It has been my longstanding belief that there should be no more than one team with each mascot in college basketball. The brightest young minds in the country should have the creativity to come up with interesting and appropriate names for their schools' sports teams. I give Lipscomb credit for coming up with a new name, but minus points for the lack of grammatical knowledge (Bisons?). The SEC is particularly egregious with a set of Tigers and Wildcats. One year there should be tournament between teams of the same name to determine who gets to keep it. Wouldn't you like to see Arizona and Kentucky play for the right to remain Wildcats? What if Villanova upset both of them to keep the name? On Saturday, the two Tier 1 teams named the Huskies faced off with Washington visiting Connecticut
My overall impression of the two teams was not overly hopeful. Things will have to change to see either team in the NCAA tournament. Connecticut did open the season with a nice win over Michigan State, but has not beaten anyone of note since. They lost to New Mexico and North Carolina State. The main problem is the same as the start of the season. The Huskies East have two high usage, 6-0 guards in Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright. This makes for a good situation for fantasy owners as the two players will get their numbers in most games. As such, Napier had 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while Boatright contributed 12 points and three assists. The two combined to shoot 8-of-21 from the field, which is slightly below their combined 45.8 percent. Napier seems to be willing to defer to Boatright and the other UConn players in the first 30 minutes, but the last 10 minutes of the game are Shabazz time.
For the first time in the last few years, Washington doesn't look like it has any NBA-level players. Coach Lorenzo Romar has had a steady stream on drafted players: Terrence Ross, Tony Wroten, Isiah Thomas, Quincy Pondexter, Spencer Hawes, Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson, and even Jon Brockman since 2005. At one point, point guard Abdul Gaddy was a high profile recruit, but he was stuck behind Thomas then Wroten with the Huskies West. He looked like a competent backup point guard at this point after tearing his ACL two year ago. Against UConn's quick guards, Gaddy was unable to penetrate the defense and the UW offense looked ugly. Offenses will tend to do that when they hit less than 30 percent of their shots. C.J. Wilcox had a rough time from the perimeter and scored a season-low five points. He is one of the most consistent scorers in the Pac 12, but just couldn't find any opening versus the Killer Bees.
I thought the Washington bigs would be able to take advantage of Connecticut's relative lack of size, but Desmond Simmons and Aziz N'Diaye combined for six points. Simmons did have 10 rebounds. Perhaps having a slight advantage isn't as the big factor (pun intended) that I have thought. As long as a team has functional and willing low post defenders - which UConn does in Tyler Olander and Enosch Wolf. Other teams, such as Illinois, seem to be doing ok without much offense from their bigs. This may be a trend to watch.

A divided federal appeals court has temporarily barred the U.S. government from requiring an Illinois company to obtain insurance coverage for contraceptives, as mandated under the 2010 healthcare overhaul, after the owners objected on religious grounds.
More than 40 lawsuits are challenging a requirement in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that requires most for-profit companies to offer workers insurance coverage for contraceptive drugs and devices and other birth control methods.
Friday's 2-1 order by a panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago in favor of Cyril and Jane Korte was the second by a federal appeals court to temporarily halt enforcement against people who said it violated their faith, said Edward White, a lawyer for the Roman Catholic couple.
The 7th Circuit suggested that the couple's legal challenge might eventually prevail.
Its order came two days after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor declined to block the provision's enforcement against companies controlled by the family of Oklahoma City billionaire David Green.
The U.S. Department of Justice, which had defended the contraceptives provision, did not immediately respond on Saturday to a request for comment.
The Kortes, who own the construction firm Korte & Luitjohan Contractors, had sought to drop a health insurance plan for 20 non-unionized workers that included coverage for contraception, and substitute a different plan consistent with their faith.
Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com
But the Obama administration's healthcare law did not allow the change, and the Kortes said that violated the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFRA.
In issuing an injunction, the 7th Circuit majority said the Kortes had established a reasonable likelihood of success on the merits of their RFRA claim, and that the government had not yet justified the apparent "substantial burden" on their religious exercise.
The court also said the couple had established irreparable harm, because absent an injunction they would have to choose between maintaining insurance coverage they considered inappropriate or facing substantial financial penalties.

"Business owners who are objecting to the mandate are not objecting to people using contraceptives, but that they have to arrange for and pay for it," White, a lawyer with the American Center for Law and Justice, said in a phone interview. "The federal government shouldn't tell business owners they have to contract to buy what they see as immoral services and goods."
Judges Joel Flaum and Diane Sykes comprised the 7th Circuit majority.
High court declines to block contraceptives coverage in health care law
Judge Ilana Rovner dissented. She said the Kortes were "multiple steps" removed from the contraceptives services because it was their company paying for the coverage, and because it would be a worker, her doctor and the insurer involved in the decisions about the services and their funding.
The Kortes' case is expected to continue in the 7th Circuit.
Neither the 7th Circuit nor Sotomayor ruled on the merits of their respective cases. The legal standard for obtaining an injunction from the Supreme Court is much higher.
The case is Korte et al v. Sebelius, 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 12-3841.

No matter what type of business you run, it is important to ensure that your clients have a pleasant experience every time they see you so that they will be more likely to come back in the future. A simple offering of refreshment with company branded water bottles makes a great impression on your customers and has many benefits that are well worth the time it takes to create your custom labels. Here is a look at the big impact that details such as private labeled water can make for your business.
Your customers have something to take home
When you give customers a bottle of water with a custom branded label, they will have a piece of your branding to take home with them. This will increase the exposure of your logo to each customer who takes a water bottle and also serve as a small offering of a positive customer experience. You might encourage customers to reuse these custom labeled bottles to save plastic, so they will keep making an impression while reducing waste.
You can create a more professional reputation
Everything you put your brand on relates to your customer relationships, and bottled water is something that anyone can take with them. All people drink water, but not everyone is drinking water with your logo on it. When customers see that you have made the effort to reach out with more logo exposure, they may have a higher perception of the professionalism of your business. Plus, the label design is completely customized to your requests, so it will reflect your business in the exact way that you want it to.
If you choose Water Event in Dallas for your customized private label water, you can expect your order to be ready in about two weeks so that you can start branding your business more effectively. Get started on your label design by calling us today at (214) 431-3253 or visiting our website.

FHA mortgage loans are alternatives to conventional financing for your home purchase. The FHA (Federal Housing Administration) helps to make low cost home loans available to thousands of new and current homeowners each year. FHA mortgage loans require minimal down payments and the interest rate is typically slightly lower than prevailing conventional rates.
The FHA currently insures more than 800,000 mortgage loans. This agency has helped originate more than 33 million since it was created in 1934 as part of the New Deal. The FHA does not fund the mortgage loans itself. It does insure the lender that it will not incur any loss if the borrower defaults. In this way, lenders are encouraged to make loans to low and middle income borrowers to whom they would not otherwise extend credit.
Buyers of single family homes can put as little as 3% down when obtaining an FHA mortgage loan. Good credit history is not necessary, although is definitely a ?+.? Income to loan payment, and to total monthly payment, ratio requirements are slightly less stringent than for conventional mortgage loans. The FHA sometimes will also help finance the closing costs. Ask your lender about this. Requirements for this kind of assistance vary widely from locale to locale.
This sounds pretty good, doesn?t it? Well, ?not so fast?? The FHA requires extensive property inspections that cost the seller lots of time and money. Largely because of this, most sellers will not accept an offer if the buyer intends to obtain FHA-insured financing. The acronym ?FHA? unfortunately has acquired bad connotations for many real estate professionals and their clients.
Also, the FHA severely limits how much the lender can charge in fees. The bank cannot lose money because of the FHA insurance. However, it cannot profit as much as when it commits its money to other mortgage loans. Lenders have to be FHA-approved in order to make FHA mortgage loans. Few lenders choose to become FHA-approved.
However, there is a big exception to this circumstance. The FHA serves locales (and, of course, the people who wish to obtain financing for homes in these areas) that would not otherwise be attractive to lenders. Most very large, big city lenders are FHA-approved, and a significant portion of the home loans that they originate are FHA mortgage loans.
If you intend to move into your own home in the country or in an ?upper middle class? suburb, the FHA probably won?t be of use to you. But perhaps you want to live right in a major metropolitan area with all its amenities close by. If so, and if a large down payment is a problem, an FHA mortgage loan could be a great way for you to finance the purchase of your home.

DIYer Adam uses his Nexus 7 for just about everything, including the music and navigation in his car. But unlike phones, tablets?even smaller ones like the Nexus 7?don't mount quite as easily. Here's how he got his tablet up and running in his car.
He wanted to make a mount that didn't replace any of the car's innards (so he could resell it later on), so he ended up using InstaMorph and a few painted lumber connecting straps. He took out the factory stereo and velcroed the mount on the top and bottom before putting it back in, so some disassembly will be necessary. But, the final product looks pretty great, so it's worth the work (and, of course, be sure to use hands-free devices to keep you safe on the road). Hit the link to see the full project.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) ? Compare what was said Wednesday by Robert Griffin III and Mike Shanahan. One sounds like a stereotypical coach. The other could be mistaken for an overeager player.
A case of role reversal hit the Washington Redskins on Wednesday. The rookie quarterback, on the day of his Pro Bowl selection, downplayed Sunday's winner-take-all game against the Dallas Cowboys with one-game-at-a-time-type answers, while the veteran hard-nosed coach was the one whose words could be featured on a banner to promote a game that will decide the NFC East.
"It's the biggest stage, but none of us are looking at it that way," Griffin said. "It's another game we have to go out and win, and that's the way we look at it. Every moment in your life is the biggest one at that time, so we look forward to having many more of these, but we've got to make sure we take care of this one."
Griffin, elected a team captain at midseason, said he'll give his teammates that same even-keel message.
"Basketball, the big game, track, the finals, whatever it is, whenever you play the moment up too much it can become too big to seize the moment," said Griffin, whose big moments include winning a bowl game and the Heisman Trophy while at Baylor. "So you just want to make sure you don't make something so big that you can't grab ahold of it."
After Griffin left the room, along came Shanahan, who is looking to end a personal playoff drought. The coach won two Super Bowls with John Elway and the Denver Broncos in the 1990s but lost make-or-break games in the final weeks of the 2006 and 2008 seasons. He hasn't been to the postseason since 2005.
"These are the games you'll remember for the rest of your life. Win or go home," Shanahan said. "I don't care what playoff game, when I look back as an assistant or as a head coach, you go back and you think about the great experiences you had or the bad memories you have.
"You want to take advantage of these opportunities when they exist. They don't come around every day. And when they do come around, you want to make sure that you play your best and you prepare yourself the best possible way.
"And you tell that guys that this is not just a normal game. You've got to make sure the attention to detail's there. You can't make mistakes. The concentration level's got to be there."
Stay medium? Or get pumped? Think of it like any other game? Or treat it as special?
Or somehow do both?
With all due respect to Griffin ? who has deservedly won praise all season for having poise beyond his years ? the coach probably comes closer to reflecting the attitude in the locker room.
After all, the Redskins haven't been to the playoffs since 2007, and they haven't won a division title since 1999.
"This has only happened to me once before, where if you win that final game, you've got a playoff spot," left guard Kory Lichtensteiger said.
"It's a special feeling, and when you go a lot of seasons in a row without really playing for anything meaningful in December, it's quite a change. ... We're going to be hyped up. I don't think there's any way around that."
The Cowboys-Redskins game has been moved to Sunday night and will mark the end of the regular season. It's possible that Washington (9-6) could lose and still get a wild card berth, but only if the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings both lose earlier in the day.
There was one point on which Shanahan and Griffin agreed: These are the types of games that can make a career.
"At the end of the day, everybody is compared to winning championships, if you like it or not," Shanahan said. "Is it fair all the time? Probably not. But how you're going to be judged or ranked is how you play in those games. They define you, sometimes."
Griffin has already shown he can handle high-profile games, winning his NFL debut, his Monday night debut and his Thanksgiving debut. He ranks either first or second in the league in passer rating, yards-per-attempt and interception percentage.
He said he'll be able to do more physically against the Cowboys after his sprained right knee prompted coaches to limit the game plan in a 27-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Nothing's definite in the league with how you're going to be judged," Griffin said. "But if you play big in the big stages, people tend to write good things about you, so we all want to play well on the big stage."
While Shanahan's words could be used to market the game, Griffin didn't miss a chance to market himself. He was asked about a $10,000 fine, which he is appealing, levied recently by the NFL for wearing attire from his personal sponsor Adidas instead of league sponsor Nike at a postgame news conference.
"I understand the principle of that. And I respect that," Griffin said. "That why I haven't really worn that much Adidas at all."
"Three stripes," he added with a smile, a reference to the Adidas logo. "That's all I can say about that. Name-dropping all up in here."
Griffin got a mention by the NFL later in the day when he, left tackle Trent Williams and linebacker Lorenzo Alexander were the Redskins players selected to the Pro Bowl. All three are first-time selections with distinct stories: the rookie phenom, the athletic lineman who rededicated himself after last year's drug suspension, and the special teams standout finally getting his due.
"You can't play down those kind of things," Griffin said. "I've always said my whole football career that you don't play for awards. They just come. You don't say you're going to win the Heisman. You don't say you're going to win MVP. You go out and you prove it on the field, and if everyone feels that way then they'll give you that award."
Notes: WR Dezmon Briscoe did not practice Wednesday after missing his flight back from the Christmas break. "That'll cost a little cash," Shanahan said. ... RT Tyler Polumbus (concussion) and LB London Fletcher (sprained left ankle) did not practice, while CB DeJon Gomes (sprained left knee) was limited. ... The Redskins' new bubble paid off Wednesday when a winter storm forced the team inside for practice. A year ago, the players would have piled into cars to drive to a gym or an airport hangar.

This underwater pig feast comes in at number 5 in our best videos of 2012 countdown.
Who knew sea lice were so industrious? This time-lapse shows how they quickly devour a dead pig in an experiment probing how bodies decompose underwater. After four days, the carcass is reduced to bones before shrimp sneak in to dine on the cartilage.
The cage prevents large predators like sharks from tucking in. But it doesn't prevent an octopus from trying to access the pig's remains at the end of the clip.
Gail Anderson of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, and colleagues are studying the process to see how seasonal changes and depth can affect decomposition. To find out more about the research, check out the original article, "Sea lice mob devours pig from inside out".

This trip around the sun has been a monumental one for crowdfunding, marked by big projects and astronomical numbers. Take Kickstarter wunderkind OUYA, for example, which raised more than $8.5 million in funding from 63,416 backers. Kickstarter itself has even grown and matured, expanding to the UK and putting its foot down when it comes to pitching hardware by requiring working prototypes and assessments of risks and challenges. Out of the 60 crowdfunding efforts that crossed our desks as Insert Coins in 2012, 47 were successfully funded, four still have time to rake in funds and nine fell short of their goals or were otherwise stymied. We've handpicked and placed the top 10 projects that won our hearts and, on occasion, our hard-earned scratch after the break.

Lifelong Star Wars fan J.J. Abrams will remain just that.
The writer-director-producer, who has pumped blood into the second iteration of the Mission: Impossible series and fully revived Star Trek for the big screen, told Empire magazine that while he met with new series producer Kathleen Kennedy about involvement in Star Wars: Episode VII, he decided against hopping aboard.
VIDEO: Benedict Cumberbatch Looms Over the 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Teaser Trailer
"There were the very early conversations, and I quickly said that, because of my loyalty to Star Trek and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things," he told the magazine. "I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."
Abrams has said that while he grew up as a major Star Wars fan, he was not particularly in love with Star Trek, which made it easier to reboot the saga -- which now stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock -- for the 21st century.
His next Trek movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, is set to hit theaters in June. The first film, released in 2009, took in $385 million worldwide.
As for Star Wars, it has been announced that Toy Story 3 scribe? Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine, will write Episode VII, while Lawrence Kasdan -- who wrote? The Empire Strikes Back -- and Simon Kinberg will write new installments, as well.

Adult onset asthma can present differing Problems from those faced when asthma is contracted in childhood, not the least of these being that the difficulty can be work related and threaten a well established career. It is also much less likely the condition will clear up when the 1st attacks happen in a grown adult. While there is still every probability that the condition can be managed good enough to permit the patient an essentially unexceptional life, only careful management can permit this to occur.
It's not known what the exact cause of asthma is, whether it is contracted in childhood or later on in life. It is clear that environmental components play the biggest part, and this is undeniably true of adult asthma where any genetic factor would've been likely to appear in childhood. Adult asthma is much more certain to be caused by a cumulative effect over many years, either in the work environment or at home. Exposure to dust mites for an extended period may cause respiring difficulties in adults, just as it can greatly increase the risk of asthma in kids. Pollutants in the workplace environment are only now being recognised as the potential danger which they are , and legislation is still not tight enough.
Work related breathing conditions are only now starting to be taken as seriously as they ought to always have been. There's no doubt that working in a factory with materials which are known to make a contribution to asthma and breathing difficulties is going to have a negative accumulative effect. Many modern building materials produce a harmful dust, and while it is almost always feasible to wear protecting facial masks there is no guarantee that when the masks come off in other parts of the building that potential antigens are not still present.
The most evident problem due to adult onset asthma is that somebody may have trained for a certain career for a number of years, and be long established in that career and earning good money in a highly talented job. To expect them to leave that career when they might have no apparent alternative ability is definitely asking a great deal , especially if they've a family to support. Bosses have to do everything they can to reduce exposure to the material which is causing the issue, but even this may not be enough to prevent attacks, and extended periods away from productive work.
The commencement of asthma will be more difficult in an individual already afflicted by health Problems. A ciggie smoker will find the attacks far more harsh as their breathing will be limited and anyway, and quitting smoking becomes more complicated the later in life it is left. It is unquestionably worthwhile to investigate hypnotherapy as a help to quitting smoking, because failing to quit can have pretty serious results for an asthmatic. Obesity will also worsen asthma attacks, and the asthma in turn will make exercising to lose the pounds more threatening.
The right way to approach adult onset asthma is by improving general fitness, but by doing this in a structured and delicate way. Lose pounds by cutting down calories while maintaining the intake of essential nutrient elements, and ensure that the exercise you take is very light. Walking in a natural environment away from traffic and delicate swimming are the best techniques of burning off fat without seriously accelerating the heart rate or worsening the breathing. These types of exercise can be carried out safely even when you're on long-term drugs to stabilize your asthma condition, and they are going to help your body to deal with adult onset asthma.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Like his ancestors, Iraqi-born falcon trainer Abu Badr al-Anazi swings the carcass of a pigeon to attract a falcon released a few hundred meters (yards) away. The bird of prey arcs over the desert outskirts of Dubai before sinking its talons into the lure.
While the methods to develop top-quality hunting falcons date back to antiquity, its transition into a modern Middle Eastern passion has brought in microchip tagging and price tags that can run well over $10,000 for a prime bird.
The falconry season starts in November in the Persian Gulf states when the weather cools. In late afternoon and early mornings, the falconers ? Emiratis, Syrians, Iraqis and others ? drive into the desert outside Dubai in SUVs to train the birds for hunting and racing competitions organizing by the country's sheiks.
Each bird has a microchip inserted beneath its skin and a numbered ring fitted on its leg for identification.
Falconry has been part of the traditional life of the Arabian Peninsula for centuries. Bedouin have practiced it to hunt hare and houbara, a quail-like bird that is among the falcon's main prey in the wild. After the Gulf's oil boom, falconry turned into a more casual sport and hobby.
During the training session, one falconer removes the hood from the bird's eyes while another, in the distance, swings the lure ? a dead pigeon or some meat ? while calling the bird's name. If the bird catches the lure, it's rewarded with some meat. Later, the falconer uses a live pigeon to carry on the training.
This part is important for Islamic hunters as it teaches the falcon not to kill its prey immediately. In order for the hunters to be able to eat the prey in accordance with Muslim beliefs, it must still be alive when its throat is cut and blood is drained. Once properly trained, a falcon will hold a captured houbara without killing it.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A gunman who killed two volunteer firefighters and wounded two others in a Christmas Eve ambush in upstate New York left a typewritten note declaring his plan to burn down his neighborhood and start "killing people," authorities said on Tuesday.
The gunman opened fire on volunteer firefighters who responded to a house fire he deliberately set early on Monday morning in Webster, New York, a suburb of Rochester, authorities said.
The gunman, William Spengler, 62, shot and killed himself in an ensuing gunfight with police. He had spent 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer in 1981, authorities said.
Police said Spengler set the fire, laying a trap for the firefighters, and opened fire when they arrived.
He left a typewritten note describing his intent, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said at a news conference on Tuesday.
"I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down and do what I like doing best, killing people," Pickering read from the gunman's statement.
Pickering said investigators are looking for Spengler's sister Cheryl, 67, who is missing and unaccounted for.
Spengler started shooting at arriving firefighters before they got out of their fire truck, Pickering said. He shot out the truck's windshield as they tried to drive away, he said.
"This was a clear ambush on first responders," Pickering said.
Police fired back at the gunman, he said.
"It was a combat condition. They were shooting at muzzle flash," Pickering said.
Spengler was in a natural depression in an embankment near a tree when he opened fire, he said.
Spengler's motive for attacking firefighters remained unknown, Pickering said. It may have been related to contributions his mother had made to the local fire department, he said.
Pickering said he was not sure what the victims were shot with but said Spengler had an "arsenal of ammunition" and three weapons - a Smith and Wesson .38 revolver, a pump action Mossberg shotgun, and a .223 Bushmaster rifle with a flash suppressor.
Authorities with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were checking on the origin of the weapons, he said.
As a convicted felon, Spengler could not legally own guns, but The New York Times reported there had been recent gun thefts in the county, citing local authorities.
A Bushmaster rifle was used in the killing of 20 students and six teachers in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14.
The firefighters killed in the attack were Lieutenant Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka, authorities said.
The injured firefighters were identified as Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino. Both men were listed in guarded condition on Tuesday at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
An off-duty police officer was wounded by shrapnel as he drove past the scene. The officer was treated at a local hospital and released, the Times said.
Seven homes in the neighborhood were destroyed by the fire, and two were uninhabitable, authorities said.

Indonesia was the hot spot for global real-estate growth in 2012, with Jakarta growing 28.5 percent by the end of the third quarter, according to the Prime Global Cities Index published by Knight Frank property consultancy. Other cities with double-digit growth included Nairobi, London, Miami and Dubai. European cities were the worst performers.
The index, which tracks 26 cities, showed flat or positive growth in 15 cities through September, increasing to 20 cities in just the third quarter alone. That indicates improvement overall in the global market as the year progressed.
The company attributes strengthening demand to economic uncertainty and strong performance in alternative asset classes, along with appeal of these particular cities to luxury property-buyers. The performance of regional economies appears to have little influence on the hottest cities.
Since 2009, the index has improved by 18.7 percent, with Hong Kong, London and Beijing being the strongest performers over the three-year period.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela is looking much better after more than two weeks in hospital, President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday.
Zuma, who visited Mandela on Christmas Day, said in a statement that doctors were happy with the progress the elder statesman was making.
"We found him in good spirits. He was happy to have visitors on this special day and is looking much better. The doctors are happy with the progress that he is making," said Zuma.
The 94-year-old Nobel Peace laureate has been in hospital in Pretoria for more than two weeks after being admitted for routine tests. He then underwent surgery to remove gallstones.
Mandela, who came to power in historic elections in 1994 after decades struggling against apartheid, remains a symbol of resistance to racism and injustice at home and around the world.
He has a history of lung problems dating back to when he contracted tuberculosis while in jail as a political prisoner. But this is his longest stay in hospital since he was released from prison in 1990.
He spent time in a Johannesburg hospital in 2011 with a respiratory condition, and again in February this year because of abdominal pains though he was released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing serious.
Zuma, who has just been re-elected as president of the ruling African National Congress party, last week described Mandela's condition as serious.
"The Mandela family truly appreciates all the support they are receiving from the public. That is what keeps them going at this difficult time," said Zuma.
Periodic statements from the presidency continue to stress that the veteran politician is responding to treatment. No date has been given for his release from hospital.
Mandela spent 27 years in prison, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off Cape Town.
After his release, he used his popularity to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks. This reconciliation is the bedrock of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation".
Sworn in as South Africa's first black president in 1994, Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term in office and has largely been absent from public life for the last decade.
His fragile health has prevented him from making any public appearances in South Africa, though he has continued to receive high-profile domestic and international visitors, including former U.S. president Bill Clinton in July.

Typically, I spend months planning a party. So three weeks ago when I decided to throw a little Christmas party at our house, I quickly got into party mode?there was no time to waste. I wanted a?small, intimate, and fun party for the kids as well as the adults. I had a lot of ideas; but neither of our shipments have arrived in Shanghai yet, so I had to start over?with Christmas decor, craft supplies and party supplies. My work was definitely cut out for me! After some thought, I decided to go with candy cane stripes for the decor and the theme was cookie decorating and letters to Santa for the kids. The adults were easy: hors de oeuvres, spirits and conversation!
We started by eating pizza for dinner, then the kids wrote their letters to Santa. Each letter had an addressed envelope to Santa at the North Pole and pre-paid postage! It was fun reading what the kids want Santa to bring them? Stavros decided while writing his letter to ask for a yellow bike from Santa. What, a yellow bike?! That?s the first time ?Santa? has heard of this, I?m sure? Yikes, not what Santa planned on dropping off for Stavros. After writing the letters, a courier happened to stop by the house to get the letters to Santa over-night (perfect timing)! I set up a craft station for the kids, where they painted, colored, glued and constructed holiday-themed crafts. I wanted the kids to take the lead, so they saw the supplies and did whatever came to mind! I don?t know why, but painting is best when multiple children contribute. I think the crafts were the favorite part of the evening for all the kids. There were big smiles all around.
Once everyone finished?with their crafts, the kids used their photo props I made to take silly photos. The kids had three options: a Santa hat and beard, Rudolph antlers and red nose, or an elf hat and ears! Fun! Next, we began decorating the cookies. The kids all got an apron, chef hat and oven mitt for the activity. I set out all the decorating supplies on the table, and just let the kids take the lead. Stavros, Tammer and I made the cookies earlier that morning, so the cookies were delicious and difficult to resist while decorating. Each kid got a bag to take his/her decorated cookies home to enjoy or save for Santa. Next, we headed to the dining room for some Christmas cake! Whenever there is cake, Stavros insists on candles. So, we all sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and three of the boys blew out the candles together. It was very sweet and very original, all thanks to my three-year-old?s tenacity!
For party favors, the kids got a reindeer water bottle, reindeer candy canes, a reindeer zippered pouch from Starbucks, hand-made Santa lollipops, snowman soup packets, a holiday cookie from H??gen Dazs, a reindeer tree ornament and a snowman or reindeer candy bar. It was a successful party with great company. I loved the intimacy and I look forward to doing it again next year when Stavros will have an even better understanding of Christmas.
