Microsoft's New 'Do-Not-Track' Feature: Good or ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

It's been a bad week for Microsoft.

On Monday, Google (GOOG) overthrew Microsoft (MSFT) as the third most valuable company in the U.S. based on market capitalization. (Microsoft has since reclaimed this title). Microsoft, once the top dog among tech companies, has continued to lose market share and dominance in the tech world as consumer demand has shifted away from the PC and software business.

Microsoft's stock has gained 12% so far this year?less than the S&P 500 (GSPC)?while shares of Google rose 14% and Apple shares more than 62%. Microsoft stock has been flat over the past decade. During that same period, Apple's stock has gained 313% and Google's 27%.

On Wednesday Microsoft received another blow. The company introduced its latest version of Internet Explorer to advertisers, expecting rave reviews. But advertisers panned the product and expressed unhappiness with the browser's do-not-track default setting which prevents advertisers from monitoring Internet sites consumers are visiting.

Microsoft's Head of Advertising Rik van der Kooi says the company "is putting consumers first." Advertisers say it will damage consumers' experience online because the result will be less content and offerings currently supported by advertising.

In a letter to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, top marketing and sales executives at some of the world's biggest companies including Coca-Cola, Ford and Walmart said the new default setting on Internet Explorer "will harm consumers, hurt competition and undermine American innovation and leadership in the Internet economy."

The Daily Ticker's Henry Blodget agrees that consumers could end up being the loser.

"Why would you choose to look at irrelevant ads when a little technological tweak could make it that they're much more relevant to you," he says. "Relevant advertising is good."

The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task gives Microsoft some credit for trying to put consumers first but he and Blodget say the biggest issue for the company remains its overall size and future direction.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Are There ...

With the recession practically now over and grinding down to a halt, the recovery period is starting. Therefore , many stocks are at record low costs and are ready for the picking, making it one of the very finest times to take a position in decades. To set apart between which stocks have fully bottomed out and which continue to fall, you need to use an automatic securities trading system which is specially engineered to use rational, algorithmic tools to decode market information and find rewarding trading possibilities. These systems scan the market steadily for the best dynamic stocks. In particular, here is the correct way to treble your investments overnite with an automatic stock trading method.

Stocks are influenced daily by foreseeable info and arithmetic. You should buy inexpensive early and sell higher later earning masses of greenbacks each day or thousands of greenbacks each week on your investment with the best stock market trading system. The advantages of an automatic securities dealing robotic system are large. This implies you quickly know which stocks are going to make a gain. * There are new technologies out there now that may considerably improve the chances for successful share trading. The nice thing about the stockmarket trading software is the undeniable fact that they're programmed to recognise the trends and warn you of which stocks are probably going to be good to make an investment in.

They're also comparatively cheap and simple to utilise. These programs only target penny stocks and shares and deliver literally the best stock picks to be found in the market because penny shares have a name of dramatically jumping in worth in a short term due to their less expensive costs leave them open to more trading influence from the outside. If you're think about making an investment in a stock market trader software then it'd be to your benefit to learn all you are able to about the numerous type and the good points and bad points of every one before purchasing one. I generally say that penny stocks and shares and stock-trading robots were made for one another, and it is just for this very reason like it can distinguish the good picks from the bad, you can make lots of money in the near term. It?s straightforward enough to do because you do not have to invest any money, instead you can doublecheck the performances of the picks which it generates for you in the market to find out how well they do in order that you can know irrespective of whether you should be making an investment in its next string of picks.

Look for a full refund guarantee because this is both an indication of good faith from the publisher and proof that they are pushing a credible programme, but also at the very same time you can test the programme first hand before completely committing to it. Focus upon learning investing techniques which will permit you to reach your money goals. If you're greedy and unduly aspiring at the beginning, you may potentially be disappointed in your results. Make smaller goals initially, then work up to more aspiring goals. Stay informed and recent on the newest market stories.

Many watch debate; some are pleased, few are moved

Like so many other Americans, David Becker knew long before Wednesday night's debate whom he'd be supporting in the presidential election. And, like so many other Americans, he tuned in anyway.

He was hoping his guy ? Republican Mitt Romney ? would step it up a notch, "get out there and take command, put more on the table, tell us what you will do."

"A guy like Romney should excite me," said Becker, 30, a Republican who manages real estate investments in Fairfield, a charming shoreline town on Connecticut's affluent "gold coast." ''But he has not done that."

That was before the 90-minute head-to-head matchup between Romney and President Barack Obama in Denver, their first of three debates before Election Day.

After it ended: "I think he had Obama on the run. I was pleased to see him finally take the gloves off."

And so it went on the night of the Great Debate in a country ever more polarized and an election year where most Americans, the pollsters tell us, have already decided whom to choose.

Across the land ? from an art museum in North Carolina to college campuses in California and Iowa, a retirement community in Florida and Becker's home along the Long Island Sound ? debate-watch gatherings were filled with partisans whose minds were pretty much made up before the candidates opened their mouths. The debate itself didn't change their votes.

But the exchange did serve to reinforce their decisions. And perhaps even more importantly for Romney, who has lagged in national polls, the night brought with it a sense of relief and excitement for Republicans who were worried their nominee might not have what it takes to beat Obama.

"Romney far succeeded my expectations," said Republican Art Rotelli, who joined a mixed group of Democrats, Republicans and even one undecided voter at Becker's house to watch the debate. Before things got started, Rotelli had some tough words of advice for his candidate: "He needs to provide a clear contrast, on health care, on the economy. "He needs to stop coming off as too careful."

Afterward, the 35-year-old advertising product designer was dreaming of an Election Day victory.

"Tonight is a game, it's not the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is in November. ... I'd say Romney got a pretty solid lead in this game."

Even some Romney opponents begrudgingly gave the debate "win" to the Republican.

"I'm a Democrat, but Romney was on fire tonight. Romney was aggressive, he attacked. ... I thought he did exceptionally well tonight ? unfortunately," said Karl Amelchenko, 36, a lawyer from Raleigh, N.C., who watched the debate at the city's Contemporary Art Museum, with one half of the concrete floor covered in red carpet, the other in blue.

Still, Amelchenko said, nothing he saw or heard will change his vote for Obama. "No," he said. "I mean, my mind was made up long before."

The museum event was meant to be bipartisan, but of the 30 or so people who showed up, all sat on the blue side of the room. Among them was a pair of registered independents ? Emily Millette, a software interface designer for IBM, and boyfriend Austin Reid, a physics doctoral student. Both came in leaning toward Obama and said they heard nothing to push them into the Romney camp.

"Truth be told I came here because it's an art installation, and I came here to be entertained," said Reid, 27, who planned to spend a few days fact-checking what he heard.

Unquestionably, the debates are among the most important events of a presidential campaign season. They attract more viewers ? the first debate especially ? than the candidates' convention acceptance speeches and far more attention than the avalanche of ads that many a voter may simply mute, said Bill Benoit, a professor who specializes in political campaign communication at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. They do have the power to potentially sway an undecided voter or switch a tentatively decided voter, he noted.

But mostly, the debates could serve to fire up partisans to give of their money and time to help their candidate win. "That matters," said Benoit, "especially this year because both candidates have to raise money in the general election like never before because they declined federal financing. Strengthening your existing attitude toward a candidate can be more important now, this year, than ever before in history."

That certainly happened for debate watchers at The Princess Martha, a 55-and-over apartment community in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, Fla. About 10 residents gathered with popcorn and lemonade in the building's theater room to watch the debate on a big-screen television. And most of those sitting in the comfy black leather seats had no doubt about whom they were supporting: Obama.

"I'm a very strong Democrat," said Mary "Ches" Applewhite, a 77-year-old retirement government worker who said she wouldn't even consider voting for Romney. "If he had stayed as moderate as he was in Massachusetts," she shrugged. "But he's not, now."

The issues of Medicare and Social Security are paramount for this group and as the debate went on, Applewhite nodded vigorously when Obama said that he didn't think "vouchers are the way to go" with Medicare.

Fellow resident Norton Klipstein, 86, felt that Romney put some pressure on Obama. Nevertheless, the performance did nothing to sway this Democrat's vote, either.

"I felt there was a greater integrity in Obama's expression," Kipstein said, adding that Romney "smiled too much."

At a gathering at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, geology major and first-time Republican voter Charles Epting was himself grinning widely after the debate, believing that his candidate hit a homerun.

"Where Romney really set himself apart is he wasn't the stereotype of this old, rich white guy," said Epting, 19. He especially praised Romney's vow to cut public broadcasting by joking that he loved Big Bird and Jim Lehrer, the former PBS newsman who moderated Wednesday night's exchange. Epting believed that helped show that Romney can use humor and charm to voice his convictions. "Tonight I think he was the more charismatic candidate."

Still other voters walked away from this first debate craving more specifics about the issue of the day ? the economy ? and other topics that went unmentioned during a discussion intended to focus on domestic issues.

About 40 University of Iowa students in professor Cary Covington's classes on the American presidency gathered in the rotunda of the Adler Journalism Building to watch the debate on a bank of TVs. The students participated in an experiment to test a mobile app developed by political scientists in which they responded to the candidates' statements in real-time by pressing buttons on their computers and phones reading "agree," ''disagree," ''spin," or "dodge."

Many students said they were watching their first presidential debate, and voting for the first time this election. Toward the end of the debate, they sat up and paid close attention as Obama talked about how he reformed the federal student loan program ? a major issue in a state where college graduates have some of the nation's highest debt loads. At least two were seen pushing "agree" on their phones.

Among the group was junior Kate Resch, 20, a native of Springfield, Ill., and self-described political moderate who supports Obama. She was stunned that two of her top issues ? abortion rights and funding for Planned Parenthood ? didn't even come up. She said she wanted to hear the candidates in their own words rather than in the ads she's seen. "It was an important topic that should have been brought up," she said.

In the all-important swing state of Ohio, Sylvia Bly of Cleveland was downright angry after the debate, frustrated with what she called Romney's lack of specifics. At 55 years old, Bly is struggling to find work since being laid off by a consumer products company in 2005. Her husband, a steelworker, lost his longtime job at a steel mill but was buffered by union benefits and has since gotten a new job. They lost his pension and have dipped far into their retirement savings as they try to get by.

Obama's "mindset supports people like my husband and myself who are caught in the middle," said Bly, who nevertheless plans to watch the next debates as well ? to see if Romney offers more detailed proposals, but also because she wants to know everything she can about whoever will be the next president.

"I want to know that the people who are running for office truly have my interests and my fellow Americans' interests at heart," Bly said. "The person I might not vote for may become president. I want to know what to expect."

Interview With Lisa Barone, Small-Business Marketing Expert ...

Lisa BaroneIf you?ve been reading me for a while, you know Lisa Barone is my favorite marketing guru ? she gets quoted in most of my weekend reading posts! So I?m tremendously excited to bring you this interview with Lisa Barone, internet marketer, popular blogger, witty tweeter, fabulous inspiration, and very very nice person!

In true Lisa style, she opens up about her work, marketing in general, and advice she has for small businesses. Let?s get to it! My questions and comments are in bold.

So, why Overit?

When I resigned from my last position I was looking for a considerable change of pace. I wanted to go back to working for a larger team, I wanted to be working in a far more creative environment, and I wanted the ability to be more ?hands on? with clients ? to blog less and to be considerably more involved in the strategy and the implementation of the work. Overit has given me all of that and a lot more.

Overit is truly a company of immense talent. The motion team is doing things with video and animation I haven?t seen anywhere else. The designers and developers will blow you away. The PR team is securing mentions from nationally known publications. Essentially, everything a client could ever want for their marketing campaign is right here, in-house, with all the departments working together. I?ve seen many companies call themselves a ?full service? agency, but I haven?t seen a company that truly represents that, without sacrificing quality, the way Overit does. The chance to work alongside these amazing people and learn from them was something I would have been crazy to pass up.

Also, have you seen our new office? Who wouldn?t want to come here every day?

I know, those photos look awesome! Speaking of awesome? What social media platform do you personally like best? (Let me guess? it?s Twitter, isn?t it?)

On a personal level, I like Twitter. Twitter allows me to have quick conversations, to answer questions on the fly, and to eavesdrop on other people?s conversations to benefit from them or add value when I can. Who DOESN?T like getting permission to eavesdrop? ;) Twitter is definitely the platform that has given me the most value over the years.? I seem to have an easier time connecting with folks there than I do on others.

I knew it! But for small businesses, which platform offers the best bang for their? time?

That?s going to depend on what your business is and where your customers are. In many cases it will matter less what site you choose to dedicate your time to and more that you really decide to dedicate your time to it.

I thought it was interesting that Facebook was said to drive?almost 50 percent of traffic to small news sites [PDF]. That?s pretty noteworthy. ?If I was a business starting out though, I still think Twitter would be my ?go to? just because it?s easier to dip your toe in without an established audience.

What are your favorite tools? I know you love Buffer (I tried it on your recommendation and now I can?t do without it!)? What else?

Yes, I?m having a passionate love affair with Buffer. If your readers haven?t tried it yet, I challenge them to give it a shot and then wonder how they ever lived without it. It?s great for personal use. If you?re looking for a Twitter tool to help you manage multiple accounts or make it easier to coordinate team tweeting, than CoTweet is pretty powerful, as well.

Harvest is my preferred time tracking tool. I?ve used it with two different companies now and it?s great at keeping me accountable to my day.

Rainymood is my favorite for blocking out the world and focusing on work. Writing in the rain is pretty sexy. ;)

Those are the tools I rely on most. To be honest, I don?t use that many in my day.? If one of your readers has a Facebook tool they really rely, I?d love to hear it. I haven?t tried any I?ve fallen in love with. I?d love to hear what I?m missing.

I need to try these out ? I?m opening Rainymood right now, since I?m easily distracted by sounds and I don?t like music on while I?m working.

Tell me, what?s the one thing you hate doing but still force yourself to do every week?

Besides working out? ;)

I don?t think there?s anything associated with my job that I hate or even strongly dislike. I?m pretty lucky to enjoy what I do. I love to share ideas, I love to be creative, and I love working with people who aren?t afraid to try new things. And I get to do that every day.

That is awesome (though not as controversial as I?d hoped.)

Right now, there are so many social media platforms and tools that ostensibly make things easier, and there is so much expert advice on what marketing activities a small business should be doing. What do you think is the most important marketing activity a small business should focus on?

Focus on serving your customers and making their lives easier. If that means providing content on your blog to help them get smarter about something ? then that?s the activity you want to focus on.

If it means holding in-store workshops so they can meet other people in their community with the same interests ? then do that.

If it means being available on Twitter to answer questions, make the time to do that.

Coming up with new ways to solve your customers? problems is the key to any business, but especially a small business. Figure out what it is your customers are searching for, and then consistently give it to them.

Apart from Small Business Trends, what?s the one site you?d recommend for small-business marketing advice?

It?s hard to pick out just one. I think there are a number of great sites for small business owners.? If you?re obsessed with local search, I?d want to make sure people are reading?Mike Blumenthal?s blog. If you?re looking for more general small business marketing advice to implement, then?Duct Tape Marketing is a great source of information.? If you?re looking for advice on how to use content marketing to convert, go to?Copyblogger.

The great thing about the number of sites and blogs out there is that you can find whatever it is you?re looking for.

Agreed. Though one challenge I often hear of from my small-business clients is that they struggle to make sense of their data? What?s the one metric they should keep an eye on?

Your conversion rate. You?re spending time and money trying to build your business, both on the Web and off ? so you want to make sure you?re profiting from your actions. That doesn?t mean everything needs to lead back to a direct sale, but you should have goal-tracking in place to help you keep track of conversion-oriented behavior. If someone signs up for your newsletter, subscribes to your RSS feed, places an item in their shopping cart ? these are things you want to be looking it. It doesn?t matter if you have 20,000 followers on Twitter. It matters that people are converting on your site, whatever a ?conversion? means to you.

I believe small businesses can be responsive towards their customers and in their marketing in a way big businesses struggle with. What other advantages do you think small businesses have?

Small-business owners have a lot of advantages that their larger competitors don?t have.

They can act faster. They?re more in tune with their customers. They speak the same language. They can be more bold and daring in their marketing. They can show more of themselves. They?re more relatable. There?s less red tape. They can provide a more intimate experience. If you?re a small-business owner, you?re in a great position. Small is the new big!

Speaking of showing more of yourself? you have built a reputation (and an ardent following!) by being honest and provocative. Would you recommend that as a strategy or did you just do what came naturally to you?

You have to be true to who you are in a way that helps you achieve your goals. For me that meant being open about my opinions and taking stands when I thought they were important. I wouldn?t recommend that everyone be as mouthy as I can sometimes be, but you want to take the time to understand who you are in your business, what you?re trying to build, and to identify your strengths and weaknesses. How can you be the most ?true? version of yourself? while still building your business.

I think the whole ?be authentic? thing is kind of a lie. Being the unfiltered version of yourself isn?t always the best course if it means you?re going to be an authentic jerk. I gave a talk at TEDx last year about why?our weirdness is our biggest selling point. I think more people should take the time to identify what?s unique about them and to use it.

Having been an entrepreneur yourself, what?s the biggest challenge you?ve faced as a business-owner?

The challenges are endless when you?re living life as an entrepreneur.? Obviously there are time challenges, issues scaling, and lessons in delegating, however, I think surrounding myself with the right people has always been something I?ve struggled with. Whether you?re a one-man (or woman!) shop or if you have a team of business partners, it?s important to work with people who share your core values and beliefs. You don?t have to agree on the small, day-to-day things, but you absolutely need to agree on the bigger picture and have the same core values. Finding that can be difficult. But if you surround yourself with the right people, I?ve found the rest of it kind of falls into place.

Thank you so much for doing this, Lisa. As usual, I find your words incredibly motivating, and I hope our readers will too!

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Online ...

Knowledge gives power and each one knows that without it your are lost. You have got to invest your resources to finding out about the numerous penny stocks and shares to understand when their market will change. Your success hinges on knowing when to purchase and offload at the right times. When the market is changing down or up is the variation between turning a good profit and losing cash.

These programs only target penny shares and deliver literally the most successful stock picks to be found in the market because penny stocks and shares have a name of incredibly jumping in worth in an exceedingly short term due to their less expensive costs leave them open to more trading influence from the outside. I generally say that penny stocks and shares and stock trading Bots were made for one another, and it is just for this very reason like it can demarcate the good picks from the bad, you can make a large amount of cash in the near term. It?s straightforward enough to do because you do not have to invest any money, instead you can doublecheck the performances of the picks which it generates for you in the market to find out how well they do in order that you can know regardless of whether you should be making an investment in its next string of picks. Look for a full refund guarantee because this is both an indication of good faith from the publisher and proof that they are pushing a credible programme, but also at the exact same time you can test the programme first hand before completely committing to it. It eventually and quickly topped off at $.57 at which point I took a conservative approach and got out with a decent profit of $370 on $180, so tripling my original investment. For that reason, I really like to say that automated stock dealing systems and penny stocks and shares were made for one another.

They also are perfect for more recent, less seasoned traders without the experience who are wanting to get into the market as this is a good example of how strong rational software can be. If you've been holding off on making an investment in the market as you thought it was too dodgy or the time wasn't right, there has actually never been a better time thanks to this recovery which we are beginning to enter. What if you had a method to tell which stocks are intending to make a slaughtering in the market? Spot the ?gainers? earlier without depending on brokers or deceitful insider information. Warren Buffett knows this idea well, and that made him the second-richest man in the world today. What if you might leverage a robust solid research of market factors and patterns, correctly foretelling the best stocks to buy? Now would not that give you the benefit easily? What if bots can do all of that for you? These are what automated stockmarket trading robotic systems do best. Stocks are influenced daily by foreseeable information and arithmetic. There are several online techniques that can be employed to enhance your data and experience about the exchange.

There are online coaching courses, reading material, and even programs which may let you practice your investment abilities.
