Permission was given to the representative of a new co-ed softball league to play games at Jordan Park this fall by the city parks and recreation commission when it met Thursday night.

Jonathan Davis, spokesperson for the group, asked for permission for the group to play its games at Jordan Park until work is completed on the co-ed field at the sports complex.

Davis is to get in contact with parks superintendent Ricky Calhoun and make sure the field is in playable condition. If it is, the league can begin play, the commission decided. Davis said that the games would start at 6:30 p.m., and would last no later than 9:30 p.m., at one hour per game and depending on how many teams sign up.

Discussing liability insurance, the commission noted that the city had immunity from claims, but suggested that Davis either get insurance or require participants to sign a waiver.

The group also reviewed quotes that had been submitted on two types of bleacher covers to be used at the city parks. It is hoped that recreational grant funding can be secured from the state to pay for the covers, as well as for lights at the new softball field and batting cages for the sports complex and Jordan Park. The grant application must be turned in by August 26. The submitted quotes did not account for all the needed covers, and ranged from $53,000 to $72,000. If the grant is received, more specifics will be included in the advertisement for bids.

The group tabled a decision on whether or not to charge admission to the splash pad next season (it closes for the year Friday). Admission fees would be used to pay an employee to make sure splash pad users followed the rules of the facility and prevent vandalism. Earlier, the commission had issued a call for volunteers to help monitor the pad, but none were forthcoming.

In other business, the council:

? agreed to allow Rev. Irvin Thomas of Warren to present a gospel music concert at Jordan Park this Sunday, provided it ends by 8:30 p.m. Mayor Allen Maxwell said that he would like to see the commission establish a policy for use of the city's parks, and have a formal procedure in place, operated through city hall.

? arranged to ask representatives from all of the various leagues and groups using the park to appear at the commission's September meeting and discuss the recent seasons, including such information as number of participants and financial report.
