Samsung Group (|hanja=}}; ) is a South Korean multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. It comprises numerous subsidiaries and affiliated businesses, most of them united under the Samsung brand, and is the largest South Korean chaebol.

Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-chull in 1938 as a trading company. Over the next three decades the group diversified into areas including food processing, textiles, insurance, securities and retail. Samsung entered the electronics industry in the late 1960s and the construction and shipbuilding industries in the mid-1970s; these areas would drive its subsequent growth. Following Lee's death in 1987, Samsung was separated into four business groups - Samsung Group, Shinsegae Group, CJ Group and Hansol Group. Since the 1990s Samsung has increasingly globalised its activities, and electronics, particularly mobile phones and semiconductors, has become its most important source of income.

Notable Samsung industrial subsidiaries include Samsung Electronics (the world's largest information technology company measured by 2012 revenues), Samsung Heavy Industries (the world's second-largest shipbuilder measured by 2010 revenues), and Samsung Engineering and Samsung C&T (respectively the world's 35th- and 72nd-largest construction companies). Other notable subsidiaries include Samsung Life Insurance (the world's 14th-largest life insurance company), Samsung Everland (operator of Everland Resort, the oldest theme park in South Korea),Samsung Techwin (a surveillance, aeronautics, optoelectronics, automations and weapons technology company). and Cheil Worldwide (the world's 19th-largest advertising agency measured by 2010 revenues).

Samsung has a powerful influence on South Korea's economic development, politics, media and culture, and has been a major driving force behind the "Miracle on the Han River". Its affiliate companies produce around a fifth of South Korea's total exports.

Name

According to the founder of Samsung Group, the meaning of the Korean hanja word Samsung () is "tristar" or "three stars". The word "three" represents something "big, numerous and powerful"; the "stars" mean eternity.

History

1938 to 1970

In 1938, Lee Byung-chull (1910?1987) of a large landowning family in the Uiryeong county came to the nearby Daegu city and founded Samsung Sanghoe (????, ????), a small trading company with forty employees located in Su-dong (now Ingyo-dong). It dealt in groceries produced in and around the city and produced its own noodles. The company prospered and Lee moved its head office to Seoul in 1947. When the Korean War broke out, however, he was forced to leave Seoul and started a sugar refinery in Busan named Cheil Jedang. After the war, in 1954, Lee founded Cheil Mojik and built the plant in Chimsan-dong, Daegu. It was the largest woollen mill ever in the country and the company took on the aspect of a major company.

Samsung diversified into many areas and Lee sought to help establish Samsung as an industry leader in a wide range of enterprises, moving into businesses such as insurance, securities, and retail. Lee placed great importance on industrialization, and focused his economic development strategy on a handful of large domestic conglomerates, protecting them from competition and assisting them financially.

In 1948, Cho Hong-jai (the Hyosung group?s founder) jointly invested in a new company called Samsung Mulsan Gongsa (??????), or the Samsung Trading Corporation, with the Samsung Group founder Lee Byung-chull. The trading firm grew to become the present-day Samsung C&T Corporation. But after some years Cho and Lee separated due to differences in management between them. He wanted to get up to a 30% group share. After settlement, Samsung Group was separated into Samsung Group and Hyosung Group, Hankook Tire, and others.

In the late 1960s, Samsung Group entered into the electronics industry. It formed several electronics-related divisions, such as Samsung Electronics Devices Co., Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Samsung Corning Co., and Samsung Semiconductor & Telecommunications Co., and made the facility in Suwon. Its first product was a black-and-white television set.

1970 to 1990

In 1980, Samsung acquired the Gumi-based Hanguk Jeonja Tongsin and entered the telecommunications hardware industry. Its early products were switchboards. The facility were developed into the telephone and fax manufacturing systems and became the centre of Samsung's mobile phone manufacturing. They have produced over 800 million mobile phones to date. The company grouped them together under Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in the 1980s.

After the founder's death in 1987, Samsung Group was separated into four business groups - Samsung Group, Shinsegae Group, CJ Group and Hansol Group. Shinsegae (discount store, department store) was originally part of Samsung Group, separated in the 1990s from the Samsung Group along with CJ Group (Food/Chemicals/Entertainment/logistics) and the Hansol Group (Paper/Telecom). Today these separated groups are independent and they are not part of or connected to the Samsung Group. One Hansol Group representative said, "Only people ignorant of the laws governing the business world could believe something so absurd," adding, "When Hansol separated from the Samsung Group in 1991, it severed all payment guarantees and share-holding ties with Samsung affiliates." One Hansol Group source asserted, "Hansol, Shinsegae, and CJ have been under independent management since their respective separations from the Samsung Group." One Shinsegae Department Store executive director said, "Shinsegae has no payment guarantees associated with the Samsung Group."

In the 1980s, Samsung Electronics began to invest heavily in research and development, investments that were pivotal in pushing the company to the forefront of the global electronics industry. In 1982, it built a television assembly plant in Portugal; in 1984, a plant in New York; in 1985, a plant in Tokyo; in 1987, a facility in England; and another facility in Austin in 1996. As of 2012, Samsung has invested more than in the Austin facility, which operates under the name Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC. This makes the Austin location the largest foreign investment in Texas and one of the largest single foreign investments in the United States.

1990 to 2000

Samsung started to rise as an international corporation in the 1990s. Samsung's construction branch was awarded a contract to build one of the two Petronas Towers in Malaysia, Taipei 101 in Taiwan and the Burj Khalifa in United Arab Emirates. In 1993, Lee Kun-hee sold off ten of Samsung Group's subsidiaries, downsized the company, and merged other operations to concentrate on three industries: electronics, engineering, and chemicals. In 1996, the Samsung Group reacquired the Sungkyunkwan University foundation.

Samsung became the largest producer of memory chips in the world in 1992, and is the world's second-largest chipmaker after Intel (see Worldwide Top 20 Semiconductor Market Share Ranking Year by Year). In 1995, it created its first liquid-crystal display screen. Ten years later, Samsung grew to be the world's largest manufacturer of liquid-crystal display panels. Sony, which had not invested in large-size TFT-LCDs, contacted Samsung to cooperate, and, in 2006, S-LCD was established as a joint venture between Samsung and Sony in order to provide a stable supply of LCD panels for both manufacturers. S-LCD was owned by Samsung (50% plus 1 share) and Sony (50% minus 1 share) and operates its factories and facilities in Tangjung, South Korea. As on 26 December 2011 it was announced that Samsung had acquired the stake of Sony in this joint venture.

Compared to other major Korean companies, Samsung survived the 1997 Asian financial crisis relatively unharmed. However, Samsung Motor was sold to Renault at a significant loss. , Renault Samsung is 80.1 percent owned by Renault and 19.9 percent owned by Samsung. Additionally, Samsung manufactured a range of aircraft from the 1980s to 1990s. The company was founded in 1999 as Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the result of merger between then three domestic major aerospace divisions of Samsung Aerospace, Daewoo Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Space and Aircraft Company. However, Samsung still manufactures aircraft engines and gas turbines.

2000 to present

In 2001 Samsung Techwin became the sole supplier of a combustor module for the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 used by the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger airliner. Samsung Techwin is also a revenue-sharing participant in the Boeing's 787 Dreamliner GEnx engine program.

In 2010, Samsung announced a 10-year growth strategy centred around five businesses. One of these businesses was to be focused on biopharmaceuticals, to which the Company has committed .

In December 2011, Samsung Electronics sold its hard disk drive (HDD) business to Seagate.

In the first quarter of 2012, Samsung Electronics became the world's largest mobile phone maker by unit sales, overtaking Nokia, which had been the market leader since 1998. In the August 21st edition of the Austin American-Statesman, Samsung confirmed plans to spend 3 to 4 billion dollars converting half of its Austin chip manufacturing plant to a more profitable chip. The conversion should start in early 2013 with production on line by the end of 2013.

On August 24, 2012, a U.S jury ruled that Samsung had to pay Apple Incorporated US$1.05 billion dollars in damages for violating its patents on smartphone technology. Samsung decried the decision saying that the move could harm innovation in the sector. It also followed a South Korean ruling that said both companies were guilty of infringing on each other's intellectual property. In the first trading after the ruling, Samsung shares on the Kospi index fell 7.7%, the largest fall since October 24, 2008, to 1,177,000 Korean won. Apple then sought to ban the sales of eight Samsung phones (Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail) in the United States which has been denied by Judge Koh.

On September 4, 2012, Samsung announced it plans to examine all of its Chinese suppliers for possible violations of labor policies. The company said it will carry out audits of 250 Chinese companies that are its exclusive suppliers to see if children under the age of 16 are being used in their factories.

Acquisitions and attempted acquisitions

For a company of its size Samsung has made relatively few acquisitions.

; Rollei ? Swiss watch battle : Samsung Techwin acquired a German camera-maker Rollei on 1995. Samsung (Rollei) used its optic expertise on the crystals of a new line of 100% Swiss-made watches, designed by a team of watchmakers at Nouvelle Piquerez S.A. in Bassequort, Switzerland. Rolex's decision to fight Rollei on every front stemmed from the close resemblance between the two names and fears that its sales would suffer as a consequence. In the face of such a threat, the Geneva firm decided to confront. This was also a demonstration of the Swiss watch industry's determination to defend itself when an established brand is threatened. Rolex sees this front-line battle as vital for the entire Swiss watch industry. Rolex has succeeded in keeping Rollei out of the German market. On 11 March 1995 the Cologne District court prohibited the advertising and sale of Rollei watches on German territory.

; Fokker, a Dutch aircraft maker : Samsung lost a chance to revive its failed bid to take over Dutch aircraft maker Fokker when other airplane makers rejected its offer to form a consortium. The three proposed partners ? Hyundai, Hanjin and Daewoo ? have notified the South Korean government that they will not join Samsung Aerospace Industries Ltd.

; AST Research : Samsung bought AST (1994) and tried to break into North America, but the effort foundered. Samsung was forced to close the California-based computer maker following mass defection of research staff and a string of losses.

; FUBU clothing and apparel : In 1992, Daymond John had started the company with a hat collection that was made in his house in the Queens area of New York City. To fund the company, John had to mortgage his house for $100,000. With his friends, namely J. Alexander Martin, Carl Brown and Keith Perrin, half of his house was turned into the first factory of FUBU, while the other half remained as the living quarters. Along with the expansion of FUBU, Samsung invested in FUBU in 1995.

; Lehman Brothers Holdings? Asian operations : Samsung Securities was one of a handful of brokerages looking into Lehman Brothers Holdings. But Nomura Holdings has reportedly waved the biggest check to win its bid for Lehman Brothers Holdings? Asian operations, beating out Samsung Securities, Standard Chartered, and Barclays. Ironically, after few months Samsung Securities Co., Ltd. and City of London-based N M Rothschild & Sons (more commonly known simply as Rothschild) have agreed to form a strategic alliance in investment banking business. Two parties will jointly work on cross border mergers and acquisition deals.

; Grandis Inc. - memory developer : In July 2011, Samsung announced that it had acquired spin-transfer torque random access memory (MRAM) vendor Grandis Inc. Grandis will become a part of Samsung's R&D operations and will focus on development of next generation random-access memory.

; Samsung and Sony joint venture - LCD display : On December 26, 2011 the board of Samsung Electronics approved a plan to buy Sony's entire stake in their 2004 joint liquid crystal display (LCD) venture for 1.08 trillion won ($938.97 million).

;NVELO, Inc. - Cache Software Developer : In December 2012, Samsung announced that it had acquired the privately held storage software vendor NVELO, Inc., based in Santa Clara, California. NVELO will become part of Samsung's R&D operations, and will focus on software for intelligently managing and optimizing next-generation Samsung SSD storage subsystems for consumer and enterprise computing platforms.

Pope makes first St. Peter's Square window appearance since resignation announcement

DEAR ABBY: I recently married a loving man who works full-time and is studying for his MBA online. A few months ago, he received a promotion and was transferred to another state, so after our wedding I moved here to be with him. While he was living here alone before our wedding, he got into some trouble with the law and he's now on probation. He was never in trouble before. I have no family or friends here, and he can't go out and socialize to meet new people now that he's under those strict guidelines.I have always been popular and have many friends back home, but I'm lonely and depressed now. ...

Everyone who owns a car must buy auto insurance. Getting insurance for the first time can seem a bit overwhelming. You want an insurance policy that covers your requirements and is cost effective. You?ll want to make sure you have the right coverage for your age, driving conditions and vehicle. There are useful auto insurance tips in this article.

Try dropping some of the coverage you do not need. If you have a car that is not of high monetary value, you may just want to cover your car with liability insurance. Cancel that expense and you could save a significant amount of cash. You should also think about dropping your comprehensive and liability coverage.

Most companies offer reductions in your premium for certain things. Ask your agent about these and see if you qualify. Most companies will offer breaks to someone who drives 7,500 miles or less each year. Also, you may pay a lower price if you use public transportation. Try carpooling if you can?t do that.

TIP! You might want to check with auto body repair companies in your area. See if they recommend certain insurers.

Try to get several quotes before deciding on insurance. Different companies use different formulas to determine your premium. When you check out several options, you will end up saving money.

You don?t have to ditch the idea of a sports car based on the mistaken impression that it necessitates higher premiums. In fact, only a few sports cars have high premiums. You may want to check with your insurance company to see which ones are the most affordable.

You should always review your policy before you renew it. Always stay up-to-date on new information. If you have changed jobs, you may save money if you are driving less to and from work.

TIP! Not all insurance companies are alike, but if you have a less than perfect record you will obviously pay higher premiums. Certain insurance companies are willing to help drivers that have a less-than-perfect driving record.

Insurances companies, as a rule, are all different. If you?re not satisfied with the quote you?ve been given, shop around and see what prices competitors are offering.

Another thing to check on is whether your coverage applies to a rental car. If your current plan does not cover a rental while your main vehicle is being repaired, you will need to purchase supplementary insurance. A policy like this can cost an additional $20 every day that your car is in the shop. Supplementary rental car coverage during the time it takes for your car to get repaired can cost you about 20 dollars daily.

TIP! An insurance company has time to decide if you are a liability to them as well. The insurer uses this time to look over your record, and make sure you?re not too high risk for them to insure.

In the unfortunate case of an accident that you have to file an insurance claim for, remember that your insurance company loves documentation. Use your cell phone to take pictures and record video of the damage caused by the accident and the location where it occurred. Another option would be to keep a camera with you all the time just in case you should need it in an emergency like this.

The best way to save money on your auto insurance is if you are a safe driver. If you drive well and do not get tickets, there is a good chance that you will qualify for a discount for being a good driver. Driving poorly is a good way to lose a lot of money. Demonstrating a safe driving record can lower your car insurance premiums.

Think about driving a car that isn?t so sporty. Insurance companies charge higher rates for insuring a sports car. Pick a small, less flashy, economical car. Vehicles with larger engines are more expensive to insure. Sports cars are at greater risk of theft, which further raises the cost of insurance.

TIP! Sometimes being a part of a well-known organization can help you get discounts on an auto insurance policy. AARP or some credit unions may make you eligible for auto insurance discounts.

As mentioned, before you buy insurance, it?s important to learn about the insurance you need and to do thorough research. If you know enough you should find insurance at a good price. Use the advice from this article to look for and purchase the auto insurance that is right for you.

Iowa governor blasts Rove super PAC as meddling

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Turmoil deepened among leading Republicans over efforts to ward off controversial candidates in the next election, as Iowa Republican Gov. Terry Branstad blasted a new candidate-steering plan by Karl Rove and warned him to stay out of state and congressional races.?

"I basically told Karl Rove that what he was doing is counter-productive and he needs to stay out of it," said Branstad, recounting a phone call to Rove, the leader of the new Conservative Victory Project.

In the aftermath of last fall's disappointing election outcome for the GOP, party leaders have been focusing on fielding more candidates with broad appeal - and fewer unpredictable ones - but have split bitterly over how to do it, worsening party tensions.

The push was prompted in part by the defeat of Republican Senate candidates Todd Akin in Missouri and Richard Mourdock in Indiana, who lost races the GOP expected to win. The two, who were backed by ultraconservative Tea Party groups, suffered after making controversial comments about rape, and their losses helped kill GOP chances of winning control of the Senate.

The Rove-backed group is planning to raise money and run ads in primary election campaigns to help candidates seen as more attractive to general election voters. The effort is intended to counterbalance fundraising groups that boosted strong conservatives in primary races.

But the targeted effort conflicts with a more diplomatic approach favored by Branstad and other mainstream Republicans wary of offending important officeholders and factions. Branstad, who is influential as the five-term governor of a political swing state that hosts the first nominating contest of each presidential campaign, was especially inflamed by indications the Rove organization would target Iowa arch-conservative Rep. Steve King if he tried to run for the state's open Senate seat in 2014.

There is similar tension about Republican candidates in West Virginia, where the GOP hopes to pick up a seat long held by Democrats, and in Georgia, where Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss' retirement has set off an internal fight between hard-right conservatives and the GOP establishment.

Branstad, in an interview with the Associated Press, said Rove's plan to use fundraising and negative advertising against suspect Republicans was "a mistake."

"If some outside group that has no connection to Iowa attacks somebody from Iowa, that is not smart," Branstad said.

In the weeks after Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin announced his retirement, Branstad has used private breakfasts with King and his House colleague Tom Latham to discuss who would be the strongest contender for seat, which has been held by Democrats for more than 30 years.

News of Rove's plans inflamed King, prompting him to issue an angry fundraising appeal in which he declared, "Nobody can bully me out of running."

Representatives of Conservative Victory Project did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But in a New York Times story earlier this month, organization director Steven Law was quoted as saying, "We're concerned about Steve King's Todd Akin problem...All of the things he's said are going to be hung around his neck."

King has strong support among conservatives but also a reputation for provocative statements. During the 2008 presidential campaign, he said a victory by Democrat Barack Obama would be welcomed by terrorists. "If he is elected president, then the Islamist, the al-Qaida, the radical Islamists and their supporters will be dancing in the streets."

King's devout followers, among Iowa's most conservative, were incensed at the news of Rove's group. But so were traditional GOP stalwarts like Richard Schwarm.

"I think that was a total backfire on Rove's part," said Richard Schwarm, a former Iowa Republican Party chairman and longtime Rove friend.

Duke -4 over Maryland (6:00 PM EST)

The Terps are getting a whole lot of respect here and BOTN is not really sure why. Sure the Dukies are of an emotional game vs rival North Carolina but hard to put on upset or letdown alert off six straight wins. The Blue demons waxed this same Maryland team 84-64 (-13.5) just three weeks ago, their sixth straight win in the series. Duke has also won their last two visits to the Comcast Center by 18 and 13 points. Maryland is in a tough spot here. True, that ACC home dogs are 14-4 but the Terps are also 1-5 in conference play when they allow more than 60+ points. In the last five meeting between these two, Duke has scored 84-73-74-87-80 ?.. a pretty clear indication that Maryland couldn?t stop this team with tear gas. There are lots of times to Beware the Turtle. Tonight is not one of them. Lay the wood.

    Recommendation: Duke 82 Maryland 66

How to Watch Asteroid 2012 DA14 Zoom Past Earth Today

Earlier today, a meteorite flew over the Chelyabinsk region of Russia, triggering a shock wave that injured hundreds of people and caused damage to buildings and vehicles in the area. Witnesses describe seeing a bright ball of light streak through the sky followed by a loud boom as the 10-ton meteorite entered the Earth's atmosphere and exploded.

While this is a fairly uncommon event, it does happen about once a decade and it's nothing to panic over. However, the meteorite isn't the only thing space is throwing our way today, although luckily it's the only one that's actually going to hit us.

How to Watch Asteroid 2012 DA14 Pass Earth

Later today (Feb. 15th), asteroid 2012 DA14 will fly past the Earth at about 17,200 miles away, which is close enough for observers in Australia, Asia and Europe to see with binoculars or a telescope.

It's about half the length of a football field, and while NASA says we have nothing to worry about (this time), if an object that size did hit the planet, it would have about the same impact of a 2.5-megaton atomic bomb, which is enough to wipe out a city if it hit in the right spot.

The asteroid will be above the eastern Indian Ocean starting at around 2:25 p.m. EST, and several websites will be hosting live feeds later in the afternoon/evening.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is hosting a live stream on Ustream, which started at noon EST.

The JPL will host a thirty-minute program with commentary, real-time animation to show the asteroid's position as related to Earth, and any other near real-time photos and video feeds from observatories in Australia. You can watch the feed on NASA's website or Ustream.

The Virtual Telescope Project 2.0 will be hosting a live feed of the asteroid from Italy.

    • 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. PST (6 p.m. to 4 a.m. EST)

The Clay Center Observatory in Massachusetts will be streaming a real-time high-def video on Ustream, which will be provided by a team of high school students with "extensive experience tracking and imaging asteroids."

The SLOOH Space Camera will be hosting several programs with video from Arizona and the Canary Islands. The shows will feature commentary from SLOOH's Paul Cox, astronomer and author Bob Berman, and Prescott Observatory manager, Matt Francis. You can watch on SLOOH's website.

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center will be streaming a three-hour feed on Ustream where viewers will be allowed to ask the center's researchers questions via Twitter or Ustream chat.

Will you be watching? If anyone manages to catch any photos or videos of their own, be sure to share the with us!

GOP tries to clear Lil' Fella out of the House by making him 2014's sacrificial lamb

    Hilarious.

National Review says that Michigan Republican sources tell them Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), the second-termer endorsed by Ron Paul who does a very good job holding down the hardcore libertarian fort in Congress, might try to decamp to the Senate next year:

?People are asking him to look at it, and he hasn?t closed the door,? says a Republican operative familiar with Michigan politics. ?If [incumbent Democrat Carl] Levin steps down, I think he?s going to run.?

Lil' Fella might actually be dumb enough to think that he can win a statewide race, which is why they're trying to talk him into not running for the 3rd District next year so they don't have to spend the money to primary him out of office. Otherwise, I can't imagine a reason why Republicans, who mostly hate the guy, would tell him to run for a Senate seat he'd certainly lose, even if it's Gary Peters.
