. As long as London are within touching distance, Leitrim will not feel safe tomorrow, especially with as dangerous a forward as Se?n Kelly to come off the bench.

If midfielder Mark Gottsche has recovered enough from the foot injury that forced him into an early exit last week, London have a real chance.

You could say the same for Leitrim when it comes to star forward Emlyn Mulligan.

One way or the other, London will play four games this summer. Assuming a tighter day?s work at the back to keep out soft goals, Leitrim have it in them to make sure that fourth game is a qualifier rather than a Connacht final.

Findings reported from Albert Einstein College of Medicine describe advances in diabetes

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Clinical Trials Week -- Investigators publish new report on Diabetes. According to news reporting originating in Bronx, New York, by NewsRx journalists, research stated, "Obesity is important for the development of type-2 diabetes as a result of obesity-induced insulin resistance accompanied by impaired compensation of insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. Here, based on a randomized pilot clinical trial, we report that intranasal oxytocin administration over an 8-week period led to effective reduction of obesity and reversal of related prediabetic changes in patients."

The news reporters obtained a quote from the research from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, "Using mouse models, we further systematically evaluated whether oxytocin and its analogs yield therapeutic effects against prediabetic or diabetic disorders regardless of obesity. Our results showed that oxytocin and two analogs including [Ser4, Ile8]-oxytocin or [Asu1,6]-oxytocin worked in mice to reverse insulin resistance and glucose intolerance prior to reduction of obesity. In parallel, using streptozotocin-induced diabetic mouse model, we found that treatment with oxytocin or its analogs reduced the magnitude of glucose intolerance through improving insulin secretion. The anti-diabetic effects of oxytocin and its analogs in these animal models can be produced similarly whether central or peripheral administration was used."

According to the news reporters, the research concluded: "Oxytocin and its analogs have multi-level effects in improving weight control, insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion, and bear potentials for being developed as therapeutic peptides for obesity and diabetes."

Senate Passes Immigration Bill - The New American

The Senate voted 68-to-32 to pass the long-debated immigration bill on June 27, with 14 Republicans joining 52 Democrats and two independents. The extraordinary protocol for the vote highlighted its importance, with Vice President Biden presiding and the senators voting from their desks.

The New York Times summarized the bill?s key components as providing a 13-year path to citizenship for the 11 million ?unauthorized? immigrants in the country, as well as tough border security provisions that must be put in place before the illegal immigrants can gain legal status.

(For AP?s roll call of the vote, click here.)

The Times reported that the ?Gang of Eight? group of senators who drafted the bill?s framework delivered supportive speeches prior to the vote, signaling out Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). When he finished his speech, the other ?Gang of Eight? senators gathered around him on the floor, patting him on the back and praising his oratory. ?Good job,? said one. ?I?m proud of you,? said another.

Rubio?s highly visible role in the process was seen by many as an attempt by the Republican Party to improve its standing among Hispanic voters.

A report in USA Today described the passage of the bill as ?a historic step forward for President Obama on one of the most important planks of his second-term agenda.?

Following the vote, the White House released President Obama?s statement commenting on the bill?s passage. It read, in part:

If enacted, the Senate bill would establish the most aggressive border security plan in our history. It would offer a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are in this country illegally ? a pathway that includes passing a background check, learning English, paying taxes and a penalty, and then going to the back of the line behind everyone who?s playing by the rules and trying to come here legally. It would modernize the legal immigration system so that it once again reflects our values as a nation and addresses the urgent needs of our time. And it would provide a big boost to our recovery, by shrinking our deficits and growing our economy.

Today, the Senate did its job. It?s now up to the House to do the same.?

As this process moves forward, I urge everyone who cares about this issue to keep a watchful eye.?Now is the time when opponents will try their hardest to pull this bipartisan effort apart so they can stop commonsense reform from becoming a reality.?We cannot let that happen.?

The Washington Post reported that Thursday?s vote was the culmination of more than six months of negotiations led by the ?Gang of Eight,? noting that two of the group?s most high-profile members ? John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) ? had worked together as they rarely had in the past.

The Post summarized the bill?s progression through the Senate by noting that following the release of a proposed bill by the ?Gang of Eight? in April, the Senate Judiciary Committee spent 37 hours in deliberations spread over three weeks, during which the senators considered almost 300 proposed amendments. Finally, the panel referred the legislation to the full Senate.

However, the reporting on the thoroughness and benefits of the bill seems highly embellished. Though the Congressional Budget Office did claim in a recent report that the immigration law would provide new revenues for government, not a drain on government, the report admits that it did not take into account many costs, such as the future costs of immigrants as they use Social Security and other government benefits. All indications show that the bill will be an economic boondoggle for the country. Also, the CBO reported that, even if the bill works exactly as its sponsors say it will, it will reduce immigration by only 25 percent going forward?? hardly a resounding success.

In a recent article, we reported how two of the Senate?s leading opponents to the immigration bill had attempted, without success, to amend it:

A press release sent from [Sen. Ted] Cruz?s office on June 19 noted that the senator had ?filed additional amendments to S. 744 [the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act introduced by the Gang of Eight] to significantly improve border security measures, fix our immigration system in a manner that champions legal immigration, and uphold the rule of law by ensuring illegal immigrants granted legal status under this bill?are not given a path to citizenship.? [Emphasis added.]

?I very much want commonsense immigration reform to pass, but if this bill becomes law as currently written, it will not solve the problem. Instead it will make the problem of illegal immigration worse,? Sen. Cruz said.

The other senator also attempting to put some teeth into the bill was Rand Paul (R-Ky.):

?If [the immigration bill] got stronger, I could consider it, but since they rejected my call to have Congress involved with determining whether the border is secure, I can?t imagine how they can get me back unless they come back to me and say, ?We've changed our mind,?? Paul said. ?We would like Congress to be involved in this.?

The Daily Caller reported on Wednesday that the Senate voted 61 to 37 to table Paul?s ?Trust but Verify? amendment to the immigration bill that would have required a vote from Congress affirming that border security measures were working before illegal (aka ?undocumented?) immigrants could be granted legal status.

Not surprisingly, both Cruz and Paul voted ?No? on Thursday.

Following the Senate vote, the immigration bill will go to the Republican-controlled House, where passage is far from assured.?

The Chicago Sun-Times quoted from the statement by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio):

Apparently, some haven?t gotten the message. The House is not going to take up and vote on whatever the Senate passes. We?re going to do our own bill through regular order, and it?ll be legislation that reflects the will of our majority and the will of the American people. And for any legislation, including a conference report, to pass the House, it?s going to have to be a bill that has the support of the majority of our members.

Despite Boehner?s strongly worded statement, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Thursday that he was ?confident? the House would pass the Senate?s immigration legislation.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor expressed concern that most legislators ? including the senators who voted for the bill ? don?t know a great deal about what the bill contains. ?I can?t tell you what?s in that big Senate bill, and the well over 1,000 or 1,500 pages that it may be, and that?s my concern,? Cantor said in an interview with Yahoo News. ?I don?t know if you could ask a lot of the senators what?s in that bill. And that?s my concern.?

The Senate bill just passed included a provision to spend almost $40 billion over the next decade to improve border enforcement, including adding 20,000 new Border Patrol agents and 700 miles of fencing along the southern border. This addition was the result of an amendment proposed by Senators Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and John Hoeven (R-N.D.). The New York Times noted that that amendment ?helped bring along more than a dozen reluctant Republicans, who were hesitant to support the overall bill without a clear plan to secure the southern border, in order to ward off a future wave of illegal immigration.?

However, as we noted in our article, ?Permanent Amnesty, Temporary Border?:

Plans such as those produced by the ?Gang of 8? often include the promise of border security, in order to mollify the concerns of those who fear that open borders combined with amnesty and generous government benefits for illegals would produce an uncontrollable wave of illegal immigration....

??Border security? has been promised in the past in connection with legalizing illegal immigrants who had already crossed the border. But though amnesty has been provided, the promise of border security remains elusive.

30 sent to hospitals in Las Vegas as record heat parks over West, Southwest

In Los Angeles, heat-related power failures snarled traffic, and in Death Valley, where temperatures hit triple digits, the forecast is could bring a record 129 degrees. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

More than thirty people were taken to hospitals for heat-related injuries and illnesses Friday at a music festival in Las Vegas, authorities said, as a wave of life-threatening blistering temperatures blazed across the West.

Clark County fire personnel treated close to 200 people for heat-related nausea, vomiting and fatigue Friday afternoon and evening at the Vans Warped Tour, an eclectic outdoor music festival at the Silverton Casino off the famous Strip.

Most were given water and taken to shaded areas, but 34 had to be taken to hospitals for further treatment, the fire department said.

"It's pretty intense," said Clark County spokesman Eric Pappa. "We're used to summer temperatures of 100, 105. But we're beyond 100. It's a scorcher."

The high temperature officially hit 117 degrees at Las Vegas-McCarran International Airport ? equaling the airport's record ? Friday as thousands of people streamed to the casino site for the festival. The thermostat fell slightly Saturday, leveling at a still-steamy 105 degrees, according to The Weather Channel.

Records are similarly expected to be broken across the West and the Southwest through the weekend and into next week, the National Weather Service said, thanks to a high pressure "dome" parked over the sprawling region.

Death Valley, Calif., could even top 130 degrees Saturday through Monday, just below the world record high of 134 recorded there on July 10, 1913, The Weather Channel said.

Temperatures in Phoenix are expected to soar between 115 and 120 degrees. In western parts of Arizona, temperatures could reach 125.

Officials in Arizona warned residents to take precautions.

"If you get dizzy or lightheaded, those are some signs of dehydration. If you become confused, that's a real warning sign," Dr. Kevin Reilly of the University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine told NBC station KVOA of Tucson.

In Las Vegas, meanwhile, the National Weather Service warned of the potential for a "life-threatening heat event." Temperatures were expected to match those of a July 2005 heat wave when 17 people died in the Las Vegas Valley.

The extreme weather is expected to reach Reno, Nev., reach across Utah and stretch into Wyoming and Idaho, where forecasters are predicting potentially lethal hot spells. Triple-digit temperatures were forecast during Idaho's Special Olympics in Boise.

Matt York / AP

Runners take advantage of lower temperatures at sunrise Thursday in Mesa, Ariz. Excessive heat warnings will continue for much of the Desert Southwest as building high pressure triggers major warming in eastern California, Nevada and Arizona.

Organizers urged coaches to prepare their athletes.

"The basic stuff, wearing breathable, appropriate clothes, staying in the shade as much as possible, staying hydrated is obviously a big thing," Matt Caropino, director of sports and training for Special Olympics Idaho, told NBC station KTVB. "We've put in place some misters that we're going to have at our outdoor venues."

The National Weather Service advised people to keep tabs on signs of potentially lethal heat stroke.

"Heat stroke symptoms include an increase in body temperature, which leads to deliriousness, unconsciousness and red, dry skin," it said in a report. "Death can occur when body temperatures reach or exceed 106-107 degrees."

Los Angeles was forecast to peak between the upper 80s and the lower 90s Saturday as inland communities like Burbank edge toward the low 100s. Palm Springs, Calif., no stranger to steamy summers, may peak at 120 degrees, NBC station KMIR reported. Sweltering heat also is expected for the state's Central Valley, according to The Weather Channel.

While the west remains hot and dry, the east is getting lots of rain that has resulted in flash flooding. Some of the worst flooding was in upstate New York where whole neighborhoods remain under water. ?The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

Commercial airlines were also monitoring conditions because excessive heat can throw flights off course. The atmosphere becomes less dense in extremely high heat humidity, meaning there's less lift for airplanes ? calculations that have to be made individually for every type of aircraft.

Triple-digit heat forced several airlines to bring operations to a halt after Phoenix climbed to 122 degrees in June 1990.

Daniel Arkin of NBC News contributed to this report.

Obama tells leaders to follow Mandela's example

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? President Barack Obama encouraged leaders in Africa and around the world Saturday to follow former South African President Nelson Mandela's example of country before self, as the U.S. president prepared to pay personal respects to relatives who have been gathered around the critically ill anti-apartheid icon.

"We as leaders occupy these spaces temporarily and we don't get so deluded that we think the fate of our country doesn't depend on how long we stay in office," Obama said.

Obama spoke at a news conference with South African President Jacob Zuma in the midst of a weeklong tour of the continent that also included stops in Senegal and Tanzania. But many other African nations are embroiled in religious, sectarian and other conflicts.

Obama decided to avoid stopping in his father's home nation of Kenya because of international disputes there. The International Criminal Court is prosecuting Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta for crimes against humanity, including murder, deportation, rape, persecution and inhumane acts allegedly committed by his supporters in the violent aftermath of Kenya's 2007 elections.

"The timing was not right for me as the president of the United States to be visiting Kenya when those issues are still being worked on, and hopefully at some point resolved," Obama said. He noted he's visited Kenya several times previously and expects he will as well in the future.

Obama and Zuma appeared at the Union Buildings that house government offices and the site of Mandela's 1994 inauguration as the country's first black president after 27 years behind bars for his activism.

The 94-year-old Mandela has been in a nearby hospital for three weeks after being admitted with a lung infection. Zuma told reporters that Mandela is in critical but stable condition and the whole nation is praying that he will improve.

Obama visited with two of Mandela's daughters and eight of his grandchildren Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, part of the former president's foundation. Obama said he told the family he hopes Mandela draws comfort from the time he's spending with loved ones.

"I also reaffirmed the profound impact that his legacy has had in building a free South Africa, and in inspiring people around the world ? including me," Obama said in a statement after the visit. "That's a legacy that we must all honor in our own lives.

Obama also spoke by telephone with Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, while she stayed at his bedside in the hospital. Machel said she drew strength from the call and that Obama added a characteristic "touch of personal warmth."

"I am humbled by their comfort and messages of strength and inspiration, which I have already conveyed" to Mandela, she said.

The White House said that in accordance with the family's wishes, Obama was not planning to visit with Mandela.

In nearby Pretoria earlier, Obama revered Mandela as "one of the greatest people in history," referred to him by his clan name as he praised South Africa's historic integration from white racist rule as a shining beacon for the world.

"The struggle here against apartheid for freedom, Madiba's moral courage, this country's historic transition to a free and democratic nation has been a personal inspiration to me, it has been an inspiration to the world," Obama said.

"The outpouring of love that we've seen in recent days shows that the triumph of Nelson Mandela and this nation speaks to something very deep in the human spirit, the yearning for justice and dignity that transcends boundaries of race and class and faith and country," Obama said. "That's what Nelson Mandela represents, that's what South African at its best represents to the world, and that's what brings me back here."

Zuma told Obama he and Mandela are "bound by history as the first black presidents of your respective countries."

"Thus, you both carry the dreams of millions of people in Africa and in the diaspora who were previously oppressed," Zuma said, reading from a prepared statement.

On other topics, Obama declined to commit to supporting South Africa's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. He said the U.N.'s structure needs to be updated and it would be "odd" for an expanded Security Council not to have African representation.

"How we do that and what fashion is complicated, it's difficult and it involves all kinds of politics," Obama said.

"Everybody wants a seat at the table, but when it comes time to step up and show responsibility, sometimes people want to be free riders," Obama said, adding he wasn't referring to South Africa specifically.

Zuma responded that he wishes the process of change at the U.N. would speed up.

Obama also said he wants to boost trade with Africa and plans to renegotiate an African trade pact to improve it for American businesses. He said he welcomes competition from other nations who have been aggressive in pursuing commercial opportunities in Africa, including China.

"I don't feel threatened by it. I think it's a good thing," he said. He added: "Our only advice is make sure it's a good deal for Africa." He said that includes making sure foreign investment employs Africans and doesn't tolerate corruption or take its natural resources without compensation for Africans.

Obama also is paying tribute to South Africa's fight against apartheid by visiting the Soweto area Saturday afternoon for a town hall with students at the University of Johannesburg. At least 176 young people were killed in Soweto township 27 years ago this month during a youth protest against the apartheid regime's ban against teaching local Bantu languages. The Soweto Uprising catalyzed international support against apartheid, and June is now recognized as Youth Month in South Africa.

The university plans to bestow an honorary law degree on the U.S. president.

Protesters under police watch demonstrated outside the university against Obama's record on surveillance and foreign policy. Demonstrators from a range of trade unions and civil society groups chanted, "Away with intelligence, away," holding posters depicting Obama with an Adolf Hitler moustache.

"People died in Libya. People are still dying in Syria," said 54-year-old Ramasimong Tsokolibane. "In Egypt, in Afghanistan in Pakistan drones are still killing people. So that's why we are calling him a Hitler. He's a killer."

Obama has been trying to inspire the continent's youth to become civically active and part of a new democratically minded generation. Obama hosted young leaders from more than 40 African countries at the White House in 2010 and challenged them to bring change to their countries by standing up for freedom, openness and peaceful disagreement.

Obama wraps up his South Africa stay Sunday, when he plans to give a sweeping speech on U.S.-Africa policy at the University of Cape Town and take his family to Robben Island to tour the prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars.

Obama has visited the island before, but said it's a particular privilege to bring his daughters back to learn its lessons.

12 musicians who are also food activists

Not all musicians fit the stereotype of being self-involved and shallow. In fact, many musicians also care about and promote social causes. When they are not selling-out stadium shows or releasing new albums, these 12 musicians lend their time ? and their voices ? to promote food and agriculture initiatives, and use their celebrity platform to raise money and awareness to combat hunger and poverty.

Co-authors Ellen Gustafson?and?Danielle Nierenberg, the co-founders of Food Tank, hope to bridge the domestic and global food issues by highlighting how hunger, obesity, climate change, unemployment, and other problems can be solved by more research and investment in agriculture.

China media warns Philippines of 'counterstrike' in South China Sea

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's state media warned on Saturday that a "counterstrike" against the Philippines was inevitable if it continues to provoke Beijing in the South China Sea, potentially Asia's biggest military troublespot.

The warning comes as ministers from both countries attend an Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting in Brunei, starting Saturday, which hopes to reach a legally binding code of conduct to manage maritime conduct in disputed areas.

At stake are potentially massive offshore oil reserves. The seas also lie on shipping lanes and fishing grounds.

Both China and the Philippines have been locked in a decades-old territorial squabble over the South China Sea, with tensions flaring after the Philippines moved new soldiers and supplies last week to a disputed coral reef, prompting Beijing to condemn Manila's "illegal occupation".

The overseas edition of the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, said in a front-page commentary that the Philippines had committed "seven sins" in the South China Sea.

These include the "illegal occupation" of the Spratly Islands, inviting foreign capital to engage in oil and gas development in the disputed waters and promoting the "internationalization" of the waters, said the commentary.

The Philippines has called on the United States to act as a "patron", while ASEAN has become an "accomplice," said the commentary, which does not amount to official policy but can reflect the government's thinking.

"The Philippines, knowing that it's weak, believes that 'a crying child will have milk to drink'," the People's Daily said, accusing Manila of resorting to many "unscrupulous" tricks in the disputed waters.

Beijing's assertion of sovereignty over a vast stretch of the South China Sea has set it directly against Vietnam and the Philippines, while Brunei, Taiwan and Malaysia also lay claim to other parts of the sea.

The 10-member ASEAN hopes to reach a legally binding Code of Conduct to manage maritime conduct in disputed areas. For now a watered-down "Declaration of Conduct" is in place.

On Thursday, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that countries with territorial claims in the South China Sea that look for help from third parties will find their efforts "futile", adding that the path of confrontation would be "doomed".

Last week, China vowed to protect its sovereignty over the Second Thomas Shoal, known in China as the Ren'ai reef. The Philippines is accusing China of encroachment after three Chinese ships, including a naval frigate, converged just five nautical miles (nine km) from an old transport ship that Manila ran aground on a reef in 1999 to mark its territory.

Last year, China and the Philippines were locked in a tense two-month standoff at the Scarborough Shoal, which is only about 124 nautical miles off the Philippine coast. Chinese ships now control the shoal, often chasing away Filipino fishermen.

Man paralyzed after saving drowning girl, dies at 43

Michael Patterson (photo: Facebook)Michael Patterson (Facebook)

Michael Patterson, the 43-year-old Georgia man who dived into a creek to save a 4-year-old girl from drowning and became paralyzed from the chest down during the rescue, died after spending three weeks in a hospital, The Associated Press reports.

Patterson's family shared the news on Facebook.

Patterson's bravery left many, including the woman whose daughter he rescued, stunned. "He jumped in head first and after I grabbed her, I looked back and he was floating on top of the water," Carlissa Jones told WSB-TV.com after Patterson's injury, which occurred on June 8.

Jones' daughter, Javea, was able to be resuscitated. Patterson broke his neck during the dive. He also developed respiratory acidosis, pneumonia and a bacterial infection after the injury, according to Fox News. The medical problems that came after the broken neck contributed to his death, Polk County Coroner Trey Litesey told news outlets.

Patterson's bravery was commended across the Web. Comments on the Yahoo News story after his injury reflected the immense respect people had for his actions.

One commenter wrote, "there really are no words to express the character of this man." Another wrote, "now this is what a hero looks like."

On Facebook, where Patterson's friends and family had set up a page to raise funds for his care, there was an outpouring of sympathy.

From the page:

Mike?s spirit and selfless actions inspired tens of thousands who sent cards, letters and emails and engaged in posts at the Friends of Mike Patterson Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Friendsofmikepatterson). His life and the lives of others are forever changed by his courageous, split-second decision to save another?s life. Mike?s tragic story made news headlines around the globe. His heroic act stirred an outpouring of emotion and a desire to help Mike in his time of need. His caring nature will forever be honored.

At this time, funeral or any other arrangements are not known. The Friends of Mike Patterson Trust will post additional information as it becomes available. Please keep Mike's family and friends in your prayers.

Patterson's dive was not the first time that he had demonstrated his bravery. A week before, he and another man had pulled a truck driver from his cab after the truck caught fire.

His mother told WSB-TV that her son didn't see what the big deal was about his part in rescuing the man from the truck fire.

"He said he did what he thought, what he hoped anyone else would have done for him. That's not a very common thing anymore, for anyone to care about someone they don't know," she told the Cedartown Standard.

Stocks snap three-day winning streak, open lower

stocks

The Dow and S&P 500 dropped on Friday as investors were reluctant to jump in following a three-day rally, but major averages still capped the volatile quarter with gains.

Stocks finished lower for the month of June, logging their first monthly drop this year. But all three major averages logged their third winning quarter in four. And so far for the year, the Dow has surged more than 14 percent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have spiked more than 13 percent each.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 114.89 points to close at 14,909.60, pulling back after logging its third-straight day higher. Still, the Dow posted its strongest first half of the year since 1999.

The S&P 500 fell 6.92 points to finish at 1,606.28. The S&P 500 logged its best first half performance since 1998. The Nasdaq eked out a gain of 1.38 points to end at 3,403.25.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, finished unchanged below 17.

For the quarter, the Dow rose 2.27 percent, the S&P 500 climbed 2.36 percent, and the Nasdaq soared 4.15 percent. Microsoft was the best performer for the quarter on the Dow, while IBM tumbled.

Financials topped the S&P 500 sector gainers in the second quarter, while utilities lagged.

Stocks initially opened in negative territory after Fed Governor Jeremy Stein highlighted the upcoming September policy meeting as a possible time when the central bank may need to consider paring back its QE program, adding that the Fed consider the overall economic improvements since it launched the stimulus instead of giving undue weight to the most recent round of tepid economic data.

(Read More: Buckle Up! Expect More Market Volatility This Year)

Stein's comments contradicted comments from other Fed policymakers who have suggested the central bank will bide its time before scaling back its bond purchases.

Menawhile, Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker said markets should brace for more volatility as they digest news the Fed will scale back bond buying later this year, but the swings will not derail growth. Lacker said he expects U.S. growth to remain around 2 percent for the "foreseeable future."

On the economic front, business activity index in the Midwest fell in June to 51.6 from 58.7 in May, according to the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago. A Reuters survey of economists on average expected a median reading of 56.0 in June versus the May figure of 58.7.

Meanwhile, consumer sentiment improved in late June, with the final reading on the overall index at 84.1, above the preliminary reading of 82.7, according to Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the final June reading of 82.8.

Japan's benchmark stock index hit a three-week high on the heels of positive economic reports that include much stronger than expected industrial output and retail sales numbers.

"We had better job market numbers, better production numbers, and even consumer prices are picking up. So data-wise, today is a pretty good day for Japan," said Takuji Okubo, principal and chief economist at Japan Macro Advisors.

Traders will closely watch gold prices, as the precious metal dipped below a key level of $1,200 per ounce. Analysts warned that miners could be severely affected if prices remain this low.

OPEC pumps less oil in June on Africa setbacks: Reuters survey

By Alex Lawler

LONDON (Reuters) - OPEC crude output has fallen in June due to disruptions in Libya and Nigeria, a Reuters survey found on Friday, inadvertently bringing supply closer to the organization's target.

Supply from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has averaged 30.38 million barrels per day (bpd), down from a revised 30.46 million bpd in May, the survey of shipping data and sources at oil firms, OPEC and consultants found.

The survey shows violence is making African producers OPEC's weakest supply link and the ambitious plans of Iraq, its second-largest producer, to expand exports are facing headwinds.

In June, largely involuntary curbs by smaller OPEC producers have outweighed extra crude from its top exporter, Saudi Arabia, which has ramped up supply in response to a seasonally higher requirement for crude in domestic power plants.

"It's Nigeria, Libya and Angola mainly," said a participant in the survey who declined to be identified. "This decline should support prices and you could make a case for it continuing for the next few months."

OPEC's June output is the lowest since March 2013, when the group pumped 30.18 million bpd, according to Reuters surveys, and leaves supply a mere 380,000 bpd above its output target of 30 million bpd.

With oil just above Saudi Arabia's preferred level of $100, OPEC at a meeting on May 31 in Vienna agreed to maintain the 30 million bpd target, leaving the door open for informal Saudi supply tweaks depending on demand.

The most notable drop in OPEC output has come from Libya. Protests at oilfields and terminals led to supply falling below 1 million bpd earlier in June, according to the state oil company, although production recovered later in the month.

Supply in Nigeria, increasingly disrupted by oil spills, flooding and theft, remains under downward pressure. Output of Nigerian Usan crude, originally expected to amount to four cargoes in June, was offline for most of the month.

The Usan operator, Total, declared a force majeure on loadings which is still in place. Another Nigerian crude grade, Bonny Light, remains under force majeure.

Iraq's exports have slipped to 2.35 million bpd so far in June due to poor weather disrupting loadings in the south and interruptions to pipeline flow in the north of the country, according to shipping data and industry sources.

Supply fell in Angola due to export scheduling. Shipments of grades including Saxi and Plutonio crude were lower than in May, when exports rose.

Iranian crude exports were estimated at around 1.1 million bpd in May and the survey found no significant change in June. U.S. and European sanctions on Iran have more than halved its exports since early 2012.

WSJ: Google working on an Android-powered game system, smart watch and new Nexus Q

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google might make another foray into living room hardware as it's currently developing an Android powered gaming console. Since that's just not enough of a rumor bomb, the talkative "people familiar with the matter" also claim a wristwatch and followup to its "postponed" Nexus Q project are on the way. If you believe the rumors, its reason for jumping into all these categories is to beat products Apple is reportedly developing in the same categories, with at least one of them launching this fall. Finally, the leaks indicate Google's next major Android update will be "tailored to low-cost devices in developing countries," and are ready to go in a much wider variety of devices.

That could mean laptops or even appliances running the rumored Key Lime Pie flavor of Android, built by manufacturers like Samsung which is already working on a watch of its own. Also mentioned is HP, which the report goes on to claim is building laptops that run Android. Companies like Ouya, Mad Catz, Pebble and GEAK probably think Mountain View is already late to the party, but official OS-level support and heavily marketed hardware could take these segments to the next level.

the potential of collectible trading card games to teach business

190286-hdI recently stumbled upon one of the latest entries to the Wizards of the Coast?s transmedial world that is the Magic: The Gathering franchise. I have a history with MtG, although it is a very small one. I have played the game for a year when I was about 13 years old. My impression of it was that it was a highly enjoyable and strategically deep game, that costed a ton of money (that I was not able to invest into it). Also, it is important to realize here that I played the game somewhat isolated since it was a very niche hobby in the part of Belgium where I lived, and there were no tournaments, trading events or shop selling single cards anywhere near. As a result, the only way I could ever get an elusive Black Lotus, for example, would be by finding it in a booster pack. So needless to say that MtG died out for me as I decided that there were more enjoyable games to spend money on (in my situation back then).

As time went on I played the 1997 Microprose game and the more recent Duel of the Planeswalkers for Playstation 3 a bit, but did not find them as fun as playing with actual people. I also wanted to give MtG: Online a try, but decided not to do so since I thought that it would cost a lot of money to build a reasonable deck. And then I saw MtG: Tactics on Steam and decided to have a quick peak, simply to see how well they managed to blend a turn-based tactics game (e.g. Heroscape, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc.) with the original card game.

To answer that question briefly (because that is probably not why you are reading this considering the title of this post), they did a decent job. The card game part is brilliant, the tactics part is a bit thin and could be improved (e.g. by adding a more intuitive line of sight, diminishing the power of the random critical hits, etc.), but I would rate it an 8 out of 10 game, which matches its score on?Metacritic?if you?d deduct extra points for the terrible interface, outdated graphics and some annoying bugs. If you like mild tactics games and MtG then it is definitely work checking out. I would just give it a try to see the amazing MtG artwork come alive on the screen.

So what about the business skills, Bob? I am glad you asked. When I started playing the game, I liked it quite a bit, but I was still worried about the money it would cost me to keep playing. After all, free to play micro-payment games are seldomly, well? free to play. Reading the comments on Metacritic confirms this. For example, Aquila noted how:

?The free to play part is shockingly short. Dishonest marketing where people will trap for spending huge amounts of money. And a HUGE pay to win factor is present. So don?t trap for it people! But the game itself is fun if it was normally priced it will be a between 6 and 8. (Aquila, Metacritic)?

Normally, that would turn me away from the game, but I enjoyed the game enough to see if I could find a loop. After all, in Warstorm, another TCG I once played, I had managed to become a free player with a few competitive decks and that game sure was very tight in terms of its economic system. MtG: Tactics is a lot more flexible towards the amount of money a player needs to spend to enjoy the game. Here is what I found:

  • In-game gold can be acquired by completing daily missions, up to 14 gold per day.
  • Boosters can only be bought by paying $3.
  • Boosters can also be acquired by defeating at least one opponent in a tournament that costs 20 in-game gold.
  • Singles can be bought and sold in an auction house.
  • Players are allowed to trade cards and in-game gold.

So that means that if you use tournaments as your main income of cards, that you can play a tournament every two days. The cards you win there can then be sold at the auction house for more in-game gold, potentially creating a positive feedback loop. Unfortunately, you have to defeat an opponent to convert 20 gold into a booster, so that will difficult without already having many good cards.

However, the MtGT community realized that this would make the game a lot less accessible for people who want to play it casually, and has made it very common for the winner of round one to refund the loser?s 20 in-game gold. After all, selling off the cards you do not need from your free booster easily nets more than 20 in-game gold.

Figuring all this out seems like an interesting exercise for economy students in secondary school. I?ll admit that this is not exactly the same as writing up a business model, but I do see some potential here. Another ? albeit more obvious ? application of the game is in its trading aspects. I have recently attended a session on negotation techniques at an empty moment at a conference, and it is remarkable how those techniques have paid off in MtG: Tactics.

So this could be an interesting topic for a master?s thesis or design research project. Based on my experiences with MtG: Tactics, I would therefore say that there is a lot of potential in developing a ?homework? trading card game for secondary school, in particular if the game itself could be a learning experience as well (such as?Elementeo). Economy teachers could use it to study the economic system that grows from within the game, art teachers could let students design their own cards, math teachers could use the game to teach probabilities, language teachers could let students write stories within the game world, and so on.
