Can We Afford Eldercare? How Family Can Influence the Discussion ...

By Karen Schaeffer, Eldercare Consultant with Age & Dignity Consulting, LLC

Money issues are always of paramount concern when an eldercare discussion?begins. The presumed cost of eldercare can frequently frighten a family from any?type of action?even when action is necessary for the safety and well-being of their?aging loved one. In addition, poor communication, rumor and assumptions, and a?generalized lack of eldercare knowledge frequently undermines the process?well?before an effective eldercare solution can be formulated. Add in a heavy dose of?family conflict, and solutions can be stalled, fought over, or avoided. Avoidance of?the topic can prove to be even more costly, as delays in quality care often?compromise the safety and well-being of the senior.

The topics of money and the cost of eldercare?need to be addressed?and often the discussion?starts around the parent?s kitchen table. However, a?generalized uneasiness is often present when an?adult child is forced to discuss money issues with a?parent. Children, regardless of age, are often not?privy to their parent?s financial balance sheet.?Parents frequently do not share their income or?financial portfolio with their adult children, so?assumptions are often made that may not be?accurate. Mom and Dad could have lived a modest?life and now have substantial savings and a comfortable retirement income;?whereas, a more extravagant couple could have spent every penny they earned.

Fortunately, some seniors were wise planners and consulted with a financial?professional and estate attorney to preserve and grow their assets. In anticipation of?care and need, they may have purchased long-term care insurance, life insurance,?and funded an annuity. Others, perhaps through no fault of their own, might have?lost significant savings during economic turmoil, unemployment or a health crisis.
Frequently, adult children are surprised when they take a first-time look at their?parent?s financial situation. Every personal balance sheet reveals the true ability to?pay for care?this truth can be either frightening or liberating as it reveals limitations?or advantages in care choices.

Assumptions are also made about the cost of care. A discussion about the?need for eldercare assistance can be quickly sidelined by the remark, ?It?s so?expensive?? The minute that phrase is uttered by the senior or a family member,?often the door is slammed shut on any reasonable discussion of long-term care?options such as assisted living or homecare. Often, families rely on hearsay and truly
have not investigated the actual cost of care. A lack of knowledge about financial?resources and insurance and government benefits such as Medicare, Medicaid, and?the Veteran?s Aid and Attendance Benefit, contribute to the confusion and typically?stall the discussion. An unrealistic assumption of expense and affordability often?stops a discussion?well before the family has done their homework and discovered
the true costs of care.

Discussion and decisions can be sidelined by sibling rivalry, guilt and?resentment between adult children. They often have conflicting viewpoints about?their parent?s need for care, and sometimes question the severity or urgency of a situation. Some may want to play peacemaker and table the discussion, to avoid?potential conflict with a disagreeable parent or sibling. Unfortunately, avoidance of
the issue can place an onerous burden on the primary caregiver. For example, a?daughter who lives in close proximity to the parent may provide the bulk of care and?oversight, while a far distant son may only have a cursory understanding of his?parent?s daily needs. Rarely, is the responsibility for care equally shared between?siblings and for this reason, conflict, guilt and resentment can influence the
discussion about the need for professional eldercare assistance.

Adult children might have their parent?s well-being in mind when they start to?discuss the cost of eldercare but often, their own financial concerns and needs can?influence the discussion and alter the outcome. Parents frequently want to provide a?financial legacy for their children and grandchildren and do not want to ?waste it? on?paying for care. One adult child may want that legacy preserved to improve his or?her own financial health; another may wish for the money to be spent on the well-being of the parent. Sadly, aging parents often choose to delay ?costly? care since?they feel an obligation to financially support dependent adult children and?grandchildren. The financial health?and self-interest?of the adult child can greatly?influence or stall the discussion and decision to hire eldercare assistance.

Adult children need to honestly assess the situation to determine the care?needs of their loved one, and try to overlook their own personal feelings and?motivations. Clearly, the decision to hire eldercare assistance must be based on the?needs and well-being of the senior. The cost of care is always dependent upon the?level of care needed and obviously, care needs tend to grow and change over time.
For this reason an eldercare professional, such as an eldercare consultant, can help?guide the family during this difficult and confusing time. After a professional?assessment, she can help educate the family about the true costs of care, and dispel?assumptions and rumors of hyper-inflated eldercare costs. She can provide guidance?about long-term housing and care options that are appropriate for the senior?s need.

After an informed discussion with an eldercare professional, families may be?pleasantly surprised to discover affordable care options to enhance the quality of life?of their loved one.?Professional intervention can also help mediate a difficult family situation, and?be a neutral advocate for the senior. In addition to the helpful advice of an eldercare?consultant, a meeting with the senior?s financial advisor and attorney is advisable. If?the senior does not have a financial advisor or attorney, an accredited financial?professional and an attorney with an expertise in elder law should be solicited. A
thorough review of the senior?s assets should occur, before any specific changes are recommended. Legal documentation such?as wills, advance directives (living wills and medical and durable power of attorney), and trusts, can be executed if needed. In addition, these professionals can provide an overview of state and federal programs and benefits that may provide financial assistance for care, such as the VA benefit. With appropriate eldercare, financial and legal guidance, the senior client and family are both well-informed and protected.

Is Tylenol Safe for Dogs : The Wise Directory

August 1, 2012 ? Posted in Family?

One of the over the counter pain relief medication most used by people is Tylenol. Tylenol is a popular pain killer and in spite of the 1982 ?Tylenol Scare? that has caused a significant drop in this medication?s market share, this analgesic has made a comeback. Tylenol is one of the most used pain relief medications. Tylenol has regained its lost popularity and has once again captured a large percentage of the market share for analgesics. Acetaminophen is the generic name of Tylenol. Tylenol is an effective medication that has anti inflammation as well as fever and pain reducing capabilities. Unlike other pain medications, Tylenol does not cause gastric ulcer.

It has become the habit of pet parents to share human food with the pet. Dog owners would also share their own medications with the pet. Tylenol is one of the human medications given to the pet. This medication is safe for humans thus dog owners believe that it will be safe for the dog as well.

Human medications are specifically formulated for humans and can therefore have dangerous effects on animals. However, a pet owner would never ignore the sufferings of the pet if something can be done. As such, a dog in pain will receive any pain medications that can be found in the medicine chest. Tylenol can actually provide the dog relief from pain and discomfort.

Every time the dog is in pain, an owner that is not aware of the toxic effect of this drug on animals would pop a chewable tablet, a gel capsule or a coated caplet on the mouth of the dog. Tylenol, even in small amounts is toxic to dogs. From January 1998 to march 2000, over 1000 cases of acetaminophen (Tylenol) toxicity was reported to APCC.

Dogs have an adverse reaction to Tylenol although this drug is an effective pain relief. Even a single dose of this drug can already greatly affect a dog. In others, it would take several doses before signs of toxicity will be seen. Tylenol toxicity symptoms can include rapid and labored breathing, inappetence, diarrhea and vomiting, facial edema and low body temperature. This symptoms could lead to liver failure. This is an alarming condition as oftentimes, the dog would not respond to treatment. Tylenol can cause the poor oxygenation of the red blood cells so that the dog would develop cyanosis. Tylenol was classified by FDA as unsafe for pets.

Reading this have given you some idea about tylenol for dogs. Find out more by visiting Sarah?s Dogs.

Internal combustion engines go green

August 1st, 2012 by admin in News

Nowadays the internal combustion engine seems to be a little outdated compared to the far greener batteries that power electric cars, but when it comes to green credentials the ordinary internal combustion engine is not dead yet; engineers and scientists are developing the next generation internal combustion engine which will emit less than half of the greenhouse gasses emitted by current engines.

The problem with current engines is that they are very inefficient: only 25% of the fuel burned is converted into motion; the other 75% is lost as heat. Consequently the obvious way forward is to recover that heat and convert it into motion.

40% of the engine output is wasted in the exhaust, and some of it can be recovered by installing a turbine into the exhaust pipe. The turbine drives an electrical generator and the electrical energy can be stored and used to power the electrical systems on the car. The amount of energy that can be recovered in this manner is relatively high. In a normal family saloon car around 6 kilowatts can be recovered, which is sufficient to cut fuel consumption and emissions by around 15%.

The other major area of energy recovery is the kinetic energy lost in braking, and today?s hybrid cars, which combine an electric motor and internal combustion engine, are already fitted with kinetic energy recovery braking systems which convert recovered kinetic energy into electrical energy. The recovered energy is stored in batteries and used to power the electric motor. However there is an even better way of doing this.

The new system is called a super fly and instead of converting the energy to electricity and to store it in order to drive an electric motor, the super fly eliminates the conversion process and stores the energy as pure kinetic energy.

The Formula One racing team Williams carried out a considerable amount of work on KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) based on this principal, though it wasn?t actually used in racing cars as the electrical conversion process was easier to implement.

Several prototype cars with super fly KERS have now been built and trialled. These have a flywheel that is directly linked to the gearbox. When the driver depresses the brake pedal the flywheel is engaged and the kinetic energy that is used to accelerate it also slows the car down. The flywheel has negligible friction and so continues to rotate until the driver reapplies power. When the driver presses the accelerator, the kinetic energy stored in the flywheel is applied through the gearbox to the cars drive train. The system is completely automatic and needs no additional input from the driver. The system recovers 70% of braking energy, over twice as much as with conventional hybrid cars.

Another way of improving energy efficiency is by replacing the highly inefficient piston cylinder arrangement with one in which the combustion chamber itself expands. The concept is known as the Internally Radiating Impulse Structure or IRIS engine and it could improve fuel efficiencies by as much as 50%. However it has not yet got any further than the drawing board and computer simulations.
