Honours and medals from Queens and Kings may be an alien concept in Silicon Valley, but they are a delightfully steam-punk tradition, still continued in a Britain which long ago said goodbye to its Empire, yet still has Knights and ?Commander? orders to hand out. Thus, Apple?s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, has been knighted in the Queen?s New Year?s honours list, principally for his work in industrial design and championing British talent abroad. Ive was already made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2006. Being a Knight means he is now Sir Jonathan Ive ? a moniker which should, at the very least, bump him to the front of the average restaurant queue when he?s in London.

The British Consul General in San Francisco, Priya Guha, said that Mr Ive ?epitomises the strengths of British design and innovation?. In response Ive said: ?I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making. To be recognized with this honour is absolutely thrilling and I am both humbled and sincerely grateful.?

The former north-east Londoner is known as the mastermind behind Apple?s hardware, from the iPod the iPhone to the Macbook Air. A graduate of design at Newcastle Polytechnic he moved to California to join Apple in 1992 and led Apple?s design team since 1996. He holds 596 design and utility patents, more than Steve Jobs did, who reached 317.

But New Year?s honours are often political in nature. The Queen is not the one who draws up the initial list but the ?Nominations Team of the Honours and Appointments Secretariat? ? basically a mix on Number 10 and Buckingham Palace officials. The list is then heavily gone over, mainly by Number 10, the office of the Prime Minister.

New Year?s Honours are frequently used to make political points. Steve Jobs was once rumoured to be in line for a knighthood under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, but the story goes that he was refused because he wouldn?t turn up to make a speech in the UK. This sounds like Steve Jobs.

But it?s clear that 2011 was a year which the UK government trumpeted the rise of tech startups and entrepreneurs in its official ?Tech City? policy and its economic stance, particular it?s recent Autumn economic statement which is poised to kick-start the Angel investment market in the UK.

So what better signal to send than to laud one of the architects of Apple?s success as a global tech powerhouse?

UPDATE: It?s worth noting that Tom Harvey, who is an investor who has funded early stage tech in England?s North East has been made a CBE (Commander of the British Empire).

COHOES ? The oaths of office taken by the re-elected city of Cohoes officials were the main focus of many people on Friday, but it was a 2 ? -year-old who stole the show at City Hall.

As 6th Ward Alderman Ralph Signoracci IV took his oath before a judge, his family, and the dozens of area residents and officials who packed the second floor meeting room, Signoracci?s son, Raffaele, decided to join his father by raising one of his hands and then waving to the judge and the amused crowd.

The emcee of the event, state Assembly Majority Leader Ron Canestrari, D-Cohoes, had pointed out earlier that Signoracci was starting his second term in elected office that other Signoraccis had also filled in years past. Mayor John McDonald, who was the last to be sworn in among the group of county legislators and city officials, observed, ?[Ralph?s son] is already campaigning.?

At the year-end event, McDonald also said that this was the first time in his tenure that there was a repeating Council of the same elected officials. They include April Kennedy, starting her third term in the 1st Ward; Fred Turcotte, starting his second term in the 2nd Ward; George Primeau, starting his 4th term in the 3rd Ward; Dianne Nolin, starting her second term in the 4th Ward; Roger Ceccucci, starting his 2nd term in the 5th Ward; and Signoracci in the 6th Ward. The mayor is starting his 4th term.

McDonald said that the dialogue the council maintains is what the job and serving the public is all about. ?We?re not always agreeing but we are getting the job done and that is the most important thing.?

Compared with when he started as mayor more than a decade ago, he felt the city was in much better shape though the last four years, due to the recession, have been difficult. In the future, he plans to further expand the residential population and increase commercial development.

?We?re changing the picture of Cohoes,? he said.

The re-elected mayor acknowledged his own three children as inspirations for his job and said he has received their honest feedback on matters on a few occasions.

?They?re what keep you going,? he said. Continued...

Kodak P570 Personal Photo Scanner

One step up in size from the Kodak P460 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99, 4 stars) that I reviewed a few months ago, the Kodak P570 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99 direct), is aimed at the same consumer-level, casual photographers who need to scan photos. Like its sibling, it makes almost all of the setting decisions for you automatically, so you can scan without having to learn anything about those settings. Serious photographers probably won't like the lack of control, but the casual photographers it is meant for will appreciate how easy it is to use.

The two key differences between the P570 and its smaller sibling are that it can't scan strips of film or slides, but it can scan to a larger size, at a maximum 5 by 7 inches instead of 4 by 6. Beyond that it's basically the same scanner with all the same features.

Setup and Scanning
The P570 measures just 1.8 by 7.6 by 3.3 inches (HWD), which makes it bigger than the P460, but by only a little. The 5-inch wide manual feed slot in the front feeds straight through to an exit in the back, where you'll also find the power connector and a mini-USB connector. Also on the front is a memory-card slot. Setup is trivial. Simply plug in the supplied 2GB memory card, and connect the power cable.

To scan, you turn the scanner on, put a photo in one of the supplied protective sleeves, and insert the photo into the front input slot. The scanner will detect it, grab it, feed it, and scan the photo to a JPG file. The only setting you can control is resolution, with a button that switches between 300 pixels per inch (ppi) and 600 ppi.

After you've scanned to the memory card, you can move the files to your computer. Connect the scanner with the supplied USB cable, and the computer will recognize it as a USB drive, so you can copy the files. You can also scan directly to your computer instead of a memory card thanks to a utility that comes with the P570.

The only other software it comes with is Kodak EasyShare, which is basically a photo album program that also has commands to print, send to email, and send to Kodak's Creative Center. The Creative Center lets you turn your photos into photo books, photo mugs, and other products that you can order online, as well as turn them into greeting cards and other items you can print yourself.

One potential issue is the lack of a photo editor. However, you can't really take advantage of a photo editor without spending time learning how to use it, so that's consistent with the emphasis on ease of use. The assumption is that you can use the tools in your operating system, like the Windows ability to manage, print, and, to some minor extent, edit photos.

Scan Speed
The speed for manual feed scanners can be misleading, because it doesn't include the time you spend preparing each original or carefully feeding it so it will go in straight. With the P570, however, you really can scan almost as fast as the scanner can go.

The P570 manages this trick by coming with two protective sleeves and by taking long enough to scan so you can start a scan, remove the photo from the other sleeve, put it away, insert a new photo in the sleeve, and have it ready to go when the current scan finishes. The only extra time will be the few seconds you need to insert the next photo into the feed slot.

I timed the scanner, at a consistent 15 to 17 seconds at 600 ppi, and 14 to 15 seconds at 300 ppi, for scanning 4-by-6 inch photos to the memory card. Scanning to a computer took only a second or two longer at 300 ppi, but almost twice as long at 600 ppi.

In comparison, the P460 and the almost identical Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 ($109.99 direct, 4 stars), which both use a smaller sleeve because of their 4-by-6 maximum scan size, took 10 seconds with the same photos at 300 ppi. The key point, though, is that except when scanning to a computer at 600 ppi, the P570's times are fast enough so you're not likely to get impatient waiting for it to finish.

Scan Quality
Scan quality, unfortunately, is not a strong point, with a loss of resolution that comes out looking like soft focus if you reprint the scans and a loss of both shadow detail (detail based on shading in dark areas) and detail based on shading in bright areas. However, the quality is good enough for casual photographers who just want to get their snapshots into digital format and don't mind losing some quality in the process.

If you need better image quality, you should be looking at flatbed scanners, like the Editors' Choice Epson Perfection V300 Photo ($99.99 direct, 4 stars), instead of a sheet fed scanner. The process of scanning will necessarily be more cumbersome with a flatbed, and you may have to learn more about scan settings, but the quality will be better. On the other hand, if you're just looking for snapshot quality, want an easy way to scan your storehouse of photos, and have at least some that are as large as 5 by 7 inches, the Kodak P570 Personal Photo Scanner can certainly do the job. It may even be your preferred choice.

America's best new airport restaurants

Scott Finsthwait

At San Francisco International Airport, Cat Cora restaurant overlooks the runway and the Bay Area hills behind it.

?

By Nick Fauchald & Chelsea Morse , Food & Wine

I'm cutting into a $40 steak with a four-cent plastic knife. The knife isn't even painted silver to offer an illusion of metallurgy; it's as white as paper and just as sharp. The steak ? deeply charred, oozing pink juice and smelling of iron and earth ? patiently mocks me as I massacre it with my contemptible tool.

Slideshow: See a slew of fine airport dining spots around the country

I'm in Terminal 5 at New York City's Kennedy airport, the first of four stops I'll be making on a coast-to-coast tour of America's best new airport restaurants. As the in-flight meal goes the way of the go-go-booted stewardess, airports are filling the void with dining options that are considerably more ambitious than the usual eat-and-run-to-the-gate fast-food and snack spots. It's about time: As ballparks, music festivals and street carts have haute-ified their food in recent years, American airports have been stuck in a rut of cellophaned sandwiches and restaurants with names ending in "Xpress." (Everyone's in such a hurry, these places seem to say, that there's no time even to spell out the names.)

The recent boom in serious airport food is great news for early birds like myself, who must be at the gate at least an hour before departure ? lest the airline decide, for the first time ever, to run ahead of schedule. On my four-airport restaurant marathon, I plan to arrive for each flight a few hours early to mimic the experience of a long, agonizing delay. But the simulation won't be necessary; Murphy's Law will grant me more than enough time to eat well.

New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport

When it opened in 2008, JFK's Terminal 5 became the undisputed leader of this new era of preflight pampering. All of its restaurants are run by OTG Management, an "airport food and beverage operator" with projects in eight airports across the country (including my final stop, New York City's LaGuardia) and many more on the way (up next is Minneapolis?St. Paul). There's the loungey sushi bar (Deep.Blue), the high-end steak house (5IVESTEAK), the Spanish taper?a (Piquillo), the modern-Italian trattoria (Aero Nuova) and the petit Parisian brasserie (La Vie), each with a menu designed in consultation with a talented local chef.

With its vaulted, tiled ceiling, Piquillo looks like the inside of some modernist wine cellar, an ideal hiding spot for waiting out a delay. I sit at the bar and order a sampling of tapas and Spanish sandwiches that evoke the food that chef Alex Raij cooks at her two excellent Manhattan restaurants, El Quinto Pino and Txikito. My meal includes creamy croquetas and a flight-friendly bocadillo of serrano ham on a tomato-rubbed baguette; less portable but equally delicious is a fried-calamari sandwich with spicy mayonnaise.

I gave up on finding a decent glass of wine in an airport years ago, but the Terminal 5 restaurants share a cellar some 300 bottles deep. However, even a 1999 P?trus ($2,400 at 5IVESTEAK) wouldn't have made it any less frustrating to try cutting my dry-aged, bone-in rib eye with a plastic knife. I have a much easier time with 5IVESTEAK's excellent hamburger, which is made from a blend of short rib, brisket and chuck from status butcher Pat LaFrieda and arrives cooked as ordered: medium-rare! In an airport! (Note to travelers: You can't dine in Terminal 5 unless you possess a JetBlue ticket or a TSA badge. It took a credentialed ? and patient ? escort to get me through security.)

I leave Terminal 5 to catch my plane to San Francisco in Terminal 2. There, I have just enough time to grab provisions for my flight from two of the terminal's sleek new kiosks. Both are set among a sea of iPad-equipped tables from which you can order food and play games (or, if you're me, check flight delays and turbulence reports). The first, Croque Madame, offers an anytime menu of fast French food ? cr?pes, quiches, sandwiches and salads ? from chef Andrew Carmellini (a Food & Wine Best New Chef 2000). I order the namesake sandwich to go and hustle over to Bar Brace (pronounced BRA-chay) for a few very good bruschette and a roasted-beet salad, both recognizably from consulting chef Jason Denton's Lower East Side restaurant, 'Inoteca, and an artichoke-and-fennel panino on par with those he serves at his West Village spot, 'Ino.

I scold myself for not allowing enough time to try more from each restaurant, especially a drink from Croque Madame's promising cocktail menu. But the gods of the sky decide to help me out: Two hours later, after an undiagnosed electrical problem and a long, hot wait in runway purgatory, I'm back at Croque Madame nursing a nerve-restoring drink called the Avant (gin and tonic with lemon, muddled grapes and basil) and my equally cold (but still tasty) sandwich. Soon, a gate attendant announces that mechanics were "unable to locate the problem" on my plane, "so we're going to give this thing another try." I order another drink.

San Francisco International Airport

When I reach the San Francisco airport for my departing flight the next day, I pass a TSA-looking guy yelling something about mops and buckets into his phone as I head into the terminal. Inside, there's ankle-deep water and chaos everywhere. A construction crew has broken a pipe, and the security-line equipment has gone dark. Anticipating another day of waiting, eating and more waiting, I walk over to Terminal 2, which opened in April and houses the airport's best food spots.

The Napa Farms Market looks like a miniature Ferry Building (indeed, both share the same architects) and, again like the Ferry Building, it sells many of the Bay Area's best local products. Acme Bread and Cowgirl Creamery share a counter next to the barista-staffed Equator Coffees & Teas, a local roaster. The Market also houses a Vino Volo wine bar and bottle shop; travelers can taste through a flight of Napa Cabernet before grabbing bottles from the California-heavy shelves to take home as souvenirs. A salesperson tells me I'm allowed to bring aboard "as many bottles as you can carry." I push this policy to the extreme.

In the back of the Market are two takeout counters. Tyler Florence's Rotisserie, an outpost of his Napa restaurant, serves fat, fluffy waffles at breakfast and rotisserie chicken with market-driven sides for lunch and dinner. There are a couple of high tables in the Market, but this is very much a grab-and-go spot, which is too bad, as my juicy, crisp-skinned chicken is worthy of a slow, time-wasting meal with a glass of wine. Next to Rotisserie is Live Fire Pizza, where I attack a lox-and-cream-cheese pie, its crackery crust tossed and baked to order ? a welcome departure from the precooked slices one typically finds in an airport food court.

At the end of the terminal, I sit at the counter of Cat Cora, which overlooks the runway and the Bay Area hills behind it, providing a more serene dining setting. The restaurant is a good place for fresh seafood, which becomes extremely apparent when the lobster sitting in an ice-packed case in front of me waves his claw. "He just got here," says the chef behind the counter, dispelling what I thought might be a jet-lagged hallucination. "He'll be lobster mac and cheese soon." I'm tempted, but ultimately I order a half-dozen oysters and a Farmer's Market Bloody Mary (made with fresh tomato juice and basil) instead.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

I love the Atlanta airport. The concourses are lined up in a row, A through E, connected via a long underground tunnel. It's impossible to get lost here.

My destination is Concourse E, where the sleek One Flew South resides. Hidden from the bustle behind a slatted wooden wall, its interior is dominated by a calming photomural of a Georgia pine forest.

One Flew South is actually two restaurants, with two different menus, run by chefs who are much more involved in day-to-day operations than their consulting peers. There's a long marble sushi bar from which chef Allen Suh serves pristine nigiri and familiar maki rolls. The other menu, from chef Duane Nutter, pulls flavors from Japan and fuses them with Southern dishes. I start with a fragrant bowl of chicken noodle soup: The chicken is from nearby Ashland Farm, the noodles are soba and the broth is scented with five-spice powder. A sandwich comprised of smoky Benton's bacon, tomatoey tomatoes and crisp fris?e on crusty ciabatta is the best BLT I've had in years. Given the constraints of airport restaurant cookery (tiny kitchens, endless security checks, chef knives tethered to their stations with chains), the quality of the food is nothing less than remarkable.

One Flew South's bar alone is worth the trip to the concourse. In addition to cult whiskeys like Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve, it serves about 30 by-the-glass pours and as many sub-$50 bottles, and the cocktail menu is anchored by properly mixed classics. As I sip a bourbon, I can't imagine a better place to wait out a delay. (Did I mention my flight was delayed again?)

New York City's LaGuardia Airport

LaGuardia is quickly catching up to JFK, its Queens sibling, with a growing roster of restaurants spun off from local favorites. I have extra time to plan my final stretch of eating as I sit on the runway in ? Baltimore. That's right: LaGuardia's infamous Friday afternoon traffic has brought our plane to Maryland to wait its turn to land.

When we finally deplane in Terminal D, I pass another outpost of Bar Brace on my way to Bisoux, where consulting chefs Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr have recast the menu from their Manhattan restaurant, Balthazar. This airport iteration looks nothing like the gilded Soho brasserie, but it still serves a respectable onion soup and steak frites. Nearby, there are signs for the upcoming Crust from pizza guru Jim Lahey; Minnow, a seafood restaurant from Andrew Carmellini, is also in the works.

Whereas JFK's restaurants are optimal for sit-down meals, LaGuardia's excel at elevated food-court eating. Tagliare serves Sicilian and thin-crust pizzas under the direction of Dominick DeMarco Jr. whose father runs Brooklyn's iconic slice joint Di Fara. I order a fat slice of baby-artichoke pie and walk to the next counter, Custom Burgers by Pat LaFrieda. Here, beef from LaFrieda (who else?) is packed into craggy patties ordered via touch screen. As the name implies, Custom Burgers lets you tweak your order to the limits of your imagination; I get mine Southern-style with fried pickles and barbecue sauce, and I make sure to get crinkle-cut fries and a velvety chocolate shake for good measure. I find a table away from the rabble of Friday travelers and lay out my spread. I eat slowly and deliberately. After all, I've got no more flights ahead of me and all the time in the world.

After four days and several times as many meals, I have come to a conclusion: Airport dining has improved enormously over what it was just a few years ago ? and it's only going to get better. Grab-and-go standards like burgers and pizza are now on par with the best of their non-airport counterparts, and I found a proper cocktail or glass of wine at every hub. But until someone invents a silent intercom system ? or a plastic knife that cuts $40 steaks ? a true I'm-not-in-an-airport eating experience will still be elusive (though Atlanta's One Flew South comes pretty close). This is OK, though: I would miss a lot of flights if it weren't.

Column: Heat draining suspense out of young season (AP)

That deflating sound you hear is the suspense beginning to leak out of the NBA season.

Yes, it's only a few days old, but a fifth of the schedule has already been erased by the lockout and if Miami figures out how to attack zone defenses, it's over. No team is going to beat the Heat then. In the opener they blew out a Dallas team that came back to steal the finals by gumming up Miami's offensive machine with a zone. On Tuesday night, they outlasted a Boston team that deployed the same defense in the second half to avoid getting run out of the gym. Though the Celtics clawed back within three points at the 2-minute mark, in the eight quarters the Heat have played, they've trailed for only 14 seconds. Get used to it.

Miami has already fixed the problems that were so apparent when LeBron James and his super sidekicks, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, made their debut together against Boston to kick off the 2010 season. They can play sustained, ferocious defense and they're even more opportunistic ? and spectacular ? than they were in transition by the end of last season. Even so, Miami coach Eric Spoelstra used some of his free time during the lockout to pick the brains of some of the country's best coaches ? Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Kentucky's John Calipari and Oregon football coach Chip Kelly, who runs a particularly hectic version of the no-huddle spread offense ? looking for ways to rev up Miami's attack. The lessons appear to have taken. The faster pace and extra space on the floor means more room for James, Wade and Bosh to take advantage of individual matchups, which plays into Miami's strength.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers didn't need to consult the scoreboard at halftime to convince him of that. He watched the finals, saw how well a zone worked for the Mavericks, and despite a commitment to man-to-man defense from the outset of his NBA career, began working on the scheme over the summer. Boston unveiled its version in the third quarter, while the Heat stood around and settled for jumpers, and the Celtics slowly climbed back into the game. An 18-6 run over the final 6 minutes of the period ? Miami helpfully misfired on its last eight shots ? brought the Celtics to 91-83. That margin seemed comfortable enough, though, until former Heat guard Keyon Dooling scored seven straight points to cut it to 108-105 with 2:02 left.

In Wade and James, the Heat have two of the best finishers in the game, but they still haven't sorted out the question of who is going to finish which game, especially when they're facing a zone. They still hadn't when crunch time came against Boston ? the duo combined for just seven points on 3-of-8 shooting in the fourth quarter Tuesday night ? but might have come up with an alternative. That would be rookie point guard Norris Cole, who had his hands filled most of the night trying to slow down his opposite, Boston's Rajon Rondo, but found his shooting touch from the perimeter when the Heat needed him most. In quick succession, James and Wade played supporting roles to set Cole up for jumpers and he drained both. Turns out all the talk about Cole's remarkable play during Miami's abbreviated training camp might not have been an exaggeration.

"He's earned their respect. Even though it's been a short period of time, about three weeks, because he's pure, he's all about the team. He's mature ... and he gets them the ball. You're always a popular guy," Spoelstra said, "when you find people when they're open."

Whether Cole turns out to be a dependable alternative at the end of games remains to be seen. He's likely to get the chances, though, because the Heat are certain to see plenty zones before the season has run its course. And either way, considering how little preparation the lockout afforded them, they're certainly going to get better at countering it. Based on the admittedly slim evidence of two games, they've already figured out almost everything else.

"We have confidence in whoever's on the floor at that time," said James, though he said much the same thing with less conviction last season.

If that turns out to be true this time around, look out.

New synthetic molecules treat autoimmune disease in mice

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

A team of Weizmann Institute scientists has turned the tables on an autoimmune disease. In such diseases, including Crohn's and rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's tissues. But the scientists managed to trick the immune systems of mice into targeting one of the body's players in autoimmune processes, an enzyme known as MMP9. The results of their research appear today in Nature Medicine.

Prof. Irit Sagi of the Biological Regulation Department and her research group have spent years looking for ways to home in on and block members of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzyme family. These proteins cut through such support materials in our bodies as collagen, which makes them crucial for cellular mobilization, proliferation and wound healing, among other things. But when some members of the family, especially MMP9, get out of control, they can aid and abet autoimmune disease and cancer metastasis. Blocking these proteins might lead to effective treatments for a number of diseases.

Originally, Sagi and others had designed synthetic drug molecules to directly target MMPs. But these drugs proved to be fairly crude tools that had extremely severe side effects. The body normally produces its own MMP inhibitors, known as TIMPs, as part of the tight regulation program that keeps these enzymes in line. As opposed to the synthetic drugs, these work in a highly selective manner. An arm on each TIMP is precisely constructed to reach into a cleft in the enzyme that shelters the active bit ? a metal zinc ion surrounded by three histidine peptides ? closing it off like a snug cork. 'Unfortunately,' says Sagi, 'it is quite difficult to reproduce this precision synthetically.'

Dr. Netta Sela-Passwell began working on an alternative approach as an M.Sc. student in Sagi's lab, and continued on through her Ph.D. research. She and Sagi decided that, rather than attempting to design a synthetic molecule to directly attack MMPs, they would try trick the immune system to create natural antibodies that target MMP-9 through immunization. Just as immunization with a killed virus induces the immune system to create antibodies that then attack live viruses, an MMP immunization would trick the body into creating antibodies that block the enzyme at its active site.

Together with Prof. Abraham Shanzer of the Organic Chemistry Department, they created an artificial version of the metal zinc-histidine complex at the heart of the MMP9 active site. They then injected these small, synthetic molecules into mice and afterward checked the mice's blood for signs of immune activity against the MMPs. The antibodies they found, which they dubbed 'metallobodies,' were similar but not identical to TIMPS, and a detailed analysis of their atomic structure suggested they work in a similar way ? reaching into the enzyme's cleft and blocking the active site. The metallobodies were selective for just two members of the MMP family ? MMP2 and 9 ? and they bound tightly to both the mouse versions of these enzymes and the human ones.

As they hoped, when they had induced an inflammatory condition that mimics Crohn's disease in mice, the symptoms were prevented when mice were treated with metallobodies. 'We are excited not only by the potential of this method to treat Crohn's,' says Sagi, but by the potential of using this approach to explore novel treatments for many other diseases.' Yeda, the technology transfer arm of the Weizmann Institute has applied for a patent for the synthetic immunization molecules as well as the generated metallobodies.

Washington Wizards: Three more keys to upcoming season

Before training camp began less than three weeks, the three keys involved whether John Wall is ready to have a breakout season, the ability of Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee to be more consistent, and if Flip Saunders can help this young roster reach its full potential.

Those concerns remain as the 66-game season tips off at 7 p.m., but here are three more keys to the campaign based on the developments of the past few weeks.

1. Who will emerge as the go-to guy?

I?ll do it if nobody else wants it. (Nick Wass - AP)
After the Wizards lost to Philadelphia in their preseason finale last week, Wall mentioned that players weren?t clear on their roles within the offense, and Coach Flip Saunders added that the team had 15 players who all felt they were the first option. Nick Young led the Wizards in scoring last season, Andray Blatche was the focal point of the offense in the months before Wall was drafted, and Wall is the team?s best player and is determined to make the all-star team. Wall will have the ball the most in Saunders?s point-guard-centric offense, but will he be satisfied at simply being a set-up guy? Young missed all of training camp and will have to earn back his spot in the starting lineup, and Blatche led the team in scoring during the preseason. The pecking order will likely be set over the next few weeks.

2. Which rookie will have the greatest influence on the team?

I can do more than defend. (Nick Wass - AP)
Jan Vesely is opening the season on the shelf with a hip injury sustained during training camp, creating an opening for Chris Singleton or Shelvin Mack to have to a more immediate impact among the rookies. Singleton already has an established role as an energetic defensive stopper and will get some playing time with his ability to play both forward positions and defend every spot between point guard and power forward. Mack also has a defined role at backup point guard for Wall, but the Wizards may not have many minutes available at that slot with Jordan Crawford also expected to get time with ball-handling and playmaking duties. Vesely should provide some highlight dunks and energy plays when he?s healthy again, but he could emerge as more of a luxury than necessity in his first season.

3. Will youth work as an advantage or disadvantage during shortened season?

I can run all week. (H. Rumph Jr - AP)
The Wizards will have enough young legs to contend with a grueling, jam-packed season that will feature two sets of three games in three nights in the final two months and 16 back-to-back games overall. Though the team brought back much of its roster from the previous season, the intensity of the games will require more than just energy and enthusiasm. With few days available for practice, players will have to rely on instincts and knowledge in critical situations. That could work at a disadvantage for a team that struggled in close games last season and will have little time to correct mistakes in just shootarounds. But depth and a roster that has seven players age 23 or younger could allow them to sneak in a few wins.

Facebook On Android Gets 58.3 Million Daily Active Users

Sites include Android.com , Facebook.com . Published on December 25th, 2011. Written by Anthony West.

The battle between Apple?s mobile platform and Android is intense and it is happening on all fronts, especially on the social networks. Apple seems to have switched focus away from Facebook and is now looking to build on its partnership with Twitter. Android on the other hand, has cemented its commitment to Facebook.

These establishment of a central focus of course, has resulted in a shift in popularity on the Facebook platform. According to a recent report, Facebook?s native app for Android now has a whopping 58.3 million daily active users (DAU), while Facebook for iPhone is now falling behind with 57.4 million DAUs. Things weren?t always like this though, and for a long time, Apple?s Facebook App was leading so badly, many thought Android would never catch up. This lag that Android suffered was due largely in part to the fact that Facebook released the Android App more than 12 months after it created and launched the iPhone App.

Will things change round again or will Facebook for Android rule supreme indefinitely? The answer is hard to ascertain at this point for many reasons, the chief one being that Facebook has launched another official iPhone App. This App currently stands at 5.5 million DAUs and many are speculating that it will soon mount a challenge to Android. But on the flip side of the coin, Facebook for Android is adding users 550,000 activations per day.

This sort of dynamic in the competitive process means that anything can happen?we?ll just have await the outcome.

Delayed iPhone 5 Release Date Fuels Nomenclature Controversy

Rumors abounding the iPhone 5's delayed release date may not spur the biggest controversy yet. But there have been reports suggesting a serious nomenclature controversy surrounding the iPhone 5 release date. The point of debate is whether Apple would call the next iPhone the "iPhone 5", "iPhone 4G" or "iPhone 6."

Apple's history of retaining product nomenclatures with the iMac and iPod for several generations signifies their non-linear naming convention with generation numbers for their products. The only exception to this list is the iPhone 4, which precisely fits the bill as a fourth-generation smartphone. The first iPhone was simply named "iPhone" and the second one was called "iPhone 3G" instead of "iPhone 2." Strangely, the fifth-generation iPhone was named "iPhone 4S" instead of the logically appropriate "iPhone 5." This further reiterates the fact that Apple wants to preserve the network technology based naming convention for their iPhones.

Like us on Facebook

The iPhone 5 is assured to roll out with LTE (Long-Term Evolution) network technology onboard. Thus, it would only be fitting to call the next iPhone the "iPhone LTE" rather than "iPhone 4G" or "iPhone 6."? Meanwhile, the "iPhone 5" just appears to be a convenient name in the pecking order, as most iPhone users would expect it to be called so. Besides, Apple wouldn't want to risk dropping the name "iPhone 5" from its product lineup as it could contradict public expectations.

If Apple sticks to its loyal consumer instincts, it would not dare change the proposed name for the iPhone. Though the name "iPhone 5" does not signify anything special about the phone, it still remains the key publicity and marketing factor for all the controversial reasons. Meanwhile, if the information from the highly-placed sources within Apple is true, then expect the iPhone 5 to be released on Oct. 5,2012, in honor of the company's co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs' first death anniversary.

After a spate of controversies surrounding the release of iPhone 5, the nomenclature controversy could only add more fuel to fire as the long wait for the elusive phone continues.

Pope denounces Nigeria church blast as 'absurd' (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI has denounced the bombing of a Nigerian Catholic church that killed 35 people on Christmas Day, saying only respect and reconciliation can bring peace ? not violence.

Speaking at his post-Christmas blessing Monday, Benedict said he had learned with "profound sadness" of the "absurd" attack on the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, which was claimed by the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.

It was the second year in a row that the group has staged Christmas attacks.

Benedict invited everyone to pray for the victims and Nigeria's Christian community.

He said: "In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace."

Convert from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7

Resolved question

Convert from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7

by BB4ALL - 12/25/11 5:54 AM

Hi,
I am in a quandary and need some advice. I want to upgrade my present Vista 32 bit Home Edition to the Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit. I already conformed with the windows advisor that my system is ready for the Windows 7 upgrade, but I see that there are two options that I can purchase Windows 7 Home Edition and Windows 7 Home Edition N. Can you tell me the difference between the two and will it be beneficial for me to upgrade. I have had nothing but trouble trying to install Windows Office 2010 over the trial Windows Office 2007 recently and this is still not working properly despite contacting MS Store for advice. Why don't MS offer programs that can be directly downloaded from their site and will operate correctly after installation. I didn't know that a complete uninstall of Office 2007 was necessary before installing 2010 and I don't want a repeat performance in the change over to Windows 7. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yahoo board continues talks on Asian deal: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Yahoo Inc's board of directors has agreed to keep exploring a plan to split off the Internet company's Asian assets in a complex deal valued at $17 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The company's board of directors decided to move forward with negotiations related to the deal on Friday, while also not ruling out separate investment proposals by private equity firms, the Journal reported, citing anonymous sources.

Yahoo, which fired Chief Executive Carol Bartz in September, has been undergoing a "strategic review" to revamp growth in its business. The Internet pioneer has struggled to compete with Google Inc, Facebook and other fast-growing rivals.

The Asian split-off deal would effectively transfer most of Yahoo's 40 percent slice in China's Alibaba Group back to the Hangzhou-based Internet company and all of its stake in Yahoo Japan to Softbank Corps, sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters.

Alibaba and Yahoo Japan would each create separate legal entities where they would put cash and certain, yet-to-be-determined operating assets, and then trade those with Yahoo, making the deal tax-free, the sources said.

Yahoo shareholders have applauded the proposed plan, sending shares of Yahoo up nearly 6 percent earlier this week when news surfaced that the plan was under consideration.

Yahoo shares closed Friday's regular trading session up 1.2 percent at $16.19.

Private equity firms TPG and Silver Lake have each advanced separate proposals to Yahoo's board that would involve the firms purchasing minority stakes in Yahoo, sources have told Reuters. Those plans have been fiercely opposed by some of Yahoo's largest shareholders, including activist hedge fund manager Dan Loeb of Third Point LLC.

At the end of the contemplated Asian split-off transaction Yahoo would retain a 15 percent stake in Alibaba, the sources said. The final deal size will depend on how the assets are valued, another source said.

Yahoo declined to comment.

Exclusive: China's CIC to get $50 billion boost (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's $410 billion sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp. is set to receive additional funding of up to $50 billion, two sources said, a step that could help it move quickly to buy overseas assets, especially in Europe.

The new funding comes along with an agreement between relevant Chinese government agencies to give CIC (CIC.UL) new money to manage every year, the sources who had knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Friday.

The sources asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity surrounding China's management of its foreign reserves.

The agreement would lay out a long-term framework under which CIC would be allocated money to manage from China's foreign exchange reserves and would also chart the future of its domestic investment arm, Central Huijin Investment, the sources said.

"The final plan for capital injection will be unveiled shortly and it could be $50 billion," a source close to the matter said.

CIC officials declined to comment.

The cash injection follows in the wake of plans -- reported by Reuters earlier this month -- to create a new $300 billion vehicle that would be affiliated with China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), the part of the central bank in charge of the daily management of China's $3.2 trillion in foreign exchange reserves.

The new funds for CIC, as well as the planned $300 billion venture under SAFE, were earmarked well before the onset of the euro zone debt crisis that has sparked international speculation about possible contributions from China to a bailout effort.

But the funding would give CIC firepower for buys at a time when attractive European and U.S. assets may come up for sale. CIC operates independently of the central bank and said in March that it had fully invested all its cash and would like the government to allocate it more money.

Chinese media have reported since late 2009 that CIC was seeking $100-$200 billion in new funding, but there have been no subsequent reports of progress.

CIC was created in 2007 when China's Ministry of Finance issued 1.55 trillion yuan in special yuan bonds to swap yuan for $200 billion worth of foreign currency from SAFE.

That provided the initial funds for active management in a bid to enhance returns from the world's largest pile of official foreign reserves.

REAL ASSETS WANTED

China's leaders have said recently that they will seek investments in the real economies of the United States and Europe apart from their routine investments in government debt.

Germany's 'manager magazin' reported in an excerpt of an article to be published on Friday, citing company sources, that CIC was the frontrunner to take a 5-10 percent stake in German luxury carmaker Daimler (DAIGn.DE).

The magazine said Daimler's chief financial officer, Bodo Uebber, had hired an investment bank to arrange a potential deal. Daimler's chief executive, Dieter Zetsche, in July said he would welcome additional investors from China, but added he did not think the Chinese would try to take control.

On Thursday, South Africa's Shanduka Group said it had sold a 25 percent stake to CIC, the latest investment by China in Africa's resources sector.

Shanduka has a diversified asset base that includes coal operations and said in a statement CIC had paid 2 billion rand ($240 million) for the stake.

CIC acquired its shares primarily from exiting shareholders Old Mutual Private Equity (OML.L) (OMLJ.J) and South African investment bank and asset manager Investec (INLJ.J).

Separately on Thursday, state-owned firm China Three Gorges won the competition to buy Portugal's stake in utility EDP (EDP.LS), paying 2.7 billion euros ($3.5 billion), in a privatization seen key to the indebted euro zone country's ability to sell state assets.

The deal also includes Chinese investment in the wider economy and is the brightest news for Portugal since it was forced to seek a 78 billion euro bailout from the European Union and International Monetary Fund in the spring.
