Welcome to the seventy-eighth edition of The Wealth Builder Carnival. The purpose of this carnival is to collect articles from the blogosphere on building, preserving and keeping enough wealth for a comfortable retirement. For reading convenience, the posts are listed with a brief summary or comment by the submitter and organized into seven categories: Earning, Insuring and Protecting, Investing, Living Frugally, Retiring, Saving and Taxes.? Blog Carnival is having technical issues again, which may have reduced the number of submissions for this week.

And now on to the Carnival:

Earning

Theresa Torres presents Summer Opportunities for Students posted at CreditDonkey.com Tips, saying, "The summer months presents many opportunities for students wanting to get ahead. Here are some ways they can take advantage of them."

The convenience of driving to and from work, collecting kids from school and a trip to the mall is a part of everyday life and we tend to forget about car insurance. That is until the time comes for it to be renewed."

Investing

Dr. Dean presents Are You An Investing Scaredy Cat? posted at Dr. Dean's TheMillionaireNurse.com Blog, saying, "Risks and rewards in investing...Do you understand them? What makes people sell when they should buy?"

Taxes

John presents Are Austria & Luxembourg Hurting American Taxpayers? posted at Wallet Blog, saying, "As evidenced by the recession, personal finance and global finance have become increasingly inseparable. The policies of one country ultimately affect the economies of others, and therefore affect the personal finances of the individual citizens of those countries. So why would anyone approve of a policy that supports tax evasion, promotes criminal activity and adds to economic strain?"

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of The Wealth Builder Carnival using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

Hammon to play for Russia again in London Olympics

Hammon to play for Russia again in London Olympics
Becky Hammon to play for Russian women's basketball team in London Olympics
By The Associated Press

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) ' Becky Hammon hopes that the Olympics will be a little less stressful for her.

Hammon will once again play for the Russian women's basketball team at the games this summer in London. She created a stir in 2008 when she first played for Russia in the Beijing Olympics. She helped guide that team to a bronze medal.

"It's old news," Hammon about her decision to play for Russia. "I played with them in the world championship, European championship, hopefully I'll enjoy it a lot more. By far it was one of the best decisions I ever made and I stand by that, and really look forward to doing it again."

When Hammon, who was raised in South Dakota and played to Colorado State, initially decided to play for Russia in 2008 it ignited a media firestorm with people questioning her patriotism, including 2008 U.S. Olympic coach Anne Donovan.

Every time Hammon went on the road with the San Antonio Silver Stars she had reporters waiting to talk to her about her decision to play for Russia.

It got to be a bit much.

"I had reporters from all over the world asking me questions," Hammon said. "Everywhere I went that's all anyone wanted to talk about. It's nice that this time people seem to be focused on other things. It seems almost every team now has one or two players with foreign passports playing for them. It goes back to the whole 'it's Russia'. If it was a country no one heard of, no one really would have cared. That's the society we live in."

Now no one seems to notice anymore.

"It's played through once," Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said. "The reality of it is we've been through it one time already and Becky is an example of what I think a lot of teams that the U.S. will face. There are a lot of players in our league that are now on other teams and going to be part of the Olympic experience."

The 35-year-old point guard plays for a Russian club team during the winter and became a naturalized citizen. Because she hadn't played for the United States in any major FIBA-sanctioned international events, she was allowed to compete for Russia in the Beijing Olympics.

While Hammon is happy that the firestorm seems to have died down this time around, she also is proud that her Russian has improved over the past few years.

"I understand a little bit, it's a lot better than 2008, put it that way," she said laughing.

While Hammon had to miss a few games for the Silver Stars in the past to train with Russia, she won't join the national team until the WNBA takes its month-long break in the middle of July.

"I won't be missing any Silver Stars games and that's important to me," Hammon said.

Hammon is excited to once again march in the opening ceremonies and take part in the games.

"It's the Olympics, it should be fun a great time I think. It will be my first time in London for any length of time," Hammon said. "I'm looking forward to be in London. Get back together with the girls from the team, hopefully make a great run."

One player that Hammon won't be playing with this time around is center Maria Stepanova. The 6-foot-8 star, who has played in the last four Olympics, tore her anterior cruciate ligament at the Euroleague final eight in late March.

"She's been the face of the franchise, so that's a tough loss for us," Hammon said. "There's some young kids that are very talented post players coming up, too. Someone of her caliber you're going to miss, no way around that. But it's also another opportunity for someone else to step up and prove that they belong at the highest level."

She hopes that even without Stepanova, the Russians can make another run at a medal. They are in the same pool as Australia and wouldn't have to face the heavily-favored U.S. team until the elimination rounds.

"At the end of the day it's been a really cool journey and unique journey no one has ever done," she said.

Academic and Creative Writing Journal Vikram Karve: AN ...

A Soldier?s Story?by?Omar N. Bradley

AN INSPIRING AUTOBIOGRAPHY and?A Classic on THE ART OF LEADERSHIP?

I love reading autobiographies, as there is nothing more inspiring and authentic than learning about the life, times, thoughts and views of a great person in his own words.

It?s a lazy hot afternoon. I browse through my bookshelves and pick out A Soldier?s Story by General Omar Nelson Bradley, one of my favourite autobiographies, and certainly my all time favourite military autobiography.?

Come Dear Reader, sit with me for a while, and let?s leaf through and peruse this fascinating book.

General Bradley (1893-1981) known for his calm and resolute leadership and affectionately called the ?Soldier?s General? commanded the largest American combat force in history and rose to be the first Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

This is a story, not of my life, but of a campaign?I have sought... to tell a story of how generals live and work at their chosen profession the author says at the beginning of his memoirs which focus on his participation in World War II.

Candidly written with remarkable humility in beautiful expressive language it is a wonderful memoir embellished with interesting episodes and lucid characterizations of many renowned military personalities.

In the preface General Bradley says: ?In this book I have tried to achieve one purpose: To explain how war is waged on the field from the field command post? To tell a story of how and why we chose to do what we did, no one can ignore the personalities and characteristics of those individuals engaged in making decisions?..Where there are people, there is pride and ambition, prejudice and conflict. In generals, as in all other men, capabilities cannot always obscure weaknesses, nor can talents hide faults?I could not conscientiously expurgate this book to make it more palatable?if this story is to be told, it must be told honestly and candidly??

The author writes in a wonderfully readable storytelling style and starts his riveting narrative on September 2, 1943, driving to Messina along the north coast of Sicily when, suddenly, General Eisenhower summoned him to tell him that he had been selected to command the American Army in the biggest invasion of the war ? the liberation of Europe from the Germans. He then goes back in time and starts his story with vignettes from his early formative days of soldiering.

General Bradley vividly describes how, from General Marshall, he learnt the rudiments of effective command which he himself applied throughout the war: ?When an officer performed as I expected him to, I gave him a free hand. When he hesitated, I tried to help him. And when he failed, I relieved him? - isn?t this leadership lesson valid even on today?s IT driven world where delegation seems to be taking a back- seat and excessive monitoring, interference and intervention seem to be on the rise.

Rather than encourage yes-men, ego-massage, sycophancy and groupthink, General Marshal sought contrary opinions: ?When you carry a paper in here, I want you to give me every reason you can think of why I should not approve it. If, in spite of your objections, my decision is to still go ahead, then I?ll know I?m right?.

When it was suggested to General Marshall that a corps commander who had an arthritic disability in the knee be sent home rather than be given command of a corps in the field in war, he opined: ?I would rather have a man with arthritis in the knee than one with arthritis in the head. Keep him there?.

?For the first time in 32 years as a soldier, I was off to a war? he writes on his assignment overseas in February 1943 to act as Eisenhower?s ?eyes and ears? among American troops on the Tunisian front in North Africa.

He vividly describes the chaos after the American defeat at Kasserine, the arrival of Patton on the scene who growled ?I?m not going to have any goddam spies running around in my headquarters? and appointed Bradley as his deputy, a defining moment which was the first step of Bradley?s illustrious combat career.

This is easily the best book on Patton?s stellar role in World War II, complementing General Patton?s Memoirs War As I Knew It and Patton: Ordeal and Triumph by Ladislas Farago. Though his admiration for Patton is evident, General Bradley writes about his long association with Patton with fairness and honesty and reveals unique and remarkable facets of Patton?s leadership style and character.

Sample this ? Precisely at 7 Patton boomed in to breakfast. His vigour was always infectious, his wit barbed, his conversation a mixture of obscenity and good humour. He was at once stimulating and overbearing. George was a magnificent soldier.?

Can there be a better description of General Patton?

Bradley vividly describes how Patton transformed the slovenly and demoralized II Corps into a fighting fit formation. ?The news of Patton?s coming fell like a bombshell on Djebel Kouif. With sirens shrieking Patton?s arrival, a procession of armoured scout cars and half-tracks wheeled into the dingy square opposite the schoolhouse headquarters of II Corps? In the lead car Patton stood like a charioteer?scowling into the wind and his jaw strained against the web strap of a two-starred steel helmet.?

General Bradley writes superbly, as he describes how Patton stamped his personality upon his men and by his outstanding charismatic leadership rejuvenated the jaded, slovenly, worn-out, defeated and demoralized II Corps and transformed it into a vibrant, disciplined, fighting fit organization that never looked back and went on winning victory after victory in most difficult circumstances and against all odds.

There are bits of delightful humour in this book. Commenting on the ingenuity and improvisation abilities of Patton?s staff, the author writes: ??Indeed had Patton been named an Admiral in the Turkish Navy, his aides could probably dipped into their haversacks and come up with the appropriate badges of rank?? Though, at times, the author appears to be in awe of and enamoured by Patton?s larger than life charisma, he is candid, dispassionate and, at times, critical when he describes how he was bewildered by the contradictions in Patton?s character and concludes: ?At times I felt that Patton, however successful he was as a corps commander, had not yet learned how to command himself.?

Their techniques of command varied with their contrasting personalities. While the soft-spoken unassuming Bradley preferred to lead by suggestion and example, the flamboyant Patton chose to drive his subordinates by bombast and threats, employing imperious mannerisms and profane expletives with startling originality; and both achieved spectacular results.

Many of us are at a loss for words when asked to qualitatively appraise our subordinates. See how easily General Bradley lucidly evaluates his division commanders, bringing out their salient qualities, in so few words with elegant simplicity and succinctness: ??To command a corps of four divisions, toughness alone is not enough. The corps commander must know his division commanders, he must thoroughly understand their problems, respect their judgment, and be tolerant of their limitations?among the division commanders in Tunisia, none excelled the unpredictable Terry Allen in the leadership of troops?but in looking out for his own division, Allen tended to belittle the role of others? Ryder had confirmed his reputation as that of a skilled tactician?his weakness, however, lay in the contentment with which he tolerated mediocrity?the profane and hot-tempered Harmon brought to the corps the rare combination of sound tactical judgment and boldness? none was better balanced nor more cooperative than Manton Eddy?though not timid, neither was he bold; Manton liked to count his steps carefully before he took them.??

Aren?t the author?s understanding, observation and articulation precise and remarkable?

Throughout the book, we find honest, frank and incisive appraisals of characters in this story ? superiors, peers and subordinates ? most of them renowned and famous personalities. He writes with candour about the problems of command during the planning of the invasion of Europe.

From then on the story gathers speed and moves so captivatingly that one is spellbound as one reads the author fluently narrate the events of the campaign with remarkable preciseness and detail, one realizes what an engaging and compelling book this is ? it?s simply unputdownable!

All important events, turning points, and personalities are vividly described with the aid of maps, charts, pictures and appendices; from D Day (the Normandy Invasion) to the surrender of the German forces. Towards the end of his memoirs General Bradley reflects ?Only five years before?as a lieutenant colonel in civilian clothes, I had ridden a bus down Connecticut Avenue to my desk in old Munitions Building? I opened the mapboard and smoothed out the tabs of the 43 US divisions now under my command?stretched across a 640-mile front of the 12th Army Group...I wrote in the new date: D plus 335?outside the sun was climbing in the sky. The war in Europe had ended.?

While this autobiography is a ?must read? for military men and students of military history, I am sure it will benefit management students and professionals for it is an incisive treatise on Soft Skills encompassing aspects of Leadership, Communications, and most importantly, the Art of Human Relations Management in the extremely complex and highly stressful scenario of War where achievement of success (victory) is inescapably paramount. It is a primer, a treasury of distilled wisdom, on all aspects of management, especially human resource management. One can learn many motivational and management lessons from this book.

Nothing can surpass the experience of learning history first hand from a man who lived and created it rather than a historian who merely records it.

The Art of Leadership is better learnt from studying Leaders, their lives, their writings, rather than reading management textbooks pontificating on the subject and giving how-to-do laundry lists.

The Art and Science of Management owe its genesis and evolution to the military.??

Christoph A. Geiseler: Improvisation: Vertical Videos Offer iPad Users a New Experience

Over the last 100 years, motion pictures have been almost exclusively produced in a horizontal aspect ratio for theaters, projectors, televisions and computer screens (e.g. 4:3 and 16:9). Suddenly, smartphones, tablets, rotating monitors and lightweight projectors make it possible for users to watch videos in a vertical format that was never possible on conventional screens in the past (i.e. 3:4 or 9:16 ratio, or "vertical videos"). Vertical videos require filmmakers to improvise with equipment not designed to produce videos in this way.

To explore the aesthetics of the vertical video format, I filmed, edited and produced a vertical video documentary about India called Curry Power. The 10-minute documentary is a musical collage that features tigers, camel polo, holy men, dancers and live music by renowned musicians Pete Lockett and Wasifuddin Dagar. During the Curry Power production process, I did not have access to a tripod for vertical videos or customized video-editing software for post-production. Here are 10 useful insights and tips for filmmakers who want to produce vertical videos.

10 VERTICAL VIDEO INSIGHTS & TIPS

1. Composition

Professional photographers have always used the vertical aspect ratio to capture extraordinary images, which explains why some compositions are better suited for a vertical aspect ratio than a horizontal aspect ratio. Musicians on a stage, runway models, train tracks disappearing into the distance, close-up portraits, skyscrapers and trees beg for a vertical video to capture their inherent beauty: the essence of their form, flow and function is vertical.?

2. Orientation

Visual artists have often experimented with vertical videos in art installations and have enjoyed varying success; vertical projections are nothing new, yet they are remarkably unconventional.

Our eyes are not oriented vertically like a flounder or Cyclops, so it feels unnatural for us to watch moving images that are framed vertically on a screen. Tablets and smartphones are small enough, however, so we can comfortably watch vertical videos without getting migraines. A large, life-size projection of a vertical video stimulates our senses differently than a horizontal video because our orientation to the ground is vertical and humans "come to life" on the vertical screen.

3. Camera Design

Video cameras are not designed to film vertically, unless they are turned sideways or incorporated in a handheld device like a smartphone (which then classifies the device as a phone, not a camera). SLR cameras with high-definition video functionality are great for producing vertical videos; turn the camera sideways and start filming. These cameras enable the user to control the depth of field, F-stop, ISO and shutter speed to maximize the professional quality of a vertical video.

4. Perspective

The vertical video format requires a video-maker to position himself or herself at unconventional or oblique angles from a scene to include more visual information in the foreground and background of the image. Snapping a vertical image before filming a vertical video helps to "storyboard," or plan out a sequence in a visual story, especially at an unscripted or improvised moment.

5. Tripods

Tripods always mount to the bottom of horizontally-oriented cameras, which makes it difficult to use a tripod to produce vertical videos, unless the ball-head of the tripod can tilt 90 degrees. The best solution for keeping a vertical video steady is by using an extra battery pack with a grip for an SLR camera. The battery pack adds enough weight to stabilize an image. It also helps to use a lens with an image stabilizer and tuck elbows in close to the body.

6. Editing

Filming sideways with an SLR camera to produce a vertical video means that the video footage will appear sideways when it is imported and displayed on a computer screen. Sometimes video editing programs do not offer a vertical preview option. When a vertical preview option is available, editing a vertical video on a horizontal screen limits the viewing surface area. The best solution for editing a vertical video is by using an external computer monitor to preview the sideways footage; position the monitor vertically by mounting it on a 1-foot electric guitar stand.

7. Audience

Commercial video production is horizontal because the majority of all content distributors broadcast to conventional, horizontal screens (e.g. network television, cable, YouTube, etc.). With millions of smartphones and tablets in the hands of consumers, the audience for vertical videos is a huge, untapped market.

8. Public Spaces

Even though we read books, posters, signs and advertisements in a vertical format, the majority of producers abide by horizontal conventions when they make their videos. Imagine when every vertical billboard, advertisement or digital page will display vertical videos: endless opportunity.

9. Communication

Communication applications such as Apple's "Facetime" use a vertical video format to give users a personal feeling when they chat in real time. At some point in the future, all digital communication devices will have the capacity to broadcast video content in real time, so a "Facetime" experience will eventually merge with real time vertical video storytelling techniques.

10. New Media

Vertical videos offer new opportunities for filmmakers willing to improvise within the confines of convention. By sharing stories vertically and broadcasting content specifically for devices like the iPad, it will be possible for us to push the boundaries of new media and explore innovative ways of relating to each other when we document the stories of our everyday lives.

University of Miami to Offer Real Estate MBA Program | Commercial ...

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor

In its ongoing effort to expand its educational offerings in the field of commercial real estate, the University of Miami School of Business Administration has launched an accelerated MBA program with a concentration in real estate. The program got off the ground this month.

?This is an example of how we as a business school work to be responsive to the demands of business today,? Anuj Mehrotra, professor and vice dean, Graduate Business Programs at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, told Commercial Property Executive. ?We have set up a number of advisory boards including a Real Estate Programs Advisory Board and in working with these members and others in the real estate community, we saw a need for real estate industry professionals who have the kind of knowledge and skills an MBA program provides.?

Courses include topics ranging from commercial real estate analysis to project management and modeling to real estate law. Additionally, during the 18-month program, students will take part in two internships in the real estate industry and participate in a consulting project with an industry-related non-profit organization.

It?s a joint effort. The business school teamed with the University of Miami School of Architecture to bring the endeavor to fruition, combining their respective expertise in management education and new urbanism. ?The School of Business also has significant strengths in real estate to draw upon, including the university?s well-regarded School of Architecture and close ties to the real estate industry,? Mehrotra said. ?Those relationships enable us to establish the program internships, which will provide the MBA students with real-world, action-learning so that they will be best prepared to succeed in the industry when they graduate.?

The expanded MBA is hardly the School of Business?s first time at the rodeo. It also offers an MBA concentration in real estate, as well as an undergraduate real estate major.

Commencement of the accelerated MBA program is just one of many steps the university?s School of Business ? which falls in the top 20 percent of the country?s best graduate schools, as ranked by U.S. & World Report ? has taken recently to enhance its focus on the real estate sector. In conjunction with the School of Architecture, the business school conducted the University of Miami?s inaugural Real Estate Impact Conference in February, which united more than 300 industry professionals in the discussion of the transformation of urban spaces via global capital and ingenuity.

The new MBA program is a timely pursuit, as national interest in real estate education is strong and growing stronger. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 572 graduate degrees in real estate were conferred by degree-granting institutions in the U.S. in the 2009-2010 academic year. The figure has been on a steady upswing for quite a while, increasing from 434 in the 2005-2006 academic year to 559 in 2008-2009.

(AP) ? Choosing their president freely for the first time, Egyptians are voting on the second day of an election that will produce a successor to longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak.

There were lines outside some polling centers on Thursday, but the morning turnout was generally weaker than the previous day's, when voters lined up outside polling centers before they opened.

Thirteen candidates are contesting the election, including Islamists, liberals and figures from Mubarak's ousted regime. Since none is likely to win outright in this first round on Wednesday and Thursday, the top two finishers will enter a run-off June 16-17. A winner will be announced June 21.

The generals who took control after Mubarak have promised to hand over power by July 1.

The Situation Opens Up About Rehab, Snooki And Sobriety

'I'm not gonna lie, it feels like you're not gonna recover,' the 'Jersey Shore' star tells MTV News in an exclusive post-rehab interview.

The mantra you often hear from people in recovery is "one day at a time." And two months after entering a facility to deal with a prescription-medication addiction, "Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino knows exactly what that means.

"Ever since I've been out, I'm not gonna lie ... it's not easy," Sorrentino told MTV News' Sway in an exclusive interview in which the "Shore" star talks about his struggle to get sober and his attempts to make amends with his "Shore" roomies, especially soon-to-be-mom Snooki. "But at the same time, where I'm at right now, I'm at a good place. But it took a little bit to get there. In the beginning? A lot of rainy days, so to speak. A lot of rainy days."

In the candid interview, Sorrentino opened up about how he got hooked on prescription pills while denying rumors that any illicit substances were involved. With a renewed, more focused sparkle in his eye, the drama king "Shore" viewers loved to hate in recent seasons said he could barely recognize the man he'd become under the grip of addiction as he recounted the struggle of his first days in rehab.

Watch our entire, exclusive interview with Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino.

"Your first day is detox," he said of the program he attended. "It's not a pleasurable experience at all. ... In the beginning, for sure, when I was [at the facility] in Utah, I'd wake up and just be extremely disappointed with myself. Like, 'I can't believe I got here. How did I get here?' " Mike said he worried about how his addiction would impact his family, his health and his mind, and at one point, he wondered if he'd end up another tragic Hollywood headline if he pushed things too far.

The hardest part for him, he said, was the headlong rush of emotions he felt once he began to come out of his drug fog, a torrent of feelings he'd been blocking that nearly overwhelmed him. "I'm not gonna lie, it feels like you're not gonna recover," he said about that emotional roller coaster. "It feels like an impossible deed ... [but] day-by-day it gets better."

Now that the "old Mike" is back, Sorrentino said he's gotten supportive emails from much of his "Shore" TV family over the past two months, but the one relationship he still needs to repair is his once-close bond with Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi.

"She had my back and I had her back too," he said of the formerly tight duo. "We were close for a long time. ... I am going to say that I am upset that we're not as close as we are today. I care about the girl, for sure."

Mike said Snooki did tell him she was worried about him and asked if he was OK during the throes of his addiction, questions he brushed off at the time. When asked by Sway if there was anything he'd done that he'd want to apologize to Snooki for, Sorrentino was quick to answer.

"Hurting her feelings," he said. "I would never want to hurt that girl's feelings. That girl is very special to me. If I could turn back the clock, which I always say that I have no regrets ... definitely hurting her feelings ... and our friendship."

Help Your Home By Following These Great Home Improvement Tips ...

Help Your Home By Following These Great Home Improvement Tips

There are few, if any, homeowners who have never tackled home improvement. However, there are many places where a project can go wrong, especially for a novice homeowner. Read the following useful tips on planning a home improvement project that will be a success.

When you are planning home improvement projects, it can be useful to look around for some inspiration. Go to the local book store or library to browse books and magazines on decorating. Visit paint and carpet stores and pick up color samples and fabric swatches. Spend the time finding out what you really like, so you are prepared for the project when it is time to start the work.

If your room is small, or the ceilings are low to the ground, give them the illusion of space. Flood the room with light. Paint the walls a nice, bright color the grabs the eye. The trick to making the ceiling appear higher is to locate the drapes, valance, and curtain rod closer to the ceiling.

You can provide better security and improve your home?s exterior by having motion detecting lights installed. Motion detector lights turn on automatically when an intruder approaches, providing you with the element of surprise and saving you money on electricity! Intruders will be mindful of this when coming to your house, because they know that you?ll be aware of them if the lights turn on.

It is important to work on your home?s exterior appearance. Keep your yard nice by mowing the lawn and doing the edging. Plant some shrubs and make sure they are well placed. Clear your front walkway of leaves and debris. Power wash your roof and exterior walls. Thoroughly clean your windows. These acts leave your visitors with a good first impression.

If there are some cracks in the roof, buy a roll of tape made of aluminum. Place the sticky part of the tape on a surface that is clear of debris. The seal it creates will be waterproof.

Make the entryway to your home useful and attractive by adding essential items. Try a bench to sit on to take shoes off, coat rack, a mirror, and perhaps a basket or tray for keys. This not only adds some aesthetic appeal to the area, but it also helps to make your home functional.

If you are working on your home yourself, make sure to purchase high quality tools and supplies. It might be more expensive in the beginning, but it will save you money for years. Products that are high-quality generally last longer. Even though some quality tools can be a bit expensive, they save you a lot of money in the long run.

When planning to do home improvement work on your house, a good homeowner will spend his money on high class materials and fixtures as opposed to buying pricey decor and furnishings. There?s a clear, solid reason to do this. Furnishings and other decorations don?t add to the home?s value because homeowners take them with them when they leave the home. Attractive and durable fixtures remain in the house and add quite a bit to the home?s resale value.

Having information on home improvement is your buffer between the scary unknown and the vision you have for your home. Just think of all of the benefits it has and all of the expenses it can take care of, along with all of the money it can save you in the long run.

World's Strangest Beaches - Articles | Travel + Leisure

Getting to Hawaii?s Papakolea Beach isn?t easy?travelers must endure a hot, rugged nearly three-mile hike along sea cliffs to reach it. Yet people make the trek every day. Why? Papakolea?s sand isn?t golden or white?or even black. It?s a deep olive green.

Most of us would relish a day at any old beach. But there?s a certain thrill in sinking your toes into sand at a different kind of shore?one, like Papakolea, that looks so fantastical it could be straight out of a movie.

To say that Americans love beaches is an understatement. Approximately 85 percent of us visit a beach on vacation, according to Stephen P. Leatherman, Ph.D., a.k.a Dr. Beach, director of Florida International University?s Laboratory for Coastal Research. ?There?s nothing like them,? says Leatherman. ?You?ve got sand, water, and waves, plus cool, fresh air. Plus there?s the nostalgia factor: everyone loved sand as a kid.?

Quirky beaches just add another layer to the enjoyment. And the fact that only Mother Nature created these strange beaches is perhaps what?s most astounding. No human hands were involved?just the perfect geologic storms of air, water, temperature, and pressure.

Our 50th state is rife with such occurrences. ?We have black, black and green, black and red, green, and gray sand beaches in Hawaii,? says Ken Hon, Ph.D., assistant professor of geology at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. ?The colored beaches are almost all related to recent volcanic activity, except the white beaches, which are tied to coral reef erosion.?

Halfway around the world, years of erosion unearthed immense rounded stones along Cape Town?s coast. Today, Boulders Beach is a beloved spot to swim, sunbathe, and spot African penguins in the shadows of the giant rocks.

Even postcard-perfect white-sand beaches have their quirks. In his ratings of 650 United States beaches, Dr. Leatherman ranked Siesta Beach, in Sarasota, FL, as number one. It?s not visibly that different from other pristine shores, but its sand is made up of 99.9 percent quartz crystals. It never heats up and is so pure that it squeaks like powdered sugar when you walk on it.

Intrigued yet? Read on for even more strange beaches you?ve got to see to believe.

Facebook IPO Could Smash Records, Spur New Tech Wave

MTV News takes you behind the scenes of Facebook in a 2011 documentary that explores the company's unique non-corporate culture.
By Gil Kaufman

Mark Zuckerberg

It's the biggest initial public offering since the late-1990's heyday of Internet 1.0. Hell, it's the biggest tech IPO ever. Everyone wants to get in on the long-awaited Facebook IPO, which is offering up more than 484 million shares that are expected to raise nearly $18.5 billion for the world's most popular social networking site.

By the time all is said and done, the bright idea hatched by co-founder Mark Zuckerberg in his college dorm room could turn his company into a $100 billion behemoth. Since launching as a campus-only network in 2004, the site has allowed more than 900 million users around the world to connect, post pictures and stories and keep circles of friends appraised on every move they make while fundamentally altering the way we spend our time, communicate and share our private lives.

When MTV News visited the company's Palo Alto, California, headquarters in 2011 for "Diary of Facebook,", we took viewers inside the matrix to find out how its young employees keep the engine running and what fuels their passion.

Among the revelations in the piece was an exploration of the unique FB phenomenon known "hack-a-thons," during which Zuckerberg said some of the site's best ideas are generated.

"Hack-a-thons are this awesome part of our culture," Zuckerberg said of the 24-hour marathons of coding and brainstorming. "Every month or two, everyone stays up all night just experimenting with things and building things quickly. And the only rule is that you're not allowed to work on the same thing that your day job is."

It's that kind of irreverence and corporate rule-ditching energy — those who can't code join in by cooking, juggling or drawing to stay energized — that has pushed the Facebook IPO from a financial and tech story to a metaphor for our entrepreneurial times.

With the college job market for new grads looking the best it has since the start of the recession in 2007 and tech start-ups blossoming like it's 1998 all over again, the Los Angeles Times wrote that the Facebook heat could help spark a renaissance of Internet heat. "Wealth has trickled down to employees and investors who cashed in their shares ahead of the IPO on private exchanges", the paper reported. "Others are spending in advance of their big payday, fueling an economy that's already humming thanks to the Bay Area's thriving technology sector."

Facebook's stock offering could mint dozens, if not hundreds of new millionaires. And it's a fair bet that those suddenly-flush geeks could go on to form new companies that will be on the lookout for fresh young faces (and minds) to help them, yes, become the next Facebook. So, get your résumé updated, you could be up next.

Samsung mass-produces 4-gigabit LPDDR2 memory, aims to make 2GB a common sight in smartphones

Image

Samsung started making 2GB low-power mobile memory last year, but as the 1GB-equipped phone you likely have in your hand shows, the chips weren't built on a wide-enough scale to get much use. The Korean company is hoping to fix that now that it's mass-producing 20-nanometer, 4-gigabit LPDDR2 RAM. Going to a smaller process than the 30-nanometer chips of old will not just slim the memory down by a fifth, helping your smartphone stay skinny: it should help 2GB of RAM become the "mainstream product" by the end of 2013, if Samsung gets its way. New chips should run at 1,066Mbps without chewing up any more power than the earlier parts, too, so there's no penalty for using the denser parts. It's hard to say whether or not the 20nm design is what's leading to the 2GB of RAM in the Japanese Galaxy S III; we just know that the upgraded NTT DoCoMo phone is now just the start of a rapidly approaching trend for smartphones and tablets.

Hey there ladies and gents, I am a co-founder here at fullyloadedgaming.com. I have a passion for gaming just like everyone that visits the site. The genres I enjoy most are JRPG, FPS, and Action/Adventure games. I would have to say that SOCOM: US Navy Seals really sparked an interest in me in terms of the competitive aspect of gaming. I am a very competitive gamer when it comes to the FPS genre. When I do not feel like elevating my blood pressure due to frustration I relax and play some JRPG's and Action Adventure games.

Ive been interested for years in these things but it just seems to me that the programs that I try to learn dont explain why or how things work especially in computer programming? Or the language is so complex that it goes right over my head? I also seem to notice that when it comes to formulas I have trouble remembering the steps and remembering which formula to apply to get something done/solved? (I have a incredible hard time with math and science that involves showing work, in my head I can usually do this just fine, but my teachers think I cheat)This at times leaves me very frustrated?
Oh and are there girl programmers(yes I'm a girl) out there? I seem to be the only girl that I know in real life that likes computers and the other nerdy like men either want sex from me in return for there "kindness(teaching me)" or think I'm too stupid to learn(there the bitter type)....HELP, any ideas?

Despite all the question marks I don't believe you ever asked an actual question besides whether or not there are other female programmers.

So... What is your question?

Women are well represented in the software business.

And that goes back a long way. Look up the career of Admiral (USN) Grace Hopper who invented the programming language COBOL.
